revrnd
Couldn't say, you'd have to look at older maps to know, I've only been back trail riding for 3 years and it's been that route since then...... I should've been more specific. I'm pretty sure @ 1 point TOP A avoided the road running west of that farm. I think east of the orange "stakes" the trail stayed off the road. Blake G
Dooski, I am now at home, looking over this thread. As I look more closely at your avatar, I realize we must have been speaking with each other this morning! Sorry, but I didn't realize it at the time. Nice looking sleds, by the way. I hope you guys had a great ride up the Canyon route today.
Fox
Soupkids. We were/are at JR's tonight so must have been there at the same time as you, tonight. Plus you are in the room at Westwood next door to you. I'll look for you Saturday.
Fox
Blake: I saw your sled on your truck last night when we pulled in at 1:30 am. Was out visiting this morning with our truck and trailer and when we got back around 10:30 ish I didn't see your truck. But chatted with some guys and who knows. Might even have been you. First time I had one was in England where they are in every Fish & Chip shop. They are best if they start from room temperature rather than frozen. Techdenis007
Got up early, hit the road at 7. Left the clubhouse in Moonbeam at about 8:35, pretty nippley ride, trails like concrete.... scratchers right off the bat. Frisky ride for the first 50km to SRF, then the sun started warming me up a bit. Topped up the sled, met Soupkids just pulling in as I was pulling out .... talked for a few minutes, then off I went. Bloody big bridge from ground zero ..... Good flow from those falls .... New cover photo ... SRF Downtown ... Idgit on the trail with a SxS ... Hit the "A" heading East, quite a few groups of sleds already out running. Stopped at a sign board on the way through.... some guy named WhiteDragon leaving graffiti decals on the board ... and some heart shaped thingy on there too .... Went a little ways, man the trail is gettin' bushy on the North side of the 11 .... lots of stumpage and debris visible on the side getting afternoon sun. Not long after I came up to this building, with an Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters sign on it, next to a small lake .... anyone know what that's about ? Went on from there, stopped off at the warm-up shack at the A / L105 junction, also the border of Arctic Riders / Polar bears clubs .... Nice shack .... Up the L105, pretty bumpy ride after the 1st turn .... fun riding thru a Provincial Park though .... Couple of guys up there already, turns out one is the uncle of a friend of mine in Kirkland Lake ... while chatting with them a wolf started howling ... so I let off a wolf call, and the whole pack started to respond ... the howling went on for about 3 minutes .... pretty neat ! They had seen a moose just below the hill before the last turn ... explains the wolf presence ..... Missing about 15 feet of ladder .... They headed off down the hill, heading towards Kap. I texted Doris26 and my son for a bit, 10-15 minutes later I headed down, and caught them before getting to the A .. one on a Rev 500SS and the other on a Renegade 800 with R-motion ... and I caught them with a 15 minute lead ? ...... lol ! I carried on East, got to the turn for Cochrane, and seeing I had a bunch of fuel left, I turned Left and went up towards the Canyon, only to cross the Abitibi River and check out the ferry ... we once crossed that ferry in the pickup, pretty neat. They've broken the trail for the ferry, but the ice bridge is still in place... not for much longer though .... Headed back across the river, promptly got right stuck on the way up the hill, turning up onto the ditchbang trail along the road ... into a deep rut where someone else had gotten stuck ... put gravity and common sense to work, got it out and drove it up the gravel .... sorry no pics ... did stop at the Polar Bear Den along the way back though ... fed the stove... turns out I missed Melanie Mitchell by a couple of hours, prolly passed by her somewhere .... Got into the trail again and headed up to Cochrane, thinking I was getting low on fuel, I got into fuel conservation mode and slacked off (a bit). Got to the Crevier next to the Tim's, the young guy working was very adamant that my sled was the nicest looking, best shape Old sled he'd seen, very nice of him. I put in a whole $29 (29.8L) of fuel for 170 km ... total of 39 liters for 222 km to that point. Pretty impressed for a '99. Grabbed a coffee & donut next door, more updates with Doris, then headed home with a few more pics on the way... in & around SRF.... Sign board / map across from Smoothies .... Bush chicken on the trail thru town ... Riders beyond this point were losing their sense of location on the trail. 3 guys passed me while I was stopped for the grouse photo, took off riding .... I got on the sled, stopped to take a pic of the bridge before crossing, then got riding. Caught them about 5 minutes later, they were doing about 70-80, kind of stuck-up looking guys when they went by me ... So they were all over the trail slowing me down. So they took this shortcut across this beaver pond to avoid some snirt, I greased by 2 of them taking the long way around on the trail, before they crossed, then passed the 3rd (lead) at the nearby stop... he kind of didn't know what to think, I guess he wasn't expecting such a beater to pass them ... I hammered it and never saw 'em again. 5 minutes later I met 4 sleds, that were WAAAAYYYYY over on my side, in a right-hand corner of course ... signalled the first 2, then a corner later the other 2 coming even faster .... I made several gestures meaning "What the F___ are you doing ?" then pointed agressively "Get the FARK on YOUR OWN SIDE" ... the only really unimpressive moments of the day. Quiet ride the rest of the way back to the clubhouse, other than hitting increasing sections of dirt and bare patches, until reaching the Moonbeam trail border.... at which point the trails were all but mint. Only the clubhouse parking lot and a coupla bridges were bare-ish. Loaded the sled after taking a couple of season-ending photos ... chatting with Nunz on the way home, careful buddy, we'll show up with the camper and a boat this summer ..... Last sledding pics for the year ...... 344 km for the day, 2102 km for the season .... never thought I'd poke it past the 2000 km mark for the year, nor the 12,000 km mark on the sled .... I'd like to thank all the clubs and volunteers for their selflessness and generosity, for bringing us the trails that we so much enjoy. And special thanks to all of you people, my extended family, and especially to Nunz and WhiteDragon, you'll always have a special place in our hearts... !!! revrnd
The azzhats you met probably didn't understand French. I started my season yelling @ the 3rd clown in a group. His friend just about took me out on a blind hill taking his 48" out of the middle of the trail. Looks like you had a great day otherwise up there. Sunny & a bit chilly down here in the banana belt, much to the chagrin of the whiners who want summer to be here already.

Fox
Dennis. Nice trip report. I connected with SoupKids at the end of the day at the Westway. Ended up we were in rooms side by side. I'm 99% sure I saw your sled turn east towards cochrane from the fire tower as we were in a warmup shack. Did the Abitibi Canyon loop. The West side was in great shape. The East side was good except in the corners. They were beat hard and rough. Nothing to bad, it was a good reminder to slow down for the corners anyway :~). We were the last group to leave the hotel and returned near 7:30. 300km on the day

COLD BEER
Thanks for the great picture report Denis. Nice sled BTW. I always liked the older, lower sleds for their ability to corner well when trail riding.

I always liked the older, lower sleds for their ability to corner well when trail riding. Thanks, me too. More pleasant to work on too. It's only a rough ride when trails are mogul stutter bumps, otherwise it rides great and corners like it's on rails. Not much choice with 6" of 60° carbide up front ....
