Funny thing is sledders carried magpie for awhile then they booked up with mine and I think lumber mill has started back up too. Now only a few maybe 4 or so rooms left for sledders.

Know your role, stay in your lane. maybe ask people that know, before spewing your crap. No the mill did not open again, and it has been almost fully dismantled. Unless someone builds a complete new mill, there will be no milling operations in Dubreuilville. The rail line is closed too so, unless you truck 100% of the lumber, you cant move the lumber from town, at this time. There are rooms available at the magpie now, the mine have built several lodging complexes, for the contractors, and mine people. You truly are the definition of Fake News. Ski

  2. 95% of the time is probably stretching it, unless you are talking 4 stroke sleds built in the last 3-5 years. Then still, some (most) 2 strokes, will still be short on fuel, in many cases. I dont think our 2018 High Country 800's could make the run from wawa to chapleau with 3 extra gallons. I know it wouldnt make it from wawa or chapleau to goulais or heyden, with just 3 extra. For me, it is a been there done that, we've done it, and with the chance of an issue in there with no stop, or safety net, I just choose to avoid the area but, that is using the ole noggin, and understanding the risk management, and sled/rider limitations. It is a great area dont get me wrong but, there are better, easier, and safer access places to ride to/through. your results may vary. Ski

To make it work, you need people like the QC family mentioned, living onsite year round, wanting that lifestyle. Once you have that, then you figure out how to shorten the drive for fuel delivery, or make the roadway better, and more capable for year round delivery. But, the investment in machinery to do this plus maintenance on those machines makes it cost inefficient, for your return on the investment. Yes, many people will come to you, and sometimes be overwhelming, and remember this is all seasonal... but in reality, how much profit can you make on fuel, burgers, soup, and a place to sleep, when your power is provided by a diesel generator, that needs maintenance and replacing too? Karen and Gary at Flame Lake Lodge Had 2 diesel gennies one to run the place, and one as back up, and in the process of rebuilding, and they swapped back and forth to prolong those items. this was before they added solar, and wind power Battery systems. In the case for halfway, solar would be a bad option for 7-8 months out of the year (grey, lots of clouds). Wind wouldn't be great either considering the location in the middle of the two canyon ("mountains") Algoma, and Agawa, in a low land area.

The best thing that could happen is to hire a logging company to make the road better, & petition the power company/govt, to put a transfer station in, to get your power from the grid (they are basically below the hydro line but, cant access the power). Then buy a decent used grader, and keep the road open in the winter yourself. If you cant do that, it isnt even worth trying... It will just keep opening and closing, over and over.   Ski

I personally think that the biggest problem is staffing the place.

Been to hh a number of times.

A couple times seems more dramatic than nessary from the e staff.

    But that my observation..

Still quite a challenge.  But you took it on. Continue.  Or sell it..

No, it is getting fuel to the location, and having that fuel for the sledding riders that arrive there daily. Really, you only need a couple that works well together, and a handyman, and maybe a 4th, to make a go of it. someone to cook/serve/clean up, someone to fix things, and pump fuel, and a helper/fill in. In the hey days, there would be hundreds of sleds coming through daily on the weekends. at the time almost everyone took 10 gallons. doesnt take much to empty a 1000 gallon tank. filling a large tank with 5 gallon cans, or whatever type of storage device you could pull in on a sled, groomer etc... would take forever and be a logistical, and environmental permit nightmare. Remember Steve, Gail, and another couple (if I remember right) did it for years, just with their small group. the biggest problem is, the logistics to keep the road open, safe, and wide enough to get a fuel tanker to their location.

I am with Ox I dont think there should be any grants, bailouts, or extra funds given to a business, trying to make a profit, in this situation.

  5. From the Sault club on FB: Unfortunately, Halfway Haven has confirmed that they will not be opened for this coming season due to various challenges. The good news is they’re not going anywhere and hope to reopen for the winter season in the future. The other good news is that we along with our neighbouring Clubs to the north, Wawa Sno Riders and Chapleau Artic Watershed SC, will keep the trails open for the coming season similar to last year.

Best trip I had was with your group last year. Sticky snow and all 🙃

Thanks for the spare  mud flap ( does any sled like to reverse? ).

Yeah, I bet you had fun. LOL! Wet boots, helping dumb Americans going places with too much water, slush/overflow. wet boots, melt downs, choice words,  sweating like porn stars, wet boots... What wasnt there to like? did I mention wet boots? LOL! It was a good week to be up there though. :D  Are your sleds all ready for the next adventure? Ski

  7. there is data out there about the 2020 fires outwest alone, producing twice as much emissions and air pollutants, than all of the California's greenhouse gas reductions, combined from 2003 to 2020 we dont need more carbon help with the cars/factories... we need better forest management.

our ego's are way too high, when we think, we can control the weather. it is cyclitic, nothing more. the reason we hear about events, more is, we are in a less than 6 hour news cycle... instead of little to no news cycle, or weeks or months.

it is funny to me when you hear the WEF talk about climate, and in the same breath state " We own the science on climate change, you cant argue with our findings"... that isnt science. that is information manipulation. Ski

Does ethanol cause worse gas mileage?

Ethanol contains about one-third less energy than gasoline. So, vehicles will typically go 3% to 4% fewer miles per gallon on E10 and 4% to 5% fewer on E15 than on 100% gasoline.

I think you added a zero!

no, your math is "fuzzy". one third of 100% is 33%. so... 100% of the energy from non e, with one third less energy, is a 30% (33) loss. you can argue all you want, the math doesnt lie. and yes... they do water corn, and yes, they use water to produce ethanol while "cooking" the corn down to get the ethanol out. Better for the environment but worse for the toys.

how? 30% less fuel economy with e10, costs more to produce, not to mention the water required for corn growth, and then even more for the ethanol production. when you look at carbon output, again, you would use 30% more fuel, to produce the same mileage as non E fuels.

tell me how, it is better for the environment. raping the land for "fuel corn", pulling food for livestock, textile, and other cash crop items, from previously cash cropped fields... over and over while using harsh chemicals, and synthetic fertilizers, and GMO plants to get more production for what? an additive that messes up most fuel systems in ICE systems. yes... tell me more, how this is better for the environment.  Ski

  10. you need to protect them with a lanolin (fluid film, woolwax, surface shield), or petroleum based corrosion inhibitor yearly. they do not come from the factory "rust proof". we spend close to 100,000 on these things now, in some cases. take a few hours, and less than 100 a year, and coat everything that isnt the exhaust, and brakes. otherwise after a few years of salt, brine, beet juice on the roads, they will be a rust hole, shitty looking paperweight. 11. the tuner, and turbo crowd loves e85, higher octane, lets them bump timing/ignition curves. they are not looking for fuel economy, just horsepower.

as I said before, it will take some time but, you will see more places carrying, non E rec fuel (at a very premium price). it will take some time for those places to trickle into the canadian market but, it "should" come.

our rec fuel here is rated for at least 90 octane (out of the pump). generally a fresh batch is going into the ground tanks at 91-93. It's all I buy, all I use for all our powersports toys. dirt, street bikes, sleds, boat engines, weed whipper, chainsaw, even my 2019 tacoma, is tuned for rec fuel. it is about .80-1.00 per gallon more than regular 87 pump fuel but, the peace of mind for fuel related issues is almost zero. I dont have to add stabil, seafoam, nothing.

I had a saw I forgot about, it sat for almost 2 years with rec fuel mix in it. I shook the saw to "remix" the oil in it... it started on the 2nd or third pull, and idled. try that with eth fuel and any additive.

trailers too require a separate policy. Its cheap but sneaky on their behalf. Home owners nor auto covers them if your whole rig is stolen or destroyed. All perils is the best way to go if its affordable, no worries

why would an insurance company pay for something, they dont know you have, and havent collected a premium for insuring it? it isnt covered by your home owners, when stored, and not covered by your auto insurance just because it is hooked to your car, truck, suv, space shuttle.

think about if you were the insurance company, just for a minute. would you pay someone for their trailer, boat, sleds, atv, if you didnt know they had them, and hadn't collected a premium for the the unit on the policy, they are claiming a loss on? Didn't think so.

I am not pro big insurance, costs, or ways out of claims by any means but, you have to have some common sense and business sense, to understand this situation. Ski

FYI - flying to the US from Canada last month and there were zero mention of experimental poke compliance, but as mentioned, it seems to be hit or miss.

Canadians could always fly to the US, even during the whole covid period. ground border was and still is the issue but, as I stated some border guards are not following the ask about the vaccine status policy. it is/was totally hit or miss. imagine setting up a trip, reservations, then drive to a border crossing and get turned away. yes, it could happen. Ski

  14. still closed from canada to us (land border) for unvaxed, until midnight may 12. sad our gov't didnt follow canada's lead to open borders, especially to property owners.

some border guards were not asking about vax status on the us side but, it was a crap shoot. you could get turned away, no warning. many people rolled the dice and crossed by land and were allowed entry. sadly some were not. it was a risk you had to be willing to take.

glad that will be over for all to travel from canada to the us, land, sea, and air. border traffic for us, will have a significant uptick soon.  Ski
