Parry Sound to North Bay & Back

We're thinking of a trip from the Parry Sound area (Humphrey) up to North Bay for the night, then back the next day.  Other than TOP C to Ardbeg, we haven't been on those trails.  Does anyone have suggestions for routing (along with gas and food)?

Sturgeon Falls

We met 2 men in their 60's in Sturgeon Falls last week (West side of Nipissing). They rode up from Mactier. Just over 400 kms on Thursday. They were heading back to Mactier the next day. Basically a 2 day trip.

I was surprised that they ran up to the bridges (French and Pickerel) and then across, but that's what they did.

I'd recommend that route up (stay at Comfort Suites in Sturgeon Falls). For the route back the next day, take Lake Nipissing to North Bay, then D trail south. To get to the lake, head to the Sturgeon Falls Arctic Cat dealer, and take that side-road down to Lake Nipissing. Get onto the ice, head for the big island, turn left at big island, head for North Bay. Three of us went between the next 2 islands; Domino went closer to shore, to the left of the small island. We were told that the shore route adds 5 kms but he beat us. Ice was rough, but any new snowfall will smooth out the ride. Be careful out there.

North Bay

If you want to go directly to North Bay, aim for Callendar Bay on Lake Nipissing  via:

Seguin Trail (103D) past Sprucedale - get fuel there if necessary or continue to Burk's Falls

North on D123 to Burk's Falls (fuel)

Make your way over to the TOP D trail

D trail north to SSR 700 (which avoids Kms of road and leads to Powassan for gas and a 'late' lunch at Kudo's if you haven't eaten in Burk's Falls or Kearney earlier in the day)

SSR 700 to D102 C to Callendar Bay, Lake Nipissing

Take ice trail SSR710 to Lakeshore Drive in North Bay

Clarion Resort is right off the ice. Others prefer Comfort Inn, also on Lakeshore Drive or some of the hotels at the far end of town (Travelodge beside Don Cherry's).

You can map the North Bay route on the interactive guide by "Add to Route" - Parry Sound, Burk's Falls, Callendar Bay. I'm using that 'big picture' feature a lot - it helps when you don't have a paper guide in front of you.

DON'T take C trail north to C105D. It has beautiful topography, but adds hours to this trip. You mention Arberg, so you've been to this area anyways.

DO consider Seguin to C101 north to C104D east and tie into the D trail in the Sundridge area. It's a route I haven't ridden, but one that others can comment on. Likewise, Trail 711 is off the Seguin but it's been a while since I was on that.

Have fun. Aim for Callendar Bay in the North Bay area and take the lake trail into town.

Well, our trip is planned for this coming weekend. We'll go up to North Bay through Ardbeg, Port Loring, and then follow D102C into NB.

We had planned on returning down D, then through either South River or Sundridge to Magnetewan, then down to the Seguin. However, we just heard that there is some nasty road running somewhere along that route, so maybe we need to return via the way we are going up.

Can someone elaborate on this road stretch?

We've got rooms booked at the Best Western in North Bay for Saturday night.  We want to ride south from NB back to the Parry Sound area.

Can someone elaborate on where this road stretch is located?  We're thinking it may not be wise to go that way with the melting we've had.  Hopefully someone can help us out.

Don't do it, come back through Port Loring & Ardberg.

lots of road rash between Mag & Ardberg and I would imagine at lot from South River to Powassen.

C trail from Parry Sound to Ardberg was very good on Wednesday.

Enjoy your ride.

Im heading to north bay sunday and im taking the 711 in spurcedale to 712 outside magnetawan to c104d to the c105d. Then to eagle lake on the c105d onto nn430 up eagle lake. the nn430 turns into ssr706 to nippissing village, then the c110d to ssr710 outside powassen. take the ssr710 to lake nippissing.

You could take this route in reverse order and take the seguin to Parry Sound from sprucedale. Road scratch is going to happen most places. Hope and pray for some snow, looks like muskoka north should get some.

Rode 711 from seguin to mag this morning. Rough and getting thin on snow as you get closer to the 104.

Ya that new section has been rough most of the year. Thats why im taking 712 aross the lake cecebee into port carman and in behind mag.

  • 2 weeks later...

Rode with B-Bry et al to North Bay and back. Trails were AWESOME! Ate at Jake's both days food and service were great. Jake gave us advice on finding gas and avoiding some construction on D102C. Great guy. Thanks for the help OC'ers.
