  1. Geraldton to Nipigon is doable.  Just follow the Natural Gas pipeline.  Bring Gas!  As you near the Nipigon River, you'll cross a road that may or may not be plowed, that runs toward Cameron Falls dam.  That's about the only way to cross the river.  When you cross the river, you'll ditch bang for a while until you get to hydro lines, that you follow most of the way to Nipigon.  Most of this route will have snowmobile traffic.  From there, maybe best to try and find somebody to trailer you.  Sorry. My trailer contact has moved on.  Good luck.

  2. I did it with the super light weight cover that came with my old early 90's yamaha. The cover and machine survived fine. Not so much my ears, from my wife giving me grief over it. I now use the power washer on the heavier canvas covers on my Polaris sleds.

This is the most insane part about it.....just speaks volumes of the type of people that live in and around the GTA....

Not trying to stir stuff, but I think it also kinda says something about who the the Other parties keep picking to lead them?

    Ice wasn't "out"yet?

    Sounds bassakwards to me.

    How doo you mean?

I would think that you could drive accrost while the ice was in?

And not git accrost 'till next season?

Shirley you can't ford that river even in the middle of summer - can you?

Probably a ferry.  They tend to not like ice.  Freeze up and Break up are equally challenging in the far north.

    SDB (or whoever else):

From a post that I read on the Wawa skidoo club facebook page - it sounds as if they are simply adding a second line next to the current hydro line, not replacing?

Starting at Anjigami and heading NW.

    Can anyone confirm or deny?

They updated the Anjigami facility in 2003, and it must be 6-8 times as large as it was before.

I wonder what the porpoise for this is?

They haven't built any new dams in 50 years have they?

If they aren't running a new line up from down south (and - maybe that is phase II of the project, not yet scheduled?) then I would have to wonder where the extra hydro would be coming from to justify the expansion?

Unless of course it is just a re-stringing of the old and not a second line?

There is a new line being constructed between Thunder Bay and Wawa called the East-West tie.  As far as I understand it, we have a surplus of power in the North-west,  and there's no way to get it over to the more populous regions to the east.

I use my CC for virtually everything.

If I complain, I'm just one small voice. When Visa or MC or who-ever calls, they listen.

And Purolator? It's owned  by Canada Post.

    FWIW.

I check CAREFULLY before purchasing anything on line these days. If Purolator is involved, and no alternative is available, I shop elsewhere.

I hear you about Purolator.  They are the absolute worst.  Ironically, Canada Post delivers (almost) to the door, while I have go into town to Purolator's depot to get stuff.  Having said that, currently waiting a package from CanPar that was supposed to have been delivered Tuesday, but seems to have gone into a black hole in Toronto.

need more local involvement, by more than a handful of burnt out former volunteers, that remember how it "was".  most residents of those communities look at grooming as a great option to make it easier to ride but, most never leave the communities further than 25-40kms to go to fish, hunt, camps, etc... their feelings revolve around seasonal roads, routes, trails that are on crown land that shouldnt cost them anything to utilize. they dont see the need to spend all the time, money, and energy to groom for tourists who may or may not come.

could it happen again? sure, will it? is the bigger question.

    Exactly!

From what I remember of TOP D in '08 or '09, the trail used forest access roads from White River to the White Lake crossing. From there to the M'wadge turnoff, we were on the powerline. I think that stretch is relatively mild (my S-I-L would disagree) compared to the terrain from Marathon to Nipigon. If CN could be convinced to allow recreation use on the former Kinghorn Sub' (I know I'm delusional) the portion from Nipigon to TB, would be relatively easy. But from what we know there is little to no interest in sledding in that area.

There is a huge interest in sledding, just not riding groomed trails.

Deadfall is a major concern for that area I think.

The north shore seems to git it's share of ice storms, and - maybe deadfall aint the biggest issue, but down sapplings anyway.

If you have longtracks and want to go play, you could ride out of Terrace Bay in a few directions (not South) and maybe get a ways.

Depending on how much snow they have. Some years a lot, some years hardly any - as they are on the wrong side of the lake for any lake effect. (usually)

There is a million loony bridge yonder that should see a skdoo at some point again one day...

Even when the trail system was in place over there, it still never went west of Nippigon as Thunder Bay is a black hole for trail support, and has been that way all along.

Actually, Thunder Bay was not the black hole. At one time, they boasted the largest snowmobile club membership anywhere. A township south and west of Thunder Bay(Neebing)  was the black hole. Thunder Bay was very pro snowmobile until 3 or 4 crappy winters, and the local economy tanking killed the number of permit holders. The club couldn’t recover and that was the end of organized snowmobiling here. Nobody has been interested enough to try and bring it back.

Not the area that the OP asked about but what about the old CN Kinghorn Sub? I have seen pics of ATV riders on it. From the scenery I've seen driving along Hwy 11 from Jellicoe down to Nipigon it would be pretty impressive.

That is potentially doable in places, but I know at least one culvert has failed, and would be tough to get around. Most of the larger bridges have concrete barricades on them as well. CN still owns the route, and does not do regular engineering inspections of anything on that route. They consider anyone on the former track as trespassers.

  11. It would be incredibly difficult. The trail from Marathon to Terrace Bay can still probably be run, you’d want to pack a power saw. From Terrace Bay to Nipigon would be next to impossible. That trail was on and off the power line, and the off power line parts have not been ventured upon in years. If you could get to Gravel River, it’s possible to run on the lake to Red Rock. Beyond there to Thunder Bay, there’s lots of private land to get around.  It would not be an easy trip. As mentioned previously, the province is basically on shut down right now, so this wouldn’t be something to try this year.

    Not this year LOL

    New handlebar & bottom pan.

NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIFT SLED WITH FRONT BUMPER...

If it’s anything like my 06 Switchback, you’re pretty much just removing the “bumper” by trying to lift the machine with it.

we stayed at the golden nugget in geraldton YEARS AGO... BP, did they have a name change? was a "decent place" not 5 stars but, clean and near the trail at the time. Ski

There is a Golden Nugget and Silver Nugget. If I recall correctly, the Silver Nugget was the better of the two. Between Bridges tops either.

  14. In Geraldton, Between Bridges Motel is probably the best bet. A bit out of town on Hwy 11, but arguably the nicest place. Also, Silver Nugget and Crown & Anchor in town. Not much in Nakina. Long Lac has a decent place, but the name escapes me. Only gov’t run place I’m aware of if the MNRF’s Greenstone fire base, just north of Geraldton, but that’s strictly for gov’t employees on business.

Talk to your automobile insurer about modified vehicles.

They can deny a claim if your tire size isn't what came on the vehicle from the factory.

You can REALLY get in deep doo-doo for the smallest mod if it isn't declared.

Insurance companies have entire buildings full of people whose only job is to figure out a way to deny your claim.

  16. Welcome and congrats on the cottage purchase.

For what you say you’re looking for, I highly recommend the Polaris LTX 550 fan. If you can find what the dealers around Thunder Bay call the “International Edition”, I’d pick that up.  It’s got wider skis (“Pro-Float” I think they’re called), electric start, 2 up seat, and, a 144” track. Perfect for around the cottage, ice fishing, and it can be a suitable introduction to touring, if you’re so inclined.

Good luck. Lots of good advise on here...
