The failed run from SSM to Chapleau this last season.  The luck ran out at a Washout on the old D Trail south of Halfway about 40 miles.  We usually take the Toll Creek Road straight north to Chapleau, but the deep heavy snow of that day and the worries about fuel turned us back at the washout.  We started thinking about more washouts and that the point of no return was coming.  Not having info about what was coming made us route back to Black Creek for IMG_2181_zps140f14df.jpgIMG_2189_zps5a1dda56.jpggas. IMG_2180_zps52ee31a6.jpg

Hi ski,

The paddles are not quite the size of yours nor the track quite as long.  My buddy in the pictures was not feeling good about going farther because he saw his gas going down so fast.  We still rode all the way back to Black Creek (100 miles already broken trail) without adding any extra gas.  We also had 14 gallons extra between the three of us we never touched.

Paige wanted to go back to Searchmont where our trailer was parked at Carl's and re-fuel to hit it again, but my bud was not in the mood to explore anymore.  That is the kind of run we need you along to push up the hills and break through the big drifts.  No trees down, just washouts.  I might even tow a gas sled next year.

I love your pictures too.  The last couple years have been great snow years up north.

10/1 odds that was not worshed out at all.

Any open crick is like that. The snow builds up on both sides, yet the snow that falls on the open crick gets worshed away.

I have seen them over a meter deep like that.

Blow through like it's not even there - b/c it aint.

Seen one like that on Shortcut Road a few yrs ago.

(Connects Domtar to Domtar - east of Whitman Dam)

Would have turned me around too if I had an ounce of gas to spare.

I looked at it, walked away, paced around ... "what to doo" "What to doo" .... Looked at it three more times ....

It was prolly 4' down to the water... But hardly deep at all - thus why it was still open eh? It was running ...

I figgered my choices were to blow through it and maybe make the truck, or turn back to Domtar and go around, and likely have to carry the sleds the last 10 klicks. I figger if I'm gunna carry my sled anywhere, it will be through Pukaskwa National Park.

Finally grew some balls and drove through it like it wasn't even there.

There was another small brook that was open back a two-track many yrs ago. I was scootin' along pretty good and with the tight trees, never seen it until I was right on top of it. Never let up at all.  :wavey:

Had an actual worshout (actual dirt sidewalls under the snow) on our way breaking trail to Hearst many yrs ago. We were past the point of no return, so I just told my chum "See you on the other side!". We both made it, but I blew a lot of snow off the other side! What'a rush!  :drool-1:

I'd like to think that you've got plenty of Cat to git accrost that little brook.

Now - I will say ... Just b/c Ox went accrost or through it and made it look like it wasn't even there, .... doesn't mean that if you are riding a Cat that you should follow blindly.

Here is the result of this:

Was hero snow several yrs ago. Chum of a chum. I was just tooling through a swamp only a few clicks from the truck, and found the crick that went through it, and just blurped over the top - no worries. I had no idea that he was following me or I would have waved him off. When he seen it, he tried to stop, but it was too little too late. Other than cracked and busted fibreglass, the rest of the sled seemed fine and he rode it all weekend just fine after that.

And BTW KittyBoy, his name is Erick, so .....  :icon_munching:

you just have to remember, when crossing a washout, MAKE YOUR OWN TRACK, do not follow the riders track in front of you. the more that go over a washed out spot... the bigger the hole gets, and the harder to cross it, the hole becomes. :D

Hi Ox,

It was a washout, but trucks and quads had broken down the one side of it where only about a foot of sholder was left.  to the right was a swamp with multiple water runs leading to an open lake about 20 feet from the road.  The left side had an open pond up to the washout.  The best was the left side of the road because in the center there was a square sholder of road about 2 feet high off the water.  The pic looks like nothing, but the wall of snow on top the washed out road made it a bad idea anywhere except the left side.  I went down and jumped rock to rock accross the 16" of water and kicked snow away to prove the wall was mostly snow on the left side.  My buddy wanted nothing to do with it, so we went back.  The snow was heavy and very wet that day and it had all the machines gain lots of pounds.

I want to go back up and make a weekend of riding up to Chapleau from Searchmont.  I figure I would trailer to the Driftwood and park so we had gas and also pull a slide with gas.

I found a washout this winter as well. Have GoPro video of it. Hit it blind, at about 40km, broke the front bumper off the sled, and the mirror/windshield mount with my foot as I went over the bars..

I'll see if I can dig the video up and post it.

couple from this past season. ski

We were on vacation last week... hot and very humid. One day they reported 91% humidity. It made me think of the great winter we just had. Some of the same people that were grumbling about the cold were now grumbling about the heat. I pointed out if you're down to buck naked and still hot what do you do? If you're cold you can always put on more clothes and go out to play in the snow.

Very happy to hear about Chapleau remaining open this coming season.  The pictures are from Flame Lake south of Chapleau along the F trail where Paige & I spent a night last season.  Great off the grid place with great food too!  Not a gas issue to get from Black Creek to Chapleau or back to Black Creek for most sleds.  (The TSSA inspection fees caused the gas pump shut down at Flame Lake, not the regulations.)

Nice pics !   Here's one I took in the backyard, it seems the birds are making condos in my covered firewood stack ...

There were a couple of completed nests, with a bunch of supplies still in there to make more.  Maybe the neighbors started fighting ...

Yesterday the kids saw a chipmunk in the yard, hanging around the garage.  I'm thinking he might have hitched a ride home with us from Nagagamisis Prov. Park last weekend.  The kids were hand feeding it and he comes back regularly for more.  We'll feed him up right proper and see that he makes a nice home here.  I'll snag a photo as soon as I get him out !

This was a trip from Goulais River (Soo) to Drumond Island, Michigan.  Then back to Black Creek, and up to Flame Lake.  Then directly back to Goulais River (Blueberry motel and campgrounds) from Flame Lake.  Last gas was from Black Creek, but we did use 5 gallons we had with the two of us. The trail was blocked and so Paige had some cutting to do.  This last pic was at Blueberry, but the next week at the start of our long loop with zrtcat & crew.IMG_2212_zps63b27f8f.jpgIMG_2213_zpsd0288c25.jpgIMG_2217_zps85e78120.jpgIMG_2218_zpsbe95cccf.jpgIMG_2222_zps1ae6b532.jpgIMG_2226_zps4ae286dd.jpgIMG_2229_zps4e4f6531.jpgIMG_2231_zps9f316b2b.jpgIMG_2232_zps5d9df446.jpgIMG_2248_zps398d14fd.jpg

i keep one in my pocket at all times while sledding.

No problem, my daughter is getting good at cutting trees.  She might want one for Christmas?

Is that XF Cat windshield a medium or a tall? I've been thinking about a newer cat machine, and wondering how cold it might be compared to my TZ1 with a higher windshield.

That is the tallest windsheild and Wildbill is right.  Get the big one.  It is very warm and actually stops the wind from hitting my hands.  The only issue is when a tree is down and the tall windsheild will not go under without cutting or digging snow out.

Or that tunnel under Hwy 11,  near Port Sydney. Need to gently pull a tall windshield down in that tunnel to avoid scraping.

Seems that the new sleds ride higher to begin with --- high windshield would be an issue. Of course, Blake knows every backroad in the area, so not an issue.
