skidooboy Posted November 15, 2014 Share Posted November 15, 2014 yes that is correct. ambassador (smaller mom and pop motel), is in the soo (north edge of town, away from downtown). lots of people stay at the water tower in the soo (right on the trail but, in town). have to cross busy roads, and depending on snow coverage, you may have to ride bare pavement sometimes. there are some hotels near the water front, near the train station. they have a new arena downtown, and the casino is right there. so if you could get a hotel there, and you get transport worked out... you could walk to the train station the last morning. ride into town, figure out where to meet the transporter, transport sleds, and you to downtown, and the station/hotel area. Is there fuel there seems to me someone was saying that there is fuel at the resort. Back up plan would be scrap the Catalina and wing it our selves! Dean, from Catalina Motel attended one of our club meetings last year and made a presentation of his services. He shuttles customers and sleds to and from the train staging area and he also shuttles customers back and forth from the main staging area. As a follow-up, I emailed Dean last week and he immediately replied back and said he is offering the identical services this year as he was last year. He also shuttles customers back and forth into the USA. I hope this helps. Hopefully you get a chance to talk with Dean as he is a really nice guy. On another note, due to increased urban sprawl of our city in the past few years and the construction of a new super school, there is no more link to the Water Tower Inn hotel. The trail is gone and replaced by a multi-million dollar school. Unofficially, riders were driving down the sidewalks last year to get to the Water Tower Inn. I don't think the City Police would find that entertaining. The Ambassador Motel is one of the last survivors that hasn't been taken over by urban sprawl. You can still sled to the door of the Ambassador motel. It is located at the northern part of the city on the trail. Its sad to say, but the City of Sault Ste. Marie is not a snowmobile-friendly city in terms of access. The people are great and we live in such a beautiful community, but the internal access within the city is no-go based on city bylaws and restrictions established by City Hall. We have dozens of hotels and motels on the main drags, but you can't legally sled to them. There are unofficial side-street trails in the city that bring you to a Trunk road hotel , restaurants and several motels, but are not marked. Let me bring this up at the next meeting and see if anyone else is planning of offering Shuttle Service from the Staging Areas to various motels. so far, your best bet is Dean at Catalina. Hope this helps. As for the Searchmont Ski resort, they used to keep emergency fuel on-hand for the ski resort, but not sure if they will sell any to the public. The Searchmont Trading Post has the above fuel tank already on-site and the barriers surrounding it, however, the store closed last year and so did the fuel supply, therefore no fuel in Searchmont at this time. We are crossing our fingers that someone will pick this up and re-establish that fuel system. Goulais River, north of Sault Ste. Marie has Blueberry Hill motel. Searchmont has the Searchmont Ski Resort. If anyone is planning on travelling up this way this winter and you are stuck for a ride anywhere within the city, call me, I would hate to see anyone frustrated trying to get around for meals or shopping items or general direction. So our trip is a go! Hearst to Sault and ride the train back. We are going to make it four days of riding with one on the train and two driving so a great way to kill a week. Large group of skiers for Mile 36 and at least 12 snow machines in the 2nd baggage car. Will report how the trip was when we arrive at Hearst tonight.
