  1. I have two DESS keys with my sled (2015 900 ACE purchased in 2018). Never used the second key but carried it with me. Tried to use it this year for the first time and key didn't work. I have been lucky I did not need to use spare key. Now I need to bring sled in for key programming which is an inconvenience pain.

My old sled I had my spare key programmed for my sled and my friend's sled who I ride with incase either one of us looses a key there is a spare between us.

It may very well be that what passes for good quality and excellence is different in other countries than what is expected here. In the case of the Pinewood in Barry's Bay, the previous owners were always upgrading and making improvement to the facility including some not usually noticed by patrons - better ventilation, hard wood floors, better mattresses etc. and promoted a sense of concern for the environment. I hope they received a good return on their initial investment and hard work.

Thanks Grover for the mention of the Mountain View by Wilno - had no reason to try it out before but reviews are good and it is right on the trail.

I was not intending to hijack the thread by mentioning Mountain View. Since you mentioned them we have had many successful nights there and even with the new owners had nothing but great restful sleeps and excellent breakfasts. Not sure if the owner still helps out with the local club as they had a disagreement a few years ago about the groomer parking on his property.

  3. My old Polaris 550fan was stored in an old Uhaul truck box and there was little ventilation we realized too late as most of the parts that were steel were corroding quite badly. I now have a proper enclolsed trailer that the sleds are stored in and they have been fine. No rust or corrosion due to the side and top vents.

  4. Probably my last Saturday ride in the south as temps are going up. Left GTA in the rain and once over the ridges of highway 35/115 it started to snow. Lots of snow. Arrived at Fenelon Fall Superior Propane lot and greeted by a near full lot of trucks and trailers. Plan was a leisurely ride to Hailburton via some of the side trails off the railbed B103 (340 and the B104) to the #7 and stopped at the Pinestone to eat our packed lunches while watching cars race around the ice track. We continued to the north west side of Haliburton where trail #7 and B103 meet again. There were many riders out yesterday. At the #7/B103 junction there was four sledder relaxing another four coming from the north us three from the south and two coming from the east. We returned to Fenelon Falls via B103 and trails were starting to get bumpy. All riders we saw were courteous, stayed on their side of the trail, etc. Many two up riders and family rides.  Overall an excellent day trip clocking in 136km.

It was a perfect parking spot.   Not a tonne of space. Lots of people parking hopping into other cars.  More of car pooling area. Thanks again Grover. Great ride on E108 towards Campbellford, bumpy and humpy in some spots though.  Beauty in the forest.   Two groomers out on the way back.  I stopped and gave them the glove off thumbs up.  160km Fun afternoon.

E108 south of Rice Lake is a bumpy trail if there is not a lot of snow. Only taken it a couple of times over the years. Usually ride the lake once staked. I hope to get over that area once the restrictions have been lifted. Yes, its more of a car pool lot. I figured Covid would have emptied the lot.  Great hearing you had a great ride.

Let me know how it is north of Hwy 7. @Bigfish & I turned around west of the Reptile Zoo. He had run it last Sat' & said the snow was a bit thin. I have to go to Ptbo on Tues', I might haul the sled w/ me & stage east of Havelock & tour around those trails. I haven't ridden down there since '07 or '08.

Completed 220km trip from Peterborough to Stoney Lake and back. A great day for a ride with two friends and social distancing. We brought our own lunches and ate them on the trail. The pictures Revrnd posted was exactly what we also experienced. Great conditions north of Hwy7. Stoney Lake was a beautiful site to see. Many people walking, skating fishing and snowmobiling. Lake was smooth and staked but still showing red (no idea why). Trails south of 7 were very good for the lack of snow. Near to road crossings were lacking in snow and some exposed stone on the rail line.

We stopped in Havelock to get fuel and the trail to the Petro Canada was not the best. A back trail to avoid the homes and down a sidewalk to the Petro Canada/Tim's parking lot. I don't ever plan to do that ride again. I'll fill up in Norwood instead.

First picture is the parking lot in Peterborough. I thought showing up at 9am the lot would be full. There was plenty of room.
Second picture was at the entrance of a couple of fields. I laughed all the way through these fields.

Ran Stoney Lake today. No stake line, but a good packed trail from Viamede to Log Cabin Store (Reid's Store). Very small slush spot east of where the trail goes thru the islands. Good speed running.

Trail runs thru property owned by a couple that I know.

Not sure what this part of the lake is called but it's kind of funny. A lake as big as Stoney and the trail goes thru this tight little narrows.

Heading east to the Log Cabin Store (Reid's Store). They have regular and premium gas.

Stopped at the 702/707 intersection. 707 goes east across Kasshabog to E107.

Thanks Revrnd, I am riding tomorrow from Peterborough to Stoney lake and loop back. looks like I should have a good ride. Heading out at 9am for the day. First ride of the season.

  8. There are more law abiding riders than those who break the rules/law. Enforcement is the key as you stated so very well Yukon. Maybe signs on the trails on who to report violations and illegal activity. I have no idea who I would contact. OFSC, local club, municipal police or provincial police.

Yes we must be courteous to hikers on trails, who knows they could be the land owner and you don't want to piss them off

Exactly. You can't be too careful around hikers. The trail near Wilno now has a large road bypass because of idiots being disrespectful on the trail.

If you come off the 115 & drive past the NEW Kenworth location (white building in background), you've missed the lot.

Looking east towards the Old Keene Rd.

Thanks for the info and pictures. Shouldn't be an issue finding the place. Thanks Torches for the positive trail report.

  12. The trail map shows parking in south end of Peterborough. I go on Google Maps to street view and I don't see any type of lot to park in. Has anyone parked there before? I would like to try parking there once the trails open up more so I can travel further east on a day ride.

Seeing as this was near Keene, the ice fisherman & his buddies are lucky they didn't wind up in the water where Indian River flows into the lake.

I would think if you're going to be on a lake after dark a GPS would be a good idea to have.

I will never navigate Rice lake without GPS. Last year end of day Whiteout conditions and my GPS got me through without any issues.

Another sad and preventable death. I read elsewhere he was testing his machine after a repair and was not wearing a helmet.

A Clarington man has succumbed to serious injuries he suffered on Saturday evening after he was thrown from a snowmobile.

The victim, 63, was driving a snowmobile around 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 when he was ejected from the vehicle on a private laneway near Newtonville, say Durham police.

His snowmobile was the only vehicle involved in the collision, add police.
