The weather midget on CHEX is forecasting 10 - 20 cms for Bancroft. Slightly more in Peterboro. Hopefully we get the high end of his "guess".

Kitchener - Cambridge - Region of Waterloo

10:00 PM EST Monday 31 January 2011

Winter storm watch for

Kitchener - Cambridge - Region of Waterloo continued

..Major winter snowstorm Tuesday night and Wednesday..

This is an alert to the potential development of dangerous winter weather conditions in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A major winter storm is developing over Texas and is setting its sights on the lower Great Lakes. This storm will track northeast towards Southern Ontario Tuesday..With the storm centre expected to move just south of lakes Erie and Ontario Wednesday.

Major snowstorms originating in Texas typically have a fairly large band of heavy snow in areas on the cold..Or north side..Of their track..With maximum total snowfall amounts often reaching 30 cm.

Light snow will begin in advance of this system tonight and Tuesday. However the heavier snow is forecast to begin Tuesday night and continue Wednesday morning. Potential widespread snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are likely before the snow tapers off Wednesday afternoon in the wake of the storm centre.

In addition strong and gusty east winds will develop with the snow. This will cause local and frequent whiteout conditions in blowing snow..Resulting in near blizzard conditions at times.

The east winds are also generate lake effect snow bands off of Lake Ontario into parts of the Golden Horseshoe area particularly near Hamilton in advance of the main snow area. There is a potential for one of these to intensify into a snow squall before the main area of snow from the storm arrives. As a result snowfall amounts may be enhanced considerably especially around parts of the Golden Horseshoe near the west end of Lake Ontario.

The snow may change to ice pellets and freezing rain for a while Tuesday overnight for regions near Lake Erie.

This will be the first Major winter storm of the season for the Toronto area..And the strongest storm of the season for many regions outside the traditional snow belts. The heavy snowfall and blowing snow will cause whiteout conditions making for extremely hazardous driving conditions.

The public should be prepared to change plans accordingly to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm as travelling conditions may be dangerous at times.

Environment Canada continues to monitor this dangerous winter storm and will issue further watches and warnings as necessary. It is quite possible the watch may be expanded north and east to include the national Capital region by Tuesday morning as well.

Here's an itinial accumulation forecast from Accuweather...

590x324_01310134_jan30bb.png

A major storm will track toward the upper Ohio Valley Tuesday through Wednesday. This is likely to be one of the bigger snowstorms in the Chicago area in quite some time if the consensus track holds true.

The storm will lose a little punch by the time it gets into eastern Canada, but it still should be a significant snow event for many, and probably the biggest snowstorm of the season for some.

My forecast is based on the idea that the storm will be a little stronger and slightly farther north than the latest model forecast when it impacts Ontario, thus the idea that the heaviest snowfall in Ontario will be north of a line from Windsor, London and Toronto. Even though these cities should be mostly, if not all, snow during the duration of the storm, the steadiest, heaviest band of snow should eventually set up shop in the favored region farther north of the actual storm track.

Winter storm warning for

Kitchener - Cambridge - Region of Waterloo upgraded from Winter storm watch

Major winter storm tonight into groundhog day.

Light snow in advance of this winter storm is moving across Southern Ontario this morning with some locales near Lake Erie expected to receive 2-4 cm of the white stuff before tapering off to isolated flurries by this afternoon. However heavy snow from the winter storm will arrive in Southwestern Ontario this evening and quickly spread northeast to the greater Toronto area by shortly after midnight and into Eastern Ontario by Wednesday morning. Widespread total snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are likely before the snow tapers off Wednesday afternoon in the wake of the storm centre.

In addition strong and gusty east winds will develop with the snow. This will cause local and frequent whiteout conditions in blowing snow..Resulting in near blizzard conditions at times.

Lake effect snow bands coming in off Lake Ontario in the stiff northeasterly flow may dump an additional few centimetres of the white stuff onto parts of the Golden Horseshoe around the west end of the lake today. There is some potential for one of these bands to intensify into a snow squall at times..With very low visibility possible in bursts of heavy snow and blowing snow there today.

The snow may change to ice pellets and freezing rain for a while tonight and tomorrow morning for regions near Lake Erie.

This will be the first Major winter storm of the season for the Toronto area..And the strongest storm of the season for many regions outside the traditional snow belts. The heavy snowfall and blowing snow will cause whiteout conditions making for extremely hazardous driving conditions.

This major winter storm is quite large in size and will have a major impact on travel especially tonight and on Wednesday.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A major winter storm is over Texas is now aiming itself towards the lower Great Lakes. This storm will track northeast towards Southern Ontario today..With the storm centre expected to track through Northern Ohio tonight then into New York state on Wednesday. Major winter storms originating in Texas usually have a fairly large band of heavy snow in areas on the cold..Or north side..Of their track..With maximum total snowfall amounts often reaching 30 cm. This winter storm is no exception.

The public should be prepared to change plans accordingly to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm as travelling conditions will be dangerous at times.

Environment Canada continues to monitor this dangerous winter storm and will issue further watches and warnings as necessary.

This storm seems way too far away to hit by tonight. A late storm is a weak storm. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm starting to lose hope.

Too many negative waves man :headbang:

Too many negative waves man :headbang:

Perhaps I was a little hasty. It is moving a quicker than I had originally observed and is finally entering into the Chicago region. It still has a long way to go, but consider the negative waves reversed... for now. ;)

Here's a very odd weather warning.. Duck & Cover?

That is an interesting statement; usually only reserved for severe thunderstorms with tornado potential. They are only calling for 20-25cms of snow, which is nothing out of the ordinary for the region with some good lake effect action.
