Northern Ride - Quick Update

Here is a quick report based on the last 3 days of riding.

Monday - March 1 - New Liskeard to Cochrane

Mostly good to excellent trails, some freshly groomed (followed the groomer near Val Gagne) some not so much. (Iroquois falls) Overall very good. Another great stay at Lillabelle.

Tuesday - March 2 - Cochrane to Hearst

Typically Northern Corridor conditions. Flat and fast, but much less snow than normal. We actually saw some bare spots on A trail near Hearst. (in corners) - Nice stay at the Companion.

Wednesday - March 3 - Hearst to Timmins

Flat and fast. Many recently groomed sections. C trail from Smooth Rock Falls was fantastic.

NOTE: L123 has closed sections from Opasatika to Kap. Stayed at the Super 8. Decent hotel & rooms but some annoyances such as being on the 2nd floor (but it was sold out that night) and the broken toaster and lack of breakfast items at the continental breakfast.

Thursday - March 4 - Timmins to Gowganda

Off to a late starts after a visit to Mikey's. Headed out of town on L-24 to L22 to A11C to L-143. Trails were rougher until we hit L-143. Once on L143, things improved and it was clear sailing all the way to C106A. L143 did have about 2-3 miles of plowed section just south of the road crossing at McArthur Lake Lodge sign. C106A was recently groomed and great until the lake crossing. C106A continued on as excellent all the way to L136. We headed south and enjoyed L136 all the way to Gowganda, minus the 2-3 km portage in the middle. Overall, a great day on the trails. We stayed at Gowganda Lake Camp. Shortly after our arrival, Giselle arrived with out excellent dinner. Later on we hosted happy hour for ourselves and the other guests.

Friday - March 5 - Gowganda to New Liskeard

Since our ride was short, we visited with Ron & Giselle until about noon, then hit the trails. The new A107C re-route over to Beuty Lake Road is excellent. You still have to ride the side of Beuty Lake road for 8km, but the new trail is cut for next year. The rest of the way to Elk Lake was also in great shape. Lunch at teh ECO center. The rail line out of Elk Lake was in need of grooming (but Ron gave us the heads up). Trails were rougher due to lower snow and need of grooming the closer we got to New Liskeard.

Nights have been cold, days have been great. Still below zero each day.

Overall, we lucked out with the weather. Cold crisp mornings, nice days and excellent trails! Unfortunately that changed as the weekend hit.

Sounds like a good ride so far. Sorry we missed you in New Liskeard. Have a safe trip.

It's only the portion west of L145 (south of Harty) that's closed. We were planning on dropping south from Opaz' the day we rode from Hearst back to Kap. Met a couple @ the Opaz' clubhouse & they gave us a heads up. We dropped down @ Harty & rode the "south" trail out to Moonbeam. Came back to Kap via TOP A & L135.

Just got back from New Liskeard, did a couple short day loops, Earlton, Engelhart, Elk Lake. Found the trail's very good, road running deteriorating rapidly. Loved the Hot-tub at the Quality Inn!!

Also just finished a trip up north (North Bay to Cochrane). Trails around Matachewan and south of Timmins were incredible, trails very good in the Smooth Rock and Cochrane areas. Trails along the highway were deteriorating fast in the sunlite on the way back, but were still pretty good.

Stayed at a place near Matachewan (Golden Eagle Camp). Great spot, with great food and accomodation. My sled broke down and the owner offered to come and get me........now that is a good host.

Get out while you can.......not much time left!

Glad to hear it went well Skipper minus the break down. I haven't been to Golden Eagle in a number of years now (2 owners ago) but back around 2000 - 2003 it was great. The new owners are very active with Elk Lake Trailblazers so it is nice to hear good things about their place too.

I will provide more updates on this thread when time permits.

Hey 14

It was great having you guys here. Very cool meeting SledJunk and Domino. Thanks again to Domino and his comp. skills. I did take part in some of the happy hour which was lots of fun to say the least. Glad to hear our trails treated you well. Next season should be even better with more of the re-routes taking full effect.

Trails are closing now , not sure where the season went but it is gone now. :-(

Hope to see you again next season

Ron , Giselle , Jack & Max
