Pics Added - Gowganda Lake Lodge (late March - Great Trails)

Canuck

Recommended Posts

We rode up to Skead, Ontario on Friday (thanks for the suggestion, Sled Ed). Parked at Skead community centre, crossed the lake, gas at Rocky's and stayed at Gowganda Lake Lodge.

Saturday was a stellar day - mint trails to Kirkland Lake.

Sunday - returned to trailer in Skead.

Just wanted to get the word out that the trails up north are mint.

Only had the 3 days so couldn't go further north. There was no need to. What a great time at Gowganda Lake Lodge.

The river route saved about an hour (vs Trail 78)

DAY TWO - GOWGANDA to KIRKLAND LAKE and back to GOWGANDA

What a view as you leave Gowganda towards Elk Lake

Elk Lake has an ice trail - turn right towards New Liskeard (which we've always done) or turn left to Kirkland Lake (new for us). Love the riverside barn.

Mint trails the last week of March, 2015

The moon came out mid-day. The blue sky made it special.

A big "THANK YOU" to Ron and Giselle for being such wonderful hosts. A great place to stay, any time in the snowmobile season. They'll be snowmobiling up there for a while.

Thanks, Slomo. Next year's resolution will be to travel with an actual 'camera' (like I used to). The Blackberry is okay, but it can't handle shade as well as the dedicated camera.

I've also decided to store images with Google Picasa. Not sure what others are doing (Flickr, hard drive, etc) but Picasa works for me.

Good report, Canuck. It's useful for future reference, thanks to your map and other details. Trails look just great.

Good point. Ron mentioned that if you bring up a quad, he can direct you to remote lakes where he stores fishing boats. Great fishing, I'd imagine.

yes indeed , strapped a 9.9 to the rack of the bike and drove into some very remote lakes where he keeps boats chained to trees , put motor on and do some great fishing ,been going up for years now , Ron and Giselle will set you up with everything you need , no bike ,no worries ,they will take you in on his 6 man bike ,drop you off in the morn and come back and get you at days end

If you're shopping, I have been using the Canon ELPH 115 IS - decent pictures from a camera that will fit in your shirt pocket - easy fit in a sled jacket. Batteries last quite a long time in very cold weather. I picked up a couple of aftermarket batteries at Future Shop for 1/4 of the price of the Canon and have more that enough for a good rotation.

Interesting to hear about the ATVing in that area. Does anyone know if there are any roads or trails suitable for motorbike use in that area?

Beautiful pics!  We stayed at Ron & Giselle's a few years ago on the Gold Rush Tour, beautiful place.  Will be looking into bringing the ATV up there soon!

  • 9 months later...

I just saw Akron's post re: starting a trip in the Sudbury area at the end of January (can't do it - but joining him at the end of Feb), and it made me think of Skead (more importantly, Wanapitei Lake, Rocky's, northern river).

Rocky's posted this oninous update on FB - January 11/16 - The lake is still wide open so we'll keep the hours limited for now.

Any updates on the northern Sudbury area greatly appreciated. Makes sense to start a separate thread, in that region,  if  when trails firm up.
