Actually costs are quite inexpensive....one bedroom apartments rent for around $490 a month and a search on http://www.realtor.ca/splash.aspx for Elliot Lake reveals 14 pages and more of condos and houses less than $100,000 in a fully serviced town of 10,000 or so. Downsides? -Small communities are in danger of financial difficulties in the future. Saw on the news the community of Latchford - on highway 11 north of North Bay (and home to the worlds smallest covered bridge)- is having trouble making ends meet and could pull a Detroit. Other northern communities are likely in the same boat. -Wife might not want to go. (one bedroom apartments rent for around $490 a month)

Elliotgroomer
Elliot Lake is a great place to live, been there for over 50 years. Sled friendly city with great trails. The city of Elliot Lake does more for our snowmobile club than probably and other town or city in the province. If RL is willing to give you free accomodations take them up on the offer and come and try our trails.

We drove through on a visit a couple of weeks ago....lots of lakes, nice woods, all season trails, looks to have a good bus service around town if you don't want to drive, much to recommend in the community. 02Sled
I heard from a person in the area once that there are two drawbacks. True summer is about 3 weeks long and that the mosquitos show up on aircraft radar.

If RL is willing to give you free accomodations take them up on the offer and come and try our trails. We stayed 4 nights last season in Elliot Lake. Always try to include EL in some of our trips, but the season before the weather did not help. The town is real freindly to sleds and you can go just about everywhere. Taxis are available for enjoying dinner and drinks without having to ride back to your motel. Nice to have the option sometimes. Trails are always great when the conditions allow! They really take the trail maintenance seriously and have some very beautiful trails with all types of riding. They vary from flat/rolling to twisty and steep hills. Love the trails and make them part of weekend loops from SSM. The new trail north out of Searchmont to Aubrey Falls/Black Creek is another great link to get over to Elliot Lake and a nice day ride from SSM. This is a picture from the motel in EL next to Tim Hortons and McD's. The trail comes up in back of the restaurants and you ride right through the parking lots into the motel lot. Nice all around riding.
