Groomer maintenance , Baxter Snow Riders

Baxter Snow Riders have been busy preparing for this coming season here's an example of what we've been upto provided by our friend " Smitty" .

Many things happen in the off-season with snowmobile clubs that often go unnoticed. One of them is shown here. Over a five day period, four of us volunteered our time to overhaul the track on the groomer.

On the inside of the track, there is a thick rubber belt that works the same as the track on your sled. These belts had to be replaced. In the pics you will notice that the steel tracks, or "grousers", me neither, are each held on by three nuts and bolts, which in turn are held in place by steel plates on the inside of the belt.

There are approx. 70 grousers on each side, which means about 420 nuts and bolts had to be removed then replaced. Our air tools could not break them free, so we had to rely on the old armstrong method. This means one person had to hold a wrench on the nut, while the other had to break the rust by turning another wrench with a steel bar for more leverage.

Those of us who did this ranged from 55 years old, me the baby, to their seventies. Muscles we hadn't used in years. After leaving several chunks of knuckle meat, and turning the air a definite "blue" tinge, we finally accomplished our goal.

So, while you sit in the city wondering what it's like up here before the snow starts to fly , you can be rest assured that somebody is always doing something to help make this pastime run as smoothly as possible.

Volunteers are always needed know matter what your contribution, it's always welcome.

Thanks for the update.

The Honey Harbour Webcam is cool. Looks like ice is forming.

Your trails were awesome last year.

Yeah the ice is forming , A club Member on Six Mile said he saw a family of Racoons run across on the weekend so I`d imagine at least an inch thick , but the wet snow has turn it to slush . I have a feeling we are gonna be dealing with some crappy Ice this year .

The Groomer operators work hard for the club last year , I`ll pass on the info .

had the pleasure of riding your trail system last year. it was awesome thanks. :D:D

Thanks for the support and riding our trails . :right_on:

Great post YC. It's always good to see and hear about the "behind the scenes stuff". Great pics and thanks for all the hard work to keep those trails in tip top shape!

Thanks Giddy Up,

There is lots of work behind the scenes , we're putting the finishing touches on a few welds on the groomer drag .

Hopefully the swamps can freeze up for us and we can start packing soon .

We've got an abundant amount of snow close to 2 ft but alot of water in places that were dry last year .

Getting the Groomer stuck and the $7000 worth of improvements over the summer is the last thing we need .

Patience needed and lots of cold !

Same every where . some trails will open as they are dry however some will travel on the other trails and blame everyone but themselves for thier misfortune.
