  1. I’m currently riding the Quebec side from Ville Marrie up to Lasarre. The trails around Lasarre have been great. Ville Marrie to Royun is poor (some of it should be closed). It was still worth coming up to scratch the itch.

  2. Yes, Scott. We just got off the phone. We decided to shyte can the original 4- day ride, and decide tomorrow whether to can the whole idea. If we go, we will be following Mark's advice and stage out of S-R Falls or Kap. We would then sled 2-3 days and drive home. We have done that twice before and had very good luck getting a decent ride in when Cochrane was pooched. It would be nice to hear from some weekend riders what their experience was in the Kap to Hearst area. I refuse to let this defeat me as a sledder, but I have to admit, this winter (or lack thereof) is starting to wear thin on this grumpy old man.

  3. Thanks guys for the info. We will decide today whether to pull the plug altogether, change staging sight or maybe even hold the course. There are only two of us and we are both stubborn. One good thing about the weather is we should be able to find rooms.

  4. Started measuring a second boat up to get it ready for for salmon fishing. A buddy sent pics yesterday of him frying up his catch while still on the water. Owen Sound launch had a few rigs in the parking lot. I'm moving on.

  10. I've got a room booked for Cochrane this week Jan 30- Feb 3 but with conditions deteriorating and more warm weather forecast for the week again, I think I'm going to cancel the room and try again in a week or two. Sucks cause I haven't been out yet this year but no point travelling all that way to fight poor conditions and more warm weather.

  11. I think from what I’m seeing I would drive to Smooth rock to start . There may not be more snow but at least the weekend traffic should have been lighter . Tough call but I would take the chance if that’s your only week to go for a while . Good luck let us know what you decide .

  14. I would definitely wait another week or two also, except that I have important family medical appointments to keep in both weeks. And, winter is short as we are seeing. Thanks for the feedback PLC and Blackstar. That handle and photo still don't look right.

  15. Jackpine SC in Iroquois Falls has had at least one and possibly both their groomer broken down all of last week I believe. Timmins and Cochrane have groomed some of Jackpines trails at least once. Haven't seen any updates on F/B for a couple of days on Timmins and Cochrane F/B. No posts on the Jackpine F/B site since Jan.12th.

  20. On the bold, you're absolutely right, and I'm not sure that most people understand that. There is nothing stopping anyone from naming a potential target defendant in a SOC - and then, as you pointed out, resources are required to defend against it. Money well spent - but spent! I have seen few defendants released from actions until after the Examination for Discovery process has been undertaken, which takes quite a bit of work, time and expense even to get up to and through that point. You can always try, but threatening costs if not does not usually scare too many Plaintiff firms. As I mentioned, with 1% liability on the books - they're going to look anywhere and everywhere for potential defendants. On costs, my experience differs a little - most times if we are successful and seeking, they are awarded - sometimes in full - sometimes partial - sometimes up to the max ( small claims ). Collecting on them is another story

  21. Maybe not! Those wanting out are going to have to give their sleds away. There are already hundreds of good sleds at great prices for sale in southern Ontario. Adding more on the supply side can only further hurt resale prices. Might be better to just keep the sled(s) and adjust your sledding expectations. A rider who has been sledding 4-6000 km per year, might only only get 2-2500 km this year. Similar ratio applies to the more casual low km rider. I had an enjoyable warm up of 70 km out of Fergus last Friday afternoon. Yesterday, out of Elmira, I got another 160 km in decent trail conditions down your way with Mr and Mrs Woodsy. Must embrace small victories like that and stop griping. I guess that's a lot easier to do when I'm not over invested in equipment or emotional anticipation. I will get north a couple of times and that might be all she wrote, but sign me up for the 2025 trail pass as soon as its available. We have always heard that diversification is the key to a financial portfolio. Same for powersports - have something ready to play with come April and use it. Key to happiness!

  22. Geraldton to Nipigon is doable. Just follow the Natural Gas pipeline. Bring Gas! As you near the Nipigon River, you'll cross a road that may or may not be plowed, that runs toward Cameron Falls dam. That's about the only way to cross the river. When you cross the river, you'll ditch bang for a while until you get to hydro lines, that you follow most of the way to Nipigon. Most of this route will have snowmobile traffic. From there, maybe best to try and find somebody to trailer you. Sorry. My trailer contact has moved on. Good luck.
