Le chapitre un/ Jour un/le Premier Episode

The Dirty Dozen began assembling on Friday the 27th February at a delightful place on the south shores of the St. Lawrence by the name of Mon Joli Motel.  The rooms were good, clean and spacious enough for 12 people to gather for cocktails, the restaurant served delicious meals (including frites “made with LOVE”) and the hosts were most accommodating.

Many in the group suspected I selected the Mon Joli because it offered ease of attending early morning Service.

Speaking of Service….. perhaps it was not at the church – the flesh is weak………..

Lee Marvin (disguised as a mild mannered Huntsville resident) herded his flock – there’s that Sheep motif again – into the dining room, including our demolitions expert SledJunk, for Saturday’s kick-off breakfast; many with “pumpkin heads” from the previous evening’s Drivers Meeting.
Our trip that day would take us out a very convenient stub trail directly from the Hotel parking lot to the Trans-Quebec Trail 5.   The fields behind the hotel are exposed to strong winds off the river and much of them are wind-swept to the extent of exposed ground.  Having left lots of snow in central Ontario one had to wonder why we were sledding in Saint-Flavie/Mont Joli.  Nonetheless, a short trip through the fields and under highway 132 brought us to TQ5 and another world; one filled with snow.

The early stages of our week were, predominately, on TQ5 in a clock-wise direction; this day from Sainte-Flavie past Matane, lunch at Haltes-des-Montagnes Club House, Cap-Chat and settling for the night at Sainte-Anne des Monts.

The trails were magnificent.  As it was our first day back on Quebec trails there was much time spent enjoying the ride and less than usual time spent taking pictures.   I hope some other members of the DD are able to post a few as well.

CHAOS.  irREVerent loses control early while NPG prays to the Map Gods…….

See those people waiting on the trail at the other side of the covered bridge??  They are the same ones that get P*ssed Off every time STG stops to take pictures.     J

It was a modest 210km day and we probably would have arrived in Sainte-Anne des Monts around noon if SledJunk’s lasagna order had not been given to every other rider arriving after he did at the club house.  As it was, we pulled into the parking lot of Motel “À La Brunante” by mid-afternoon – parking at your door with plenty of time to unpack, clean up, exercise our right to an “Attitude Adjustment Hour” and head to the restaurant.

And a fine restaurant it was.  The Forfait Motoneige offered a choice of Steak or Seafood Crêpes.  A fully satisfied group retired for the night.

Well, except for our friends from New York whose room became the 2:00AM entrance to the hotel for (slightly) inebriated strangers who had locked themselves out of the motel.

Join us again for our next episode as we move into and through the bigger mountains !

Just trying to help bi-cultural relations. Hope those in the Prologue were helpful to you as well. :-)

I didn't get the joke in the prologue as I was reading them in French but for some reason (a few beverages last night) I read them in English and it all made sense.  Good work!

Nice job on Day # 1, STG....and some great pics.

As per your suggestion that the rest of us also contribute some pics, here are some Day # 1 shots from Mrs. irREVerent and me.

1.  Our breakfast view at Motel Mon-Joli, overlooking Sainte-Flavie village and the St. Lawrence River beyond:

2.   A sample of the fresh breakfast crepes on offer at Motel Mon Joli:

3.  The assembled multitudes getting ready to load up and depart from Motel Mon Joli:

4.  The growing crowd at our clubhouse lunch stop in Saint-Jean-de-Cherbourg (it was a Saturday)...no wonder Sledjunk looked so "enthused" while awaiting his lasagna...

5.  The new snowmobile suspension bridge on trail TQ 5, just outside Matane...one of many suspension bridges encountered on Quebec trails:

6.  Yet another sweet section of TQ 5 on a Saturday afternoon...

7.  Another suspension bridge farther east on TQ 5, not far from the relais at Saint-Paulin...this bridge was single-file only, one sled at a time:

More pics to come, when STG posts his reports for the subsequent days.

While these pictures are actually from our return to Mont Joli a few days later, you can see how thin the snow cover is on the fields.
