In this state of emergency, there is a stay at home order for the exception of going to an essential job, grocery store, pharmacy etc...   Tough to prove that you are doing any of that in New Liskeard with a 24ft sled trailer on the back when you live in Waterloo.     You will be in contravention of the Order.

Thank you, was curious what the charge/fine would be for that.

Easy pickings for the OPP on the highway - but pretty hard for them to pull over every car on the road.

    Cheers,

Looking on Kijiji this morning and in first 2 pages of adds there was 7 or 8 brand new long track deep paddle machines advertised from one Artic Cat dealer alone.

Probably all they have left to sell - forced to take units.

In any event, the issue the hobby faces is that it needs youth and new riders to sustain itself, young riders are not necessarily sold on flat land, 50 km/hr limited trail riding only when they are investing 10-20k on toys that they want to ride.

Its a tough situation and there is no easy solution.

In a perfect world, kids would be interested in groomed trail riding only, but I just don't think that is realistic.

I watched Snowmobiler TV last night - 20 minutes was dedicated to back country riding in Quebec, which looked fantastic btw! :)

Quite the contrary I believe. The police didn't want anyone else doing their job so STOP was disbanded. As for the decimation of trail patrol, I don't know if the MTO had a part in pressuring the OFSC to gut it or if it was a board decision at the OFSC. Whichever it was, that decision was a very bad one for the future of this sport in Ontario. JMHO

OPP I am sure wanted to add this to their insanely bloated budgets to download onto the public, use our money to buy nice fancy equipment and write some tickets to generate revenue. STOP was great the way it was and did what it needed to do.

It has to be more than 20 years old. I stayed there in 2004 and it was a mess then. Cracks in the block walls, no heat in some of the rooms, the advertised hot tub hadn't worked in ages. etc.

We should be thankful of the fact that anyone is willing to make a go of earning an actual living running a place in Cochrane for people to stay......without their insanity, we could not fulfil our own.

  6. Sounds like a great trip, when sledding, I could care less where I stay, need a little heat and a roof, the rest is whatever.

my son will be licensed by November 2021 and he is already planning our first trip.

I have stayed in the Chimo several times and it's what you would expect, Cochrane is hardly a high rollers destination spot lol

Thanks for this post to remind to me to go back in the garage and add some silicon around the belly pan clutch area on the current bush/kids sled I have.  Looked at that two hours ago.   Water on the primary clutch is never good, even with just top water on the lakes.

Been in the water in the dark with 3 other buddies.. prefer not to go back.  Grew up on lakes west of Sudbury.. so sooner or later we pushed our luck too far.. but luckily no lives lost and knowledge gained.

The frozen seat was a kind reminder every morning left on the previously sunk sled. ( 92 Indy 440 ) .. near impossible to get all the moisture out.

Yup, my buddy tried everything and eventually said frig it and bought a new seat.

I suspect the OFSC staff worked very hard with MTO and other ministries to persuade the govt that snowmobiling not be included with the ski hills. I think they argued that snowmobilers as a group are a responsible lot and would respect the self imposed travel limits. If we don’t, the govt will move to put snowmobiling in the non essential category and we will be forced to close  all trails again. We also need to say a prayer that no outbreaks are attributable to snowmobilers travelling outside their home PHU. Would be just another reason to close trails.

No lift lines either, sledding can be very solitary, even in groups

Perhaps....at least you and Blake might have lowered my blood pressure with your optimistic outlook on the situation..

I would have a hard time believing they would do anything to close the trails voluntarily and did everything they could to allow trails to open, the weather is still the biggest hurdle.

if you have snow and trails, go ride, be happy

Unfortunately it would become known to others and suddenly every landowner would want the same free permit or permits or something else of equivalent value if they weren't snowmobilers. I could be mistaken but I believe there are other legal implications particularly regarding liability and the insurance as soon as the landowner accepts payment for the trail crossing their property. I believe it opens the landowner to increased liability.

I read you don't need to renew until" further notice" from MTO....am I wrong?

The way I read it as well. My wife's drivers licence expired in May and we have received nothing to date.

It is not that he can't afford a pass, I believe it is the principle of the deal, he gives the OFSC the right to use his property each year and in exchange he gets nothing in return except frustration. I am sure many land owners feel that way. He does get some satisfaction from knowing that he is contributing to the local economy but that is about it. The local club use to run an event as a  thank you to land owners , but I understand it was not well attended. Time will tell, I see that the local club has been out surveying the summer damage and packing the trails the last few days so that is great news, just hope the "entitled" don't start running the closed trails.

I totally get it, and actually think landowners should get a pass, all I am saying is there is another way to skin the cat, quietly purchase the pass for him as a group and give it to him, nobody needs to know the how or whys.

I definitely feel for the landowners, my neighbor owns the 2300 acres which D trail passes through (which is the only trail north from Bracebridge) , without that trail being open would mean the end of snowmobiling in the area. Each year he is surprised and annoyed that the OFSC won't give him a season pass as a thank you gesture, one day he will just say F you and that will be it. I realize there is most likely a legal problem with a trail pass "gift" for landowners and where do you stop. I have talked to the local club and their hands are tied when it comes to gifting passes. That will be the year that I personally buy him a permit for his work snowmobile  and hopefully he will change his mind. He gets pissed when he see's what people do to his land, leaving garbage, going off trail, noise and breaking down his gates. Back in 2016 he was one of many land owners that revoked rights due to the misunderstanding of the provincial trail's act changes so he will do it again regretfully, despite what the it means to snowmobiling and the economic impact to Bracebridge.  We were lucky to get the trail back in 2017. Each year I buy him a big bottle of his favorite  as a thank you for being a great neighbor and fellow snowmobiler.

Is there any particular reason people can't just toss him $50.00 bucks each and let him buy it?

Who needs to know where the "cash" came from?

There's only one problem with all of this the whole province is in lock down so how can you not travel from one health you to another when we're all supposed to be locked down it makes zero sense right now

Well, you can - its "recommended" and only recommended not too for anything that is not "essential".

PHU's are making their own rules - their not laws.

This whole thing is beyond stupid at this point.

There are a total of 0 km's of trails in my public health unit - not 0 available - 0 period - I have NO CHOICE but to leave my PHU to go riding and if that is what I have to do, then so be it, I consider it "essential" for my friging mental health.

Dorset-used to be a guy there with tanks that charged $50 to hook your ski so it could be hauled out!

If you watch the video of me and my buddy, I am going first, in the first 10 seconds you can see the divers equipment at the edge and the diver walking up as I am coming onto the water. I think at that point of the day, there was already 2 or 3 sleds down lol
