Agree 100%. Personally I think that secure land access is the single  biggest risk to the sustainability of our sport. Without land access nothing else matters.

Funding is part of the solution and it may not be as expensive as one could think given, as you said, when you could be offsetting the costs with reduced costs of continuous reroutes.  Legislatively there needs to be work done to reduce or severely limit liability/ exposure  to landowners and trail

operators when user have “willing assumed” the risks.

they have went to this model for michigan's sled trails. but, they also get a small portion of the fuel tax for funding on top of trail permits. and for the most part the off raod motorcycle/orv/sled, communities are joined and each have their own seasonal permits, that fund updates for all seasons, and all users. Grooming data is not very helpful unless you have the traffic data for the trail as well. Posting just the grooming data will only encourage the “chase the groomer” mentality which only exacerbates the problem of concentrating traffic on specific trails. Which would you rather ride, a trail groomed 7 days ago or a trail groomed yesterday. With out traffic data the rider would tend to select the trail groomed yesterday thinking it will be a better ride. But if you knew the trail groomed yesterday sees hundreds of sleds per day where the trail groomed a week ago see little traffic. Which one do you think is in better shape?

That is one opinion. to most riders, "it is better to know, if it has been groomed recently or not".

In reality, any trail not groomed in 7 days, should be listed as yellow for "precaution", until an operators eyes, has saw it. Ski

  3. how about, the funding to make/deem snowmobile trails permanent, so logging/mining, private entities, cannot disrupt them during season, without that entity paying for use, and or rerouting? ESPECIALLY ON CROWN LAND. Our region suffers from this yearly. so much money and man hours wasted when someone decides... we need to use this now, immediately... yeah, we know we told you we didnt need to this year but... I cant imagine just in our area, how much money has been wasted/lost in the last 20 years, to this. Ski

The lady that used to work at Cindy’s has opened a restaurant with her daughter it’s right next door to the old restaurant . I haven’t been there yet this winter but it was open in September . Heading though there on Sunday

A group of local snowmobile club members in Dubreuilville, went to Hearst via Hornepayne this past Saturday, and stopped there and had a great lunch break. we will be up march 12-19. when will you be there? Ski

  5. I hate to say it but, 100.00cnd per year to keep warm hands was probably worth it. In reality, helmets are way more money, and should be replaced approximately every 5 years. Our racing org's wont let us use a helmet passed their 5 year build date (tag on inside of helmet), even if it was bought new on the 5th year.

My wife loves her heated fxr gloves, and I wouldnt hesitate to buy another pair, when they stop working. stop pulling your hair out,  I am doubting fxr will fix them after this long owning them. my advice,  buy another pair, and move on. but, I do wish you luck, Ski

  6. In that pic with the Hornepayne sign, and ice crossing sign, is down the hill from the Fuel station, in Dubreuilville. If you are standing there, and you look directly to your left, the big ole barn, is ours. If you are at the barn and look up the hill you can see where the club groomed a path from the D west trail that goes through town, on the barn property. The hole at the top of the hill puts you in our backyard. Enjoy your trip, wishing I was up there, right now. Ski

  7. 511Ontario is your friend, as well as listening to JJAM fm listen live, out of wawa. You can stream it on your phone, or laptop. They both update highway conditions, regularly. They opened the hwy later yesterday afternoon. but, you are right, you never know... Sometimes you may sit there for 20 minutes, 2 hours, 6 hours, or 2-3 days. And you get no warning or update to if/when.

At least you only had to backtrack from Batchwana Bay, to Heyden and take the Ranger Lake road cut off but, it still sucks... been there done that. Now, even in summer months, we check 511 before leaving the Soo. A few weeks ago for 3-4 days, the highway was more closed, than open.

Hope the rest of the trip is great and uneventful. should have a lot of smooth groomed trails, with close to a foot of fresh snow in the last few days, from Wawa to at least Hornepayne. Ski

If you are speaking about the red C101D to Foleyet, according to the Timmins FB page it is due to a large washout that is in the process of being repaired.

No PLC, I was answering ScottyR"s post above mine. I should have quoted it. I was just giving an opinion of how or why there were opening delays.  Now that you mention it, I do recall reading about the washout hampering that trail. Ski

No different with all the groomer problems around Chapleau and over to Hornepayne.    No reason for Tillsonburg to have a new groomer sitting in a shop while these tourist destinations up north are dealing with broken down equipment.

Not sure what is going on a Chapleau for groomer issues but, guessing it is a staffing, operator, volunteer issue. As for Hornepayne, they had a brand new (brand new) groomer, and sunk it one of the first days out. They received a replacement but, it is a farm tractor type, and they are having training issues, learning how to run it on some of their terrain.

All of these clubs used to have 2 or even 3 groomers, a back up, a spare, one to be maintained or repaired, while the others did the work. Now most of the clubs are down to 1 each, mostly. Can you imagine being responsible for 250, to close to 400 miles of trail, with only one machine, and possibly person to run it? When do you have time to change the oil, adjust, do routine maintenance, etc...? Then the sheer distance, and hours used, wears these machines out in a few years. add in rough terrain, etc... and it just gets worse.

White river has zero (zero!) people in the club, and no one in town, not even business owners help, donate anything to the club. So, Marathon, jumps up, to open to White river, all the way to within 20 miles or so of Dubreuilville, and reconnected to Manitouwdge, on their own, with one groomer. This needs to change, or the area is going to fail again. people are getting or already are burned out.  Ski

Green or red.  Show where the groomers have been, but only after the club calls the trail open.  The second it is closed hide all grooming activity on that segment.  It will give the riders what they want and will reduce volunteer workload having to complete updates as often.

With Ontario (and the OFSC) fully petrified of liability... That aint gonna happen. Imagine someone believing an open trail means green, and it hasnt had a groom in days, weeks, or is the first groom, or has a washout or rough section or three, road running, logging ops etc... The complainers, will complain even more, than they do now.

There should be 4 conditions... closed (closed means closed), red, maybe not groomed, packed, or signed well but, available, use extreme caution. yellow open, use caution, many areas of rough trail, issues, or signage... and green, mid season, conditions, signed, regularly groomed (and more than 2 groomer passes).

I truly believe you need an independent person listing the trails and their conditions (not someone on the club, with a business directly linked to the condition and availability of said trail). We have all been to places that the trail was green, should be yellow, or red that should be yellow, or even green, and we have all been on those that should not be listed as open (and vise versa). there is the prestige of being the first to open, and last to close, and I have personally saw both to play out, as they shouldn't have been listed open at all, at the time. this, needs to stop. Open when it is safe, close when you have issues, you wouldn't run your own equipment down, without fear of hurting it. Again... everyone has a different view on what is acceptable to ride on. Ski

  11. District should be bending over backwards to get this club a groomer, if they dont, cant, then district should be in the OFSC's ear. if that isnt the case, have the club step around the district, throw them under the bus, and go to the OFSC yourselves. that is ridiculous. good luck, to all. 12. We were on the border of rain/freezing rain, snow, at the house, north of Lansing, Michigan. We didnt get much of anything. I mean, it snowed, sleeted, freezing rain, then rain, and more snow but, I can still see the grass, and not too much icing here at the house.

but, that was a godsend. going to be 45 here today now. tomorrow below freezing, and back above freezing for high temps, for the foreseeable future. Ski

  13. Rode D trail from Dub to Hawk junction today, for a burger at the big bear. D trail south is rough with ruts but, "rideable". they are calling for a little snow every day, and decent snow (4-6 inches) weds and thursday. hoping the clubs can groom this up, it is rock hard, right now! skis are hooking ruts, and there are some slick spots, where the wind blew the snow off.  had to utilize scratchers with the 2.25" lugs. some trail riders with short tracks/lug, were complaining of hyfax smell, and overheating at the big bear. a little fluff will help a bunch. we took the Magpie River back to Dub, it was a ton better than the D. trail 6 from the badlands to Hawk on the rail bed was pretty darn good.

Hope your trip is good. Hornepayne only has one pass on the D108A from the Kabi river, north to town so, it might not be what you are used to here. that all could change with another groom, and some added snow. good luck! Ski

  14. It had been above freezing in this region since Saturday. We came up Tuesday, it was +10 in the soo. I cant speak for the soo but, Dubreuilville was plus 4-5c until about noon yesterday, with rain, and high winds. the road in town was soft and they have sanded so much, there are potholes of dirt on top of the asphalt. by 1 pm the temp was below freezing, by 5 pm it was almost -20c. right now it is -23c and everything flash froze. it was lightly snowing and blowing but, we didnt get an appreciable measured snow (basically a dusting). anything that was rutted, or had tracks will be very rough, and not much lube for sliders. Ranger lake road, is a heavily traveled road by autos, and haulers, it would have been heavily sanded. there would be no way, I would plan a route believing, I could utilize that road with what happened in the last 5 days.

It will take fresh snow, and the clubs to start working the trails again (remember, hundreds of miles of trails to fix) to get the trails back to semi decent. there is snow but, culverts, washouts, dirt, mud on trails will be a reality. towns will suck!!! this is late spring riding conditions, at this time. make your choices with that in mind. Personally I am here, with sleds in a heated garage... and I am not going to punish my equipment like that. some people will, you have to decide what you are willing to do, and live with. Ski

  15. All shoveled out in canada today, while 40+ and raining. Wasn't supposed to start snowing until after 3 or 4. Really started raining hard about noon, switched to sleet by 12:30, all snow and below freezing mark by 1:15. From 1:15pm to 4:00, dropped from about 25 to 5 degrees. It is windy as hell and almost zero Fahrenheit now at 5:00pm. 40 degree change in 5 hours, everything outside flash froze. Like a snow globe out there with the wind. No real measurable snow forecast in the immediate future. Ski
