  1. We rode from kinmount to Whitney and back.   Trails were good.  Hard and crusty in morning.  But softened up towards haliburton.

Passed groomers north and south of haliburton

  2. I doubt the OFSC would get the same interest as the Hardwood ski club.  The Hardwood experience is sold to new skiers and rentals. They can accommodate the family group of new skiers for a quaint afternoon.

Short loop closed circuit without yahoos riding at break neck speed to run into.

Who do you know would pay $100 to ride in the back of a groomer on a snowmobile trail?   Most are on their sled riding if they can be.

  3. Why doesn’t the OFSC attach a online training program to the permit purchase?

have an educational video of “x” minutes stating the facts about trespassing and loss of trails.  Show some examples and the lost trail.   Maybe a map of where trails were lost and the reroutes required.

If you do not watch video your permit transaction does not go through.

Its only a thought on educating.  Might not sink in with people.  Might piss off a few or a lot but message has to get out and be heard.

  4. Was at the Forest today.  They filled their 100 sled max and we’re turning guys away.

The trails were better then we expected.  Yes they need some fresh snow.  The main trails are icy in corners. There was enough lube and cooling. Didn’t see a lot of scratchers being used.  Most of the smaller trails do not have enough snow for grooming but are passable if you can handle some humps and bumps.

We rode 160km or so.   I hit a few rocks in places. But that is expected and happens on most trails when the cool guys spin their tracks down to the dirt on every hill crest.

Overall I would go again if it remains the only riding within 3 to4 hour drive.

What was the deal w/ that? In all the years I've owned trucks, I never had 1 or was asked @ the licencing offices if I wanted 1. Registration shows the OPU code though.

Anything over 4500kg combined weight required a yearly inspection with yellow sticker dated for proof.

Tandem axle enclosed trailer also required.

it was a disputed topic many times but weigh scales in Milton told me I needed yellow stickers with F150 and 23 ft Triton.

Conservative gov has cancelled yellow stickers for private use.

People look down on those that drive trucks....interesting....

I have only drove a truck now for that last 20 or so years, could not imagine not having a truck now.

Decided to switch to an HD truck on last one I bought, went with the gas version due to the amount of towing I do, or rather do not do, I did not see the justification to spend the extra $$ up front on the diesel, but people need to understand the extra $$ you do pay upfront, you get all or most back on resale, and if you happen to buy a Dodge when they offer the special where you do not pay extra for the diesel, that is a win/win when selling.

So far very happy with the HD, other than the higher costs to sticker it, brakes, etc....but nothing to complain about, especially when you use it to tow or load the bed full or materials....payload is so much better.

As for towing, narrower v-nose trailer will always be easier to tow, or an open trailer if you are really concerned about your MPG. I recall switching from an open car trailer to an enclosed car trailer years ago that did not have much weight difference between the two and it was night and day towing the two.

No more stickers for personal use. Win win with HD diesel.

Other than to say they've got a Cummins or Dmax...

That’s the good thing about vehicles.  People can buy and drive what pleases them.  Personally I would buy a 2500 Diesel truck long before I buy a corvette or Mustang.  Waste of money to say I have it?

i know one thing, in all the years I have owned a pickup I have had way more friends ask to borrow my trucks then the guys who own corvettes and mustangs. Go figure!!

Check the link I provided earlier on this topic page.

Interesting that in the link it shows only 155,000 registered in Ontario.  Lower then anticipated by many.

The source of this number is International Snowmobile Manufacturers.  I wonder if this number is same as MTO registrations or is an estimate by manufacturers association?

Actually there is shortage of Marinas in Ontario. The ones that are closing are due to external pressures that are mostly caused by regulations from the various governments.Try to find a slip in some parts of the province and you'll find yourself on a waiting list.Your antidotal   evidence of boats traveling might be correct, fuel prices and peoples time has limited the scope in which they travel. The 3 major dock builders in my area are always busy as are the people that build storage sheds. No decline here.

Could be busier on Severn side.  I have edited my post previous as we are on Trent side east of Simcoe.  No where near the boats going through on a long weekend.

Do you have a boat? Do you use either the Trent system or the Rideau? You heavily subsidize the operation of those although many boat owners will never use it and it is very widely used by people who can afford boats worth $100K and much more.

How many boats buy lock passes yearly?

I would bet the number is in decline.

I watch from our cottage over the years and notice a huge drop in boats travelling the system East of Simcoe on the Trent Marinas have closed.

Kinda like sledding numbers will be in decline.

  11.

I track every tank in my 2017 Ram 1500 Sport with 5.7.  My best tanks ever were 11.31 l/100km.  Driving from Toronto to Kirkland Lake to Ottawa to Montreal and then back to Milton. And 11.95l/100km.   Lifetime average of 14.25l/100km. Based on Roadtrip app and almost every fill up recorded.  I missed one or two.

I have almost every fill up recorded for last 8 years on my trucks.  I do it for business write off.

While it’s great to say I got 9l/100kms on a trip once over the life of truck it’s not true especially if we are talking overall operating cost of vehicle.  If you are averaging 16 city and once got 9 your true l/100kms operating cost will be much higher.  Like 14 or 15 depending on you city/highway km ratio.  Calculating operating cost needs all km accounted for not your best day.

the diesel fuel costs more plus the higher price of the diesel engine option in the purchase means you need to drive a lot to get a ROI or break even.

Sorry 02. Not sure of your numbers.

Factor in the higher resale at the end of the deal also.  People look at a diesel with 100,000kms different then a gas truck.

I bought a 1500 ram with hemi only because the US EPA had stopped Ram from shipping diesels for 8 months.  I wish I had the diesel.

Look at fuel economy numbers from Fuelly.com.

Guys are reporting mileage with 3.0 diesel Ram.  10 - 11 l/100km vs 14-16 l/100km with the hemi motor.

and compare your 3.5v6 Ford F-150 at 14 l/100 km.

25 - 30% increase in fuel economy.  Then throw in towing a trailer and watch the savings change even more

First off, the title of this thread strikes me as an oxymoron.

That was my experience with my diesel.  I simply didn't use it enough to make up for the high maintenance costs.

There is also a big difference between the 2500/3500 diesels and the new 1500 class diesels.

I am hearing some pretty good MPG numbers pulling and empty.   Way better economy then a 2500/3500 when empty.

And pretty good numbers when towing.

A few years ago I had some documentation that showed what the MTO had for info. It pretty much put to rest the validity of the 300,000 sleds stat. I'm thinking it was around the time the OFSC was selling over 100,000 permits. We felt it a stretch that there were 200,000 registered & 'active' sleds in the province that weren't used on groomed trails.

Any idea how many people buy the fishing only outdoors card? That would give an idea of the number ice fisherman who could have a snowmobile.

Sorry but I do not understand the reference to the Fishing only outdoor card.    Anyone who buys any type of outdoor card can ice fish.

Hunters ice fish as do sport license card holders and conservation card holders.

I meant keeping things the same in the north as they are now. No mandatory payment of trail pass fees when registering their sleds...unless they're running the OFSC trails.

In the south, force every registered sled to pay for an OFSC trail permit.....but as Zoso pointed out, how could we justify charging trail fees for owners living where trails seldom open....

I guess there's no easy solution.

Do they pay for Val tags in the north?

  16. Now if there was a group insurance included in with the Val tag and trail pass there might be a way to grab more sales.

There are many threads discussing high insurance prices.   If liability was included with permit and add on a Val tag would it work?

Its a no win situation for someone always.

  17. Why does a guy who does not ride a groomed trail ever have to pay for trail grooming?

And there are many of those guys out there.  See lake Simcoe or Lake Nipissing in January to March.

Yes there are are guys that ride groomed trails with out a permit who ice fish.

And lots of guys who ride groomed trails without a permit and do not ice fish.

This is an old argument and been had many times over.

I think all val tags on snowmobiles should include a fishing license.  No trail permit required.  there are as many or more snowmobiles used for ice fishing then trail riding and many people do not buy fishing licenses but fish.

Maybe include a fishing license and trail permit then all happy?

More babbling on CHEX about the high frequency train service thru Ptbo being a 'priority' in the Minister of Transport's mandate letter.

    https://globalnews.ca/video/6308719/via-rail-high-frequency-line-through-peterborough-a-priority-for-feds/

4.3 Billion to cut 25% travel time between Ottawa & Toronto. The project will result in relaying track on the abandoned railbed between Havelock & Glen Tay. It will be interesting to see how the route deals w/ Tweed. My only riding there takes a sledder thru a lumber yard...

The Window Washer says it will be great for Havelock. I doubt Havelock will get a stop. In years past VIA's Turbo & Rapido trains only stopped @ Guildwood & Dorval (IIRC). This isn't going to be a 'milk run'...

A priority that will require significant engineering and environmental impact studies.  Plus the whole route will need to be upgraded for higher speed trains.  And don’t forget the overpasses that will need to be built.

This is a dream at best for the Liberals.

My permits arrived a couple weeks ago.

Wife was kind enough to put them someplace safe, so safe she cant remember where.

    Guess I'm house cleaning !!

Maybe your wife is extra smart?

Now you have to house clean rather then sled wax and tunnel polish.

Acton Chimo - the Acton company was bought out a couple of years ago by another outfit - the Chimos are still for sale, but made in China - previously in Quebec.

Go to this link and scroll down a ways:

    https://shoeking.ca/c0006.html

Wide variety at Shoe King - they have a store in Hamilton on Barton - web address and product selection. Anything that pricey I would be wanting to inspect before purchase:

    https://shoeking.ca/index.html

With the Chimos...you realize that you are committing a serious fashion faux pas....white footwear should never be worn after Labour Day.

Before switching to boots without removable liners I used Acton Prarie.  They were very popular with a lot of the ice fishing guys I knew. In wet slushy conditions all the time and warm feet.

Acton Explorer was also very good boot.  It was a little firmer rubber then the Prarie.
