Canuck
Our local clubs and the umbrella organization, OFSC, have done an amazing job developing Ontario sledding. Are there also 'watchdog' groups that support snowmobiling and/or shared trail use in general? I'm aware (from a magazine) of an American group called 'Bluewater Coalition' - a national non-profit organization dedicated to protecting responsible recreational access to public lands and waters. We want to keep your land open for use, whether you recreate on a mountain bike, snowmobile, motorcycle, personal watercraft, ATV, four-wheel drive, horse, or your hiking boots. http://www.sharetrails.org/ A common theme in the State is closures of trails, roads, camping and public access. I sense, from developments in our far North, that the same thing is occuring here. Any organizations that you're aware of? (My research has unearthed some wonderful regional initiatives: Loring/Restoul Trail Network http://trailsontario.com/loring-restoule-trail-network-four-seasons-access/ Haliburton Highlands and their efforts re: Trail Liability http://www.ontariotrails.on.ca/media/files/pdf/member-archives/reports/Trails%20Discussion%20Paper.pdf)

I found one site through Google, Puplic Access to Crown Land which might be of some interest http://crownland.org/blog/163/ontario-outdoors-recreational-alliance-oora/ There was another link to a Sled Club in BC which negotiated the right to use a huge parcel of land with a logging company. Perhaps the liability issues are less restrictive in other provinces, assuming liability is a provincial matter.
Canuck
Interesting Link CR500. Reading one of the older (2001) studies, it's interesting to note that "the Tourism Guideline Working Group" was comprised of everyone..... except tourists. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@forests/documents/document/stel02_179112.pdf Northern Ontario is an incredible place to visit and, for those lucky enough, to reside. Let's keep riding, and supporting, the northern trail associations.
