The online system cuts out a bunch of paperwork.

There is an option to allow the club you chose, to contact you via email for volunteering.

Personally, I think that's better. If someone wants to help, and the club has a process to contact etc.

One needs to want to get involved. Others just buy the permit and complain, not knowing the struggles.

When I moved and went to the local dealer to buy a permit, there were 4 options of club. I asked the dealer which club I should contact to volunteer.

One club's trail was across the road from my place, a different club at the back.

The dealer told me who needed the most help and that sealed the deal.

Guess that was a benefit to no online permits.

I'm not sure all districts and clubs follow up quite like we do unfortunately. And from my experience and what I've heard from others, it's pretty easy to get turned away, not feel welcomed or just not know a soul there. I'm persistent in case you didn't know, lol. I emailed a few times and then showed up and recognized my gas fireplace service dude so figured I was safe enough to stick around. @Faceman handed over the website and facebook credentials and I was off! Since then I've met the whole crew and consider many of them good friends.

Don't just complain, be persistent. Most clubs don't have a great set up for reaching out to you IF they even get your name. So don't leave it as checking off that box.

Maybe we should not have on line permit sales,  & go back to in class driver training. On line is easier but is hurting clubs when it comes to getting volunteers.

Why does it hurt clubs? I haven’t been around long enough to know how it used to work. The funding model hurts clubs vs them doing permit sales? Just curious, other than seeing some old paperwork I have no idea how it was done pre 2016 when I walked into that man cave of snowmobile dudes 😂

We need bridge builders, as do many clubs.

Most can swing a hammer, run a saw, lay down boards.

That's as easy as pounding in a stake, hanging a sign, even running a groomer.

    Grunt work.

    We need more of them.

The tougher bridge work is the bridge between land owners, governments, municipalities, counties, those who would push back at organized sledding and "herding the cats" that are the groomer operators.

I self identify as a feral cat.

    Anti social, avoid humans.

That type of person is much harder to come by.

    Christy can do both FTW!!

Haha, I forgot about that video! It sometimes feels like I’m herding cats for sure but we are a good team. Thanks for the Stoney Keppel Riders love! I love our little club and wish for other clubs to gather such a great group.

  4. Lots of really good questions being asked to the Executive Committee this morning by Club Volunteers. 😊 Join a club and get involved! My club is always looking for volunteers 😉

IMO that is always just as important as making sure your club carried the votes voice of it's membership. Over the past 18 years I've seen many new volunteer club exec leave AGM weekend with the knowledge and go to friendships from other clubs to give them a good running start at running a club. Most are still well involved. 🍻

Seems like yesterday Yukon, TVBrian and myself were doing AGM seminars/workshops on how to set your club up with a Webpage, then a few years later Social media lol 🍻

    100%

I did do my part and vote of course and I did learn a lot from the break out sessions too. But by far the best part is brainstorming with other Club Members.

It isn't for everyone, but clubs do need the volunteers that just want to stake and build bridges as well as the people that are good at organizing the behind the scenes crap. Although I also stake and help build bridges I'm definitely the behind the scenes person. Today has already gotten away from me because I've had phone calls with 2 landowners, 2 neighbouring Club Execs, our main groomer operator aka @vooodooo and emails to the locksmith and all Club Volunteers. But now plans are forming to get some gates installed and meet on the site of a bridge project this weekend. It's all coming together...next year will be easier, right? 🤪 AGM was my networking with other behind the scenes organizers and I definitely miss that.

Looks like you guys got some nasty weather in the last hour or 2. Hope everything was Ok.

Thanks, all good here for now!

I’m not sure why but most systems seem to go just south of our place. Maybe it’s our placement between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Knock on wood we haven’t been bad so far. Sounds like another tornado touched down about an hour south of us. After similar weather last week Tornado Tuesday seems to be trending.

    I will be there!!

That is where we first met!!! I miss the real life AGM. It was like a reward for the years volunteer hours and so great to chat in person with other club members.

  8. Is anyone else going to log in to the AGM this weekend? I'll send you a virtual hello 👋

If you are in a club and interested I think today might be the last day to register.

A factor could be a lack of willing volunteers to operate the booths. Many are usually older and may have concerns.

Agreed, I know I was on the fence about whether I’d work the booth. I think the dealers are also short on sleds so they don’t need the show this year really.

Just keep good battery on the sled and you won’t need that jumper starter thing. I replace sled batteries every 3 years and use it in atv. Same battery 👍. Generator batteries get tossed out at four years too and I use them for emergency spares. Never had an issue with a dead sled battery and been riding electric start sleds since late 2000’s. I bring boaster cables but thankfully never needed them. Battery dies and is dead from a bad cell, boaster won’t help you anyways.
I find they last another year or two in atv before they are toast. Batteries are only about 140 with tax. Keeping a good battery prevents stator from going bad too. It is all co-related. Cheers

Maybe that’s why it wandered off. I had issues a few years ago but was heading on a trip without my husband so despite his assurances that “I’d be fine” I grabbed a new battery for myself. Sold that sled last fall and have a new one now so that battery pack that I always had to have has been left somewhere and forgotten.

I suggest anyone considering getting a "start" battery consider purchasing a product that offers more than just a vehicle boost. I've been using the Antigravity products for several years and currently have the XP1 (lots of functionality, but the case is a bit big). At the hotel, I can use it to charge my phone, helmet cam, etc. Therefore, I only have to search for 1 outlet in the room to charge the battery while I'm sleeping.  They come with adapters for most/all phones, battery boost cables, and a Boost switch - which has turned over a Dodge RAM truck. Comes with AC and car charge connector.

I try and carry "kit" which serves more than 1 purpose, so having this to power almost anything I may bring along - it can even flash SOS on the flashlight.

Looks very similar to the one that disappeared here. One more big search and I’ll give in and buy a new one.

Is the relay issue an old thing perhaps, I know I have read about this issue on more than one occasion and if I am not mistaken it seemed to be a Doo thing, with an easy fix, but you have to have the spare on hand or you are screwed.......maybe more of an issue for those that choose to thaw their sled in a heated garage between rides.....which I do myself.

I have carried a small folding saw as well many other things for years, but I was more looking or talking about the other not so common things you might need for a Doo or a 4-stroke specific to these two points.

We had the relay issue with our old Nytro, we just always carried an extra in a warm pocket.

You around mid week usually? I be up for a tourer of your area. Never been far above own sound.always wanted to go, but no one ever commits mid week/  Maybe I can talk too slow into coming too, if he is around.

Yep, I’m freelance for most of my work so can shift things around a lot of the time. Where is your home base?

Wow. There's a name from sled racing days some 50 years ago.

They all had kids, some that raced Snowcross for years just like the Dads raced oval. I saw one of the new generation on test ride the Lynx day up here, he was super fun to watch! Still a big sledding family for sure.

I rode that area for a few days last season w my better half.  We throughly enjoyed it. Was highly recommended to check out the clubhouse. (Very nice btw!) Met a very nice group of locals and had a nice chat about the area….. fast forward about a month or so and I run into them at base camp at Abitibi! What are the odds??

    Glad you enjoyed it!

A few club members have camps/houses in Cochrane. Maybe Cary or Mike? And there’s a whole crew from Owen Sound that own another place-maybe one of the VanDolders?
