A little more info on why I am asking this......we are looking at cottages and one of interest has come up that happens to have a basement that is partially finished and the other half is the utility room. The previous owner lived here year round. Having a cottage with a basement is not on our checklist as our intentions for winter use is not to have have running water, etc....so I am wondering what people that have a basement / foundation do in the winter as it brings into the equation a concern for me or at least something that needs to be considered. My initial thought is I would want to keep it heated somewhat when not there to avoid issues with the structure. It has baseboards now that can be left on but adding a furnace would likely be a good investment for this purpose and still heat when there with the wood stove. Draining the water, etc....before we leave is not an issue to make those modifications to allow that, the water line right now to the cottage is a heated one as well. That is currently an unknown, but I’ve done some reading and that is best case scenario for this situation. Given the surrounding, I don’t think it is.

I have a couple of inquiries pertaining to cottages and winters that some here may be able to share their first hand experiences or thoughts on. Assuming cottage has been winterized otherwise. 1) Does anyone have a four season cottage with a basement foundation and do you keep heat on low in basement all the time while not there? 2) What are people’s thoughts on the above scenario regarding heating your cottage with basement foundation - will or can a lack of heat below grade cause foundation or floor issues during cold winter months Thank you

We too have looked at a cottage recently in this area and wondering how or if the trails link up with Harcourt Park that encompasses about 7,000 aces in this area, just west of Elephant lake.....looks like either E trail or 626 or possibly 601.

I would say the trailer at the canyon is not as remote as HH and the canyon is just a relatively small loop to the dam vs a major trail that connects two northern regions. But it is similar that a person stays there for a period as a remote destination that allows sledders to ride there, get some gas, very basic food and now they offer lodging too. Another location is devils mountain in QC where a person stays there for a stint to serve those that make it up there, but an even shorter distance than both of the above.

Yes, cables could do the trick too of course, have worked perfectly fine my entire driving life .......but with these you remove the must have for vehicle #2. I tend to do solo riding, so waiting or looking for that other vehicle could be an issue or require some wait time. The other dilemma is sled batteries tend to not be as easily accessible as they could be, so that means taking partially apart two sleds for that jump start. They also provide a USB port to power other things if you're in a pinch. When on sale, the amount spent of them is pretty marginal, IMO. They are small, likely find a padded pouch for it and store it in the glove box of my sled, making it easy to keep it charge as needed between rides vs. stuffed away. I have never relied on electric start to date, my new sled will be the first, so I think pro's out way the con's.

Agreed above…. And with divulging some of those basic numbers from revenue and costs, expand on the tax funding as well, what is received, what is asked for, how is is lobbied, etc….. educating people is a good thing for many, but as I said, it will also Bring the negative comments too, that I know for a person volunteering, that’s a big slap in that face, which is life unfortunately and must be accepted as such.

Absolutely no reason basic numbers can’t be shared publicly, even on the website. Double edge sword I’m sure, but it really puts everything into perspective year to year for all that partake in the sport that will see positive and negative feedback.

The slight twist to last year though was you were asked not to leave your health district, trails passing between them were “closed” and the OFSC supported this….. of course they had too. I agree with your statement, but there was more to the story last year than a normal year.

Seems to be some sort of mental block that an increase will affect things significantly, but I’m of the opinion as you. Now a multi permit discount I think makes way more sense for those that are in that position.

I’ve used the hand mirrors for years, except the last couple since I somehow melted mine. Always worked well enough and never had issues with them (or custom numbers….lol) in Quebec, maybe lucky or we were just a nice bunch of guys when we ran into the QPP a few times 😃

Ya, but I just can’t see that being enough to support the kind of spending or money people are dropping on these things, but I don’t have any first hand experience either to really comment on that with any confidence, thankfully.

I suppose one of the good side effects of the last 12+ months, people seem to have money….. Makes me wonder though if all that extra cash is from folks cashing in on that new found home equity.

Definitely a crap shoot…. overpay on used, that you’ll get or buy new, that might miss the boat.

And at the recent resale prices, it really makes a new purchase an easier pill to swallow. one of the great thing things with forums is lots of folks will offer up their stuff here first before kijiji route!
