SUDBURY area accommodation

Giddy UP

Recommended Posts

Hey All!!!

WOW...haven't been here for awhile - I see lots of new sledheads!!!

Just planning some "possible" areas to ride with our group this year.  Saddlebagging has been fun for some years now - but our little band of merry Sledheads have apparently reached their "best before" date and now want to settle in to one or two places for the week for some day tripping and the comfort of a cabin (or two) for a week or so.

We have never really explored the Sudbury area much and we are looking for some accommodation recommendations in that general area - doesn't have to be right in town...but this is our list of criteria

1.  Trail access a must

2.  Prefer cabin/cottage resort type accommodation with full kitchen

3  Dining on site or close by

4.  Looking for potentially up to 4 couples - and would prefer either 4 units or 2/2bdrm cabins to share  (similar to Wawa Motor Inn cabins would be awesome!)  No...we are not going back to Wawa Motor Inn this trip...so .....not there..LOL

** could be a motel type accommodation with efficiency units - that's OK too

We would like to explore also the Elliot Lake area - so any comments and references appreciated!

Thanks!  LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW! :icon_snow:  :icon_snow:  :icon_snow:  :icon_snow:  :icon_snow:  :icon_snow:  :wavey:  :wavey:

Giddy, I recommend either Chateau Guay or Moonlight Inn & Suites.  They are across the road from each other, Chateau Guay has a restaurant (good home cooked food) and the restaurant is walking distance from Moonlight.  The trail comes to their door and they are club supporters.

The Moonlight is a larger location with some efficiency units, IIRC.

There are some very nice loops available around Sudbury and they are well marked as OFSC tour loops.

Howdy Giddy and Mr Giddy.

Me, I still like the Owls Nest. It's central and offers travel in every which way. We've sledded to Wolf Mtn to the north, Killarney to the west, south past the bridges and east along the south shore of Nipissing. Rich as fuel on site. Not sure if the lodge will be open for dining this winter but the cabins are certainly large enough and the kitchens are fully equipped. I didn't like the heavy traffic that "Sudbury" proper had.

Once the ice trail gets set you could always cross at Killarney to Birch and then carry on to Elliot Lake.

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Hey Sledjunk and Faceman!

Happy New Year to you both!  I wasn't sure if Owl's Nest was too far south........but will check it out for sure Randy as I have heard nothing but great things about that place.  Also like your recommendations SJ and will check them out as well :D

Doooing my snowdance and hope to see you guys on the trails soon!  Did a bit of running up in Kearney this weekend - roads were good before they plowed them yesterday - and was out helping pack the D trail west out of Kearney to Sprucedale.  Hope the long range forecast is correct - looks like snow coming all next week and these colder temps will set things up nicely!

GIDDY UP!!!   :woot:  :woot:

Here is a list - you might find the Fairbanks Lake Resort to fit your cabin like needs. Also, the Moonlight does have some efficiency suites - got a review somewhere in the Accomodation section if you search - here it is post #4:

That being said Owl's Nest deserves the business if they are open as Rich does a lot of work on the trails around there.

A couple of notes, a few years ago we had planned on the Chateauguay as a staging point. Weather wasn't the greatest in the Sudbury area w/ a resulting lack of snow. A couple of weeks before our arrival the manager called us telling what the situation was & the option to cancel.

Any update on Pine Falls since their fire @ the main lodge?

Pine Falls stiffed us on accommodation (as was mentioned previously). Imagine pulling up at night, sub-zero, to an outpost type of accommodation and being told "sorry, a film crew made us a better offer - took all the cabins". No call, no email. Onward we went that night.

Sledjunk's suggestions  - Chateau Guay or Moonlight Inn & Suites - are worth considering. "Fuel" is a little out of the way (IMO) by sled, so fill up before arrival and every night as you come back. It's a twisty goat path to get fuel....SO CLOSE by road, but twisty trail otherwise.

I love Sudbury riding. So many birch trees.

Thanks Canuck!  I really want to ride this area this year - we have only driven past on several occasions enroute to other destinations.  It appears there is nothing around anymore in the Elliot Lake area for accommodation - so it would appear that the two suggested would be the best choice.  We will be staying a few days and will have gas on the trailer - so we will be able to fill up then - but thanks for the "heads up" on the gas station...this is good to know!  Cheers!    :wavey:  :wavey:

There is the Hampton Inn in Elliot Lake - just so you can update your own personal database - which is accessable  by trail:

If ïnterested in "retiring in the area" here's a good deal!

whatever you do, don't go to the Falcon in Garson.  Got stranded there in a major storm about 7 years ago.  It was our only option, we were lost and out of fuel on the sleds.  Trails blew in so much we lost the actual trail.  Walked into the Falcon late, exhausted and cold.  My buddy wanted to leave when we saw the room.  It was pretty much stay there or sleep on the sled so I wouldn't let him leave.  But boy it was special.

Should have burned down then in my mind, not sure if it could still possibly be in operation, but if it is stay clear.

Looks like it closed - grew up about a mile from there:

Falcon Hotel Closing

The “Bird” has been a beehive of activity over its five decades of operation on the always busy Falconbridge Road in Garson.

In its heyday, the Falcon Hotel was a place where miners from both Garson and Kirkwood mines would down a cold one after a long, gruelling shift, ball and hockey players gathered after a game and relived the highlights, and many a Garson teen had his or her first beer.

It was also a place where Canadian Tire money was accepted as cash; the business then used the unique currency to buy needed products at the major Canadian retailer.

Thanks for the update guys. I had wondered about the place & had it marked Not Recommended on the database. Some of these places are difficult to get info on. No website & when you do a Google search, all you get are several hits on bogus motel listing websites that have less info than my database.

The Busted Beaver in River Valley

no accommodation but good food.

Right beside D trail halfway between North Bay and Sudbury.

Haven't been there for a couple of years but hopefully it is still in operation.

We stopped in there last year on one of our trips, food was really good as I recall.
