Well, a disgruntled slomo from a couple of days ago has finally warmed up and got the camera working!

Did not get too many kilometers around Vars area on Thursday as -20 pretty cold and still frozen from previous adventure. However, Friday was a lot warmer, but very windy. Trails are drifting in and visibility due to low light contrast is a small problem. Still, got a good trip in before lunch and will be out again later. Have no idea where any of these photos were - to be honest I was lost most of the time, but should give a good idea of conditions here. (that ________ sledjunk did not post any gps tracks!)

If you lost a Browning Camoflage Ball Cap, I hung it on this sign just north of Russel.

I'll bet you someone with absolutely no previous experience in the area would appreciate them! Great place to ride, but trails don't have the trail number signs on them as in other locales. By the afternoon, I had placed a few of the towns in the area and had a better idea of where things were.

As mentioned, was out in the afternoon - blowing snow turned to blowing ice pellets, conditions got very windy and as you can see, the trails filled in almost immediately after a groomer pass:

Thanks Mr. Groomer!

Before this trip had got in about 200 klicks on the backroads around the camp north of Parry Sound and had a chance to get my machine in fairly good shape. Sled started no problem at -29 after sitting over night, and thank goodness for the incandescent bulb in the tail light which melted the snow over the lens preventing a rear end collision!

As well, an attachment from RPM Composites over the air intake prevented blown snow from forming over the air filter - something you don't think about until you start running through drifts.

My thanks to the local clubs for the great trails! ( I did buy a ticket for the sled draw from district 1 at the Toronto sled show) -_-

  • 5 weeks later...

One of the good things about sledding is seeing different parts of the province or in some cases the country and on this trip just after New Year's was actually looking forward to coming back for the Curds Festival in August....

However, some bad news:

Cheese factory fire a blow to eastern Ontario town

"Residents of the eastern Ontario community of St. Albert say they are devastated after the factory of their century-old cheese co-operative was destroyed in a fire Sunday. Crews were still battling the blaze at 4:30 p.m. in the parts of the factory that remained standing after the fire first broke out Sunday morning.

The St. Albert's cheese factory, known for its distinctive cheese curds, was established in 1894 in St. Albert, Ont., about a 45-minute drive southeast of Ottawa."

Many of the people watching the fire were in tears as they watched the fire spread on Sunday afternoon, according to the CBC's Ashley Burke."It's the backbone of the town, so we'll have to see what's happening in the future," said Andre Lavergne, whose grandfather was one of the founders of the co-op. Rejean Ouimet, the co-operative's general manager, told CBC that there are plans in the works to rebuild the factory."

No word on the fate of the Curds Festival yet. But you know, if I hadn't have seen the billboard on my sled while through the region, would not have paid the slightest attention to what would have been just another factory fire.

For some, however, there’s no fast replacement for St. Albert’s product.

About 200 kilograms of St Albert cheese curds are delivered each week to La Pataterie Hulloise in Gatineau, north of Ottawa. Owner Richard Rivers says he knows from the squeak when he takes a bite in the morning that it’s fresh, and perfect for his poutine

20th Annual Curds Festival to go on!

From the Globe and Mail, Feb. 5, 2013

The company plans to rebuild as quickly as possible and on Monday decided that, despite the setback, the show will go on this August. That’s when the town holds its 20th annual Festival de la Curd and the town turns into Canada’s own Curdistan. The date is months off, but Mr. Ouimet is determined: “We’re going to be back. And we’re going to have a party.”
