Overall when you look at what it takes to have a trail system, I agree that our permit price is fair.   However, when you buy permits and never ride a single meter of OSFC trail, it no longer seems like a good purchase.  Like buying $200 snowshoes and never stepping foot in them.

Hopefully we will have a better season this year.   The more rules that the OFSC keeps placing on the system that creates costs, takes away from the trail system and discourages the generosity of land owners.   We have lost to many trails from disrespectful riders and the fear of liability.

The Quebec system, for a resident, could be seen as cheaper than Ontario when you consider the inclusion of insurance.  The QC government supports its to maintain the tourism.  Smart!

I’d say steal of a deal.
But when you don’t use it at all, it does create doubts about buying one, I have some doubts this year since I never used mine last year at all, but those doubts are not at all because of the price.
Im sure I’ll buy next week anyways and hope I use it this year…if not, at least I’ve supported the cause.
Although this year I think I’ll not put the permit on my sled until I need to use it so I don’t need to remove it after not even possibly using it through the season.
Should be a tax right off though….lol

I thought there was an AGM thread on here, that said they decided not to raise the permits, after such a dismal winter, and riding season. Ski

I thought permit increase discussions and approvals would have to be done sooner than at the end of the previous season to be in affect since it requires MTO approval, that likely takes a bit of time.
As for an increase this year, not sure why I thought there was…clearly I’m mistaken.

I am a little surprised to hear on this forum people criticize the permit amount…even with the crappy seasons we have had…especially knowing what so many pay for a QC pass, sleds, gas, trucks, trailers, etc….$221 bucks is a small drop in the bucket all things considering.

    They are out of touch

And in-case you haven't seen the news, TD ( banking side ) has been taking it on the chin quite a bit lately.

    Expect rates to increase!

Yes, I have.....makes me wonder what the fall out will or could be to recoup that mess....

thanks.  I had watched them, very informative, but nothing about installing a Cardo in the Advex

I thought there was mention of communicators used in the helmets, maybe another video of theirs or not the Cardo system.....but I thought I recalled some issues with the Advex helmet and communicators (some????) - I listened to the videos last year, so memory could be failing....

I was born in 1980 so I only heard of the good old days of the 1970's. I got my first sled in 98 a 340 Fan Formula S which I traded the next year for a MXZ 440 Fan which I loved. From what I have read and experienced the late 90's was a decent time. We had a cottage in Haliburton so we had good access to decent snow, I remember a winter where it was waist high on our lake. I remember going up the hydro corridor to Whitney, lot's of lake running and Jan and Feb pretty much being a guarantee with sometimes a bit of March. I remember being able to drop my sled in Port Perry a couple of winters and ride all the way to Haliburton. I remember my uncle in northern Quebec taking me out in 92 for my first ride in Saguenay and being instantly hooked. The sheer number of people on the trails, the comradery, the trailside bars and burger joints full of people, deep snow fun and fast lake running. We sold our family cottage 25 years ago and I kept up sledding but it was a pain driving 2.5 hours from the city and having to go when the weather was right so back in 2013 I sold my last sled a 2 up touring after my kids were born, I needed the money and I certainly didn't have the time or money to truck it back and forth from the city. Now 11 years later I have moved to Fenelon Falls and will likely be able to ride from my yard at best or at worst be nearer to the snow. I have an ATV and it's a blast but I have been dreaming about sledding for 11 years, it never let go of me, I still have my mint condition SKI DOO riding gear which I never gave up because I knew there would come a day again when I would get a sled again. Last spring I bought a used sled for the first time ever, after the lousy winter there seemed to be a ton of mint condition used sleds being dumped on the market. I ended up buying a 2017 MXZ Sport (Carbed) with only 1,200 Km's on it and including a 1 up aluminum Triton trailer for $7.5K which seemed like a steal to me after I had looked at buying new. I couldn't justify 20K or more for something that can have such a limited season with winters being so unpredictable. So here I am super pumped about the prospect of the upcoming season, knowing I am going to be living near the trails and can just go when the weather hits. Hoping for a good winter but even if it's garbage I can still take advantage of whatever comes.

Great to hear some people, or a person :) returning to the sport!

The rail line from Fenelon seems to open quickly enough when there is snow, so hopefully treats you well living there over the winter months......and with the trailer, it is only 1.5hrs to Dorset, most years a great place to start from with usually more consistent good conditions.

And Kudos to you that your gear from 11 years ago still fits...lol.

I think you have 2 months to save the $50.00, they don’t have a cap/limit or are going to run out, so I think there is no urgency or panic to purchase.

the only number that matters is the final one.

It is one month to save $80.00 by the looks of it - $214 to Nov 1 vs. $294 that is regular fee.

After Nov 1 it is $244.

Then full pop after Dec 1.

Agreed, what matter is the number in the end, but the early buy helps to get the clubs what is needed to get things rolling for the start up.

Flip side is those that may buy after the discount is decreased, means more money in the OFSC/clubs pockets....but there must be a magic number where that makes overall sense based on number of permits sold and at what price.

Not quite that simple Stoney. Without going out to check my sled, I'm pretty certain they started numbering at 1 last year. This year they started numbering at 5001. You need to subtract 5000 from this years permit number to get a true idea of how many were sold.

Well that explains why I purchased on day one and I am in the 9000 range. I was surprised to see so many of us buying on day one. Maybe the first 5k are the day permits?

I did some digging from last year on a thread where permits were discussed and this is what was mentioned about the permit numbers for the 2024 season.

grover_yyz bought on day 1 for 2024 season and he was possibly permit 4000+ based on the permit numbers starting 5001 for 2024 season.

sledguy74 & ontariof7 bought on day 1 for 2025 season and they are 302 and less.

So possibly a huge gap between permits bought last year and this year on day 1.

I noticed when I replaced my runners last year they seem to be wearing a little ahead of centre. ALso, I've heard there's benefits of shimming your skis to move the wear patch further back will improve handling.  I ended up installing the Adventure/Cobra Head runners and although they work extremely well, I do find that they need a decent amount of steering effort.  Will the shims help with that?

I would imagine if you move the pressure point closer to the middle of the ski or the spindle, it should equate to easier steering effort.

Did you happen to increase the carbide length at the same time with the new runners vs. what you had before?

Based on their website, the 8" and 10" reduces ease of ride a fair amount, not surprising of course.

  9. I recall someone stating the OFSC will purposely not start at 01 some years for permit numbers, but rather start at 1001, 2001, etc.....some years for some reason or another.

Based on a 302 number posted up so early, I would say it is safe to say they started at 01 and 300 permits could have easily been sold on day 1, when sledguy74 ordered his permit.

I usually wait until the end of the month to order mine, as do many others, see what the numbers are then.

Hopefully it is not down by too much considering last years bust of a winter and the way the economy is looking right now.

If it was the Polaris 600 I would have bought it right away. Just not a Doo guy.

I wasn’t either until I bought one, like all manufactures, they have there issues, but I’m happy with mine.
The G4 chassis for a taller person isn’t ideal though, but a higher seat makes it better.

  11. When I was looking at Klim and FXR the other year, I found they both were very close when trying on in the store for comfort, weight, price, etc...

I was looking at their warmer lines for the cold vs. daily wear though.

At the end, my decision came down to pockets, FXR had more, so that is what I bought.

I have never looked at either for daily attire, I generally use less expensive stuff for that and older items kicking around the house, so not sure what that line up looks like or compares to one another.

I found a 2020 Riot on the weekend but it's a bit of a drive to look/get it.  It checks off my boxes though.

I recall these had really good reviews with the change in skid from the fox float skid helping there trailer manners.

There were two variations as well, one more off trail based and one more of a true cross over.

With some nice graphic package too.

No kidding, right? And without having to break a sweat.

The other day I offered one of them $100 to come with me for an hour, mix a bag of sandmix in a wheelbarrow, shovel it into three 5 gallon pails and hook it on a rope so I could pull it up to the roof to do a chimney repair. I guess rinsing stuff off with the hose was the deal breaker.

I was able to recruit my youngest daughter today so I feel slightly better. Atleast my money stays in the family. lol

I kid you not. It's just for the next couple months, but still. Christmas is just around the corner.

My wife is taking care of a dear friend thats at the end of life. Bad timing for business but it's something thats important to her.

I know you are not kidding - it just really shows the mindset of so many Canadians, who are not in the position to turn down a decent pay cheque!
