Okay ,I will start the bashing......reason 1 ) why should the thousands of Northern Ontario snowmachine owners that don't use OFSC trails at all ,( many do not even live close to trails and use crown land instead)  pay for people in Southern Ont like yourself to do your sport. The political pushback would be substantial. ...Reason #2 - the lack of control over trail enforcement occurred when the Onrario Government took on more control over the OFSC a few years back, ....having them take complete financial control over the system, with  would put non snowmobilers ( politicians)  decision control over a complex system that needs expertise not more bureaucracy.

Yep Ive heard that argument before..I also own land in the north that is surrounded by crown land on 3 sides for miles. I will always have a place to ride. My fear is simply that the system will not continue as is based on what has been done in the past. I would like to it grow and flourish for the future. Not sure there is an easy answer..but I believe it needs to be different than it is currently to succeed. Cheers.

same song, different verse... again, they collect our trail permit money, rely on volunteers, except for the main administration office staff, and reap the monetary benefit without the overhead. it is not sustainable. Ski

I have said this for years, “it’s not sustainable” as it is currently …make the sled lic a trail permit and every sled in the province would have a permit. Need for enforcement would drop significantly. But this answer is too easy…let the bashing begin.

  3. Planning a week long Gaspe tour and spend a couple days in Murdochville to play in the Chic Chocs for first week of March. Lots of time yet but need see things open up and get back to some sort of normal.

Your not going to want to hear this but....spend the extra money and go tandem axle. You won’t regret it. Rubber torsion is superior to spring as well. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. My enclosed was a 7’x12’ with 2’ V nose and I hated backing in the second sled, even after doing it for 4 yrs it was still a PITA. The only reason I’m considering another 7’W enclosed is because I would be able to just drive them both out. Is your enclosed a lightning?

I had a hybrid 8.5W about 5-6yrs ago and I remember it didn’t tow as nice as the 7’W enclosed.

Yes legend lightning 21 ft,16 ft box and v nose is 5 ft so a lot more room up front. I like it.

  6. Yup. Great business. Legend is a great trailer. Go w 7ft wide. Pulls so much nicer. I put sleds in alternating frontwards, backwards, takes up less space. Btw I never use the front unload door. Wish it wasn’t there. Your mileage may vary...

  7. The road is the trail. It wasn’t plowed in the past...Just a parking spot off the highway. However like I said I haven’t been there this year. Not sure if anyone more local could comment. Good luck.

Its all about the right tool for the job. The snowmobiling that I most enjoy is on groomed twisty trails as found in Muskoka, Kawartha and Haliburton. I want the sled to turn "right now" when I say so, and stay on my side of the trail. I am not a boon docker at all, so I don't need the 137 or longer track, and believe it or not, a 137 won't turn like a 129, all other things being equal. That doesn't matter if you aren't riding nine tenths pace or more, but sometimes I want to push the handling envelope. This season I have only ridden in D4,5 and 9, and a 129 skid is no(or little) advantage there. The 137 skid would help the suspension bridge the moguls that develop on the wide open fields. If I always, or mostly rode the field trails of south western Ontario and the power corridors of the far north, then I would want more power and a 137. Since you admit to looking on the dark side at turbo power and powder length chassis, your chosen riding is different than mine (I hope). Your tool should be different from mine. I tried a 2006 Renegade 600 SDI, and a 2015 Renegade 600 ETEC. I liked both sleds and will admit that they gave up very little turning ability once set up absolutely for turning accuracy, but the extra trail breaking ability that they offered, I never used. Hence my preference for the shorty. Also I like the practicality of the 129. Takes up less room in the crowded toy garage, in the trailer and in the back of my truck. Obviously Skidoo feels that there aren't a lot of people feel as strongly as I do about this. I might quit sledding not because of a pandemic, or global warming or politics, but because my sled choice became obsolete.

I hear you. Would seem crazy to give up/lose a member of the fraternity because the sled he wants to ride is only available 4-5 in longer than was previously available.... Hope you keep riding. Cheers

My 129 got me into the woodlot today. I wouldn't want to break trail all day w/ it, but it can be done.

@tricky @signfan @irREVerent @Muskoka Bill As the corporate types would say, "You're not looking at the big picture". Some of us were probably changing fouled plugs on sleds before these 'experts' were born.

Yes I hear you. I have 50+ yrs behind the handlebars myself. The demographic is changing...wether we like it or not.

I was surprised by the handling w/ the extra weight consider the 4 strokes I had ridden in the past. Well I waited long enough w/ my REV before a sled came along that I liked ;)

Can someone explain to me what is the rationale for the Freeride model is? To my uneducated eye, I really can't see any difference between it & the multiple Summit & Backcountry models.

How difficult is it to mate the 129" MXZ tunnel to the 4 stroke 'front end'? I'm sure it can be done depending on how much re-engineering you want to do. Or is it just something simple as riveting a shorter tunnel to the front? Anyone have a couple of donor sleds for some prototype work?

Free ride is closer to a summit. Backcountry is more of true crossover from trail. I agree seems to be a lot of model overlap. Keep in mind we are a small market segment here in Ontario. I took my 146 backcountry to Golden BC for month of March last year. When you spend time in the west you can see how much more application there is for these models. Shared a couple pics..just because.

Agreed! But Skidoo continues to $hit in their own nest by not offering a 900 ace sled with a 129 skid. Crazy. I put over 20K km on my Blizzard and was lucky enough to find a low km TNT for the next couple of years, but I sure would like to buy a new one and I am not alone. Maybe Polaris will have something?

I haven’t looked that close on the new offerings...but I’m not sure I understand. The 900 is only offered in renegade 137 in skid? Vs 129 in skid? Why is that such a big problem? I don’t think I’ll ever buy shorter skid again myself. I was looking for 900 turbo in 146-154 backcountry but will have to stick with 850 if that’s the chassis for me. Thanks for clarifying.

where we ride their is 0 advantage to a4 stroke. couldnt imagine the weight up front

I agree with this. However, I would like to try skidoo’s 900 turbo in a long track version just to see how it handles? I’m curious.

I imagine all the lakes will be a mess now. Eels had slush on it a weekend ago. Stoney WAS good on Friday as per my pics.

Yup this last blast of snow has really brought up the slush. Staked lakes that are well travelled on both sides of stake line are better. The lakes we run up here not staked are a mess. Double edged sword..can’t have looots of snow and not have slushy lakes. It will get better. Just takes time.

  14. I have the 1.6 in ice cobra stud on my 19 850 backcountry, my wife’s 600 renegade has the 1.25 ice cobra stud.  Pre stud Only way to go in my opinion. I play off trail on logging roads and like the taller lug for what I do.

edit to add. I pay for track upgrade to keep extra warranty. Worth the few bucks to pay for track and have extra warranty.

Haaaa, from my experience with my '18 and my '19 MXZ X 850's, original factory belt, easy break in, always warmed it up before any big pulls, or high speeds. 5000kms each on both sleds. No issues. Always maintained proper belt adjustment also. Just a few things to consider from my own personal experience..

Yep same. 19 850 backcountry w 146 skid. 4500 mi and original BRP belt. I rode this machine in Golden BC for several days last March. All good. I hear of others w belt failure on 850s but I’m not seeing it myself. ?

Ungrateful bastard!!! I had nothing but smiles and waves today, as I slowed right down for walkers, dog walkers and skiers on multi-use and OFSC trails in south western D4 today.

  17. Any updates on this section? I haven’t been over to see it for myself but would think it would be well travelled now? Any reason it won’t be staked this winter? Not a connecting trail between health units...thanks.

Is the entire lake staked?  The ITG is still showing the 181a section as red.

If you head up the lake toward Elephant is the jumping off point for 180 obvious?

Correct, 181A not staked. Lots of tracks though. If you go north to jump on 180 stay on east side of lake and follow the tracks. Yes it is quite obvious where you pick up 180. Pay attention to your map and you’ll be fine. Further north is the narrow section the locals call the ripples, usually open water and unsafe unless you know the route around it.

Anyone ran it lately?  Much slush?  I was surprised to see it staked given the poor ice on many lakes this year.

Yes was on it yesterday. Slushy in places for sure. Stake lines are packed well. Also, I was north up to ripples and over to elephant and benoir. Well travelled and good shape...as usual you have to know where to stay away from. Cheers.

So remove wheel and grease bearing each time and leave center cap on.

Yes you can. There is outer cap of decorative cap and rubber cap for bearing buddy. You can use screw driver to remove the cap from centre decorative hub, remove it and then rubber cap on hub. grease and replace... Or..you can simply jack up and remove rim, centre cap comers off with rim. It’s easier in the end. Try it once and you will see.

My guess is they would be maintained to some extent. Can’t imagine they would just turn the groomer around at the boundary.

Pretty sure that is in fact what Is happening.  Was out w club brushing trails after Christmas and said not grooming trails that connect to next health unit. Some trails are better than none...going to be a messed up year.
