Ahhh, agreed, but i said that they are "not getting rich" off it.  Of course they're making money and what's wrong with that? Of course, you can always choose not to go ;)

The thing that got me was the way the fella with a broken sled was treated, the interaction with the very people that support the business. Couple that with inconstant price for fuel, then putting a minimum charge for fuel. There is allot more to the scenario, including the way the Polar Bear Riders where treated. In short, they are not the type of people that are good for the sport.

PBR really should consider just shutting that trail down next year.    Truthfully, with the Base Camp hassles and the hydro work/logging that took place on both the east and west side this year, the trail was actually one of the roughest trails up there this year.

I said that earlier this year, these idiots are toxic. Some believe it would hurt the area not having this trail. I personally don't believe so and it would free up valuable resources and allow grooming operations to concentrate on the rest of their system, which is needed with the influx of traffic due to southern conditions and shorter seasons.

It wasn't this year-he was far from timid!

I mean if you where stopped and he was walking up the trail, he probably would have stopped long before he got to you. I can see him being pissed when you ride by though. Not to many people get to see them that close. A friend of mine walked out of a cabin and there was 1 standing around 30y from him, he just stopped and looked at it and it bolted,

That's probably why you encountered the wolf, that's allot of snow to try and maneuver in. Probably wouldn't   bother with you if stopped, they are very timid. I have tried to get close to them, never had any luck. Beautiful animal.

I have never been to Base Camp.  Been to Cochrane a couple times now.

I have no problem supporting a small business that is run smartly.  Hell I would be happy to donate cash to the place.

But based on what I have read and $6/litre gas forget it.  I will never make the trip!

I agree, and I don't expect them to justify the price of fuel to me or anyone else, I have just had a real hard time getting my head wrapped around it. When I saw the price of fuel in Moosenee. I was actually shocked, I was expecting it to be more, considered it gets there by rail, has to be unloaded and I assume be trucked to the fuel station. It also doesn't carry as much tax as I believe it is a reservation.  Really the only one that has to justify the price is the customer, and that isn't me and it looks like many do justify it, and that is great. It keeps a loop open and it is well used, and really thats all that matters. Sometimes I get a little analytical.

Had a wolf just N. of Temiscamingue Que. jump off trail/bare it's fangs @ us as we passed then jump back on trail after last rider past. We all wondered what would happen if you broke down/ran out of gas & he came along!

    How deep is the snow?

the problem lies in the distance between Missanabi, and Chapleau. if I remember right, it is 90 miles one way (and was not that rugged of terrain). and Chapleau, hated to groom their side. getting operators, to run the whole thing was tough, due to the distance alone. the last year or 2 they put a groomer at Ernie's in Missanabi, to cut the distance, and Kenny (ernie's son) was going out, and doing their end, and did a great job but, in the end, from what I hear, the owner of Aux Trois Moulin's motel, (and the club president of chapleau at the time), put up a tremendous fuss, to get that trail closed, so he could get the trail from halfway opened, and the old F trail closed, to get more touring riders from the soo into his community, via the trail. Politics, involved hurting the sport in that region, yet again. the old F trail from Black creek/Aubrey falls, to Flame lake lodge, was pretty rugged but, fairly close to the paved hwy 129. from flame lake to chapleau via trail was either 50 or 60 miles. then to black creek was another 50 or so. one way it was 110 miles, or more and again, a tough sell to a volunteer groomer, not getting paid, with their own family, and full time job or business to tend to as well. Ski

if I remember correctly that groomer at Ernie's was an old ts115 and it had lots of issues that made keeping it operational problematic. It doesn't matter if it is d or f trail, grooming is the issue. If Ernie is open for fuel, F is more reasonable from a fuel standpoint. It seems like things are going backwards from a progression standpoint in this area, I remember there being positive speculation on what the F trail extension would be for a reliable trail to complete the loop. I believe that is when Steve and Gail where wanting to slow down at half way and it looked good till Roger started acting up. I only rode the trail once but it was a beautiful ride.

  8. gas went from $ 2.58 more per liter to $4.28 more per liter than premium in Cochrane. Logistics is an issue, profit isn't a dirty word, but that makes no sense. If this is what it takes to be profitable up there, I would call it unachievable. I would not be able to look anyone in the eye.  I do not have a very good impression from this punk, just from his social media interaction. Glad I frequented that trail and loop in the past, I don't think I will be up there again unless I pack my own fuel n viddles.

it was a suggestion, that the clubs and ofsc should get a monetary guarantee from halfway, if the trail is being brought to them, they are responsible for the groomer fuel bill, if the business closes, during the grooming season. the ofsc, and clubs cant keep maintaining that section of trail, for that one business, without a guarantee, they will be there to provide food, shelter, fuel service for the groomer, and the sledders.

and for those that think you can make it with a can or two, of fuel... maybe when it is groomed but, with no grooming and 4-6 feet of snow in there... no, you are not going to do that!

the liability for the ofsc for the distance, weather, terrain, shelter, fuel, and services, for the average sledder (not the hard core explorers), is too much to take on for any entity.

forget halfway, re-open up the trail from Misanabbi, to Chapleau, re connect the Big loop from there. leave the roads, hydro line, from south of wawa, to searchmont to the off trailers. people in the states can still start in the Soo, you just have to head east to elliot lake, then to sudbury,  to go north. Ski

Huge money was spent on that trail, it should have never closed, that is the one that should be focused on. There are complications with groomers, it is not an easy task either. I believe that's why it was so easily abandoned in the first place.

  10. I saw a pic of that grader not to long ago with the hind end stuck in the ditch, and a post on FF thanking a bunch of guys for getting repairs done on it. I couldn't imagine freezing my bits off in -30 weather bucking huge drifts and the amount of snow they have, in that pos. I have run one of those things around my buddies farm in the summer, it was fun, I wouldn't even kick a tire on it if there was frost, it is in about the same shape as that thing.

  11. Nice trail, a bit tight and twisty in spots, really opens up beyond Latchford. Almost every time I have been through there they had groomer troubles and it was rough. Not saying it's always that way, was just my luck.

  12. I certainly understand what you are going through, don't blame you one bit if you do pack it in.  For those of you that think it is a few bad apples, you need to stuff your ass in a groomer for a day, it is not a few, its a ton. When your going 8mph and everyone is doing 80 plus, you get to see allot, its not a couple outside the stakes, it's a ton, do I have a number, no, it's just not a few. The one that got me the most was non permitted sleds, that coupled with the lack of snow in my area, it just became a waste of time that drove me nuts and was time away from my family. This sport has had this problem with the ridership that has been unraveling at the seams, the more it unravels, the faster it goes. There was a deal made with the devil years ago (MTO) . I forget the bill and the particulars, but it was not favorable for the sport, it has been rearing it's ugly head for years, and now it's picking up speed.

With a bigger ridership, the small problems become  much larger, that is where it is today, I don't see a turning of the tides, a resurrection or anything of the sort, it is a self entitled me world and this problem is so much larger then almost anybody will admit. Saying it's just a few is the biggest understatement I have heard about this situation.

The trails been 'open' for a while.  Basecamp owners have been the biggest issue, always have been since they took over from Bill Froud. Hats off to both PBR Riders and Arctic Riders clubs and volunteers for working tiressly each season to get that loop open. After the Basecamps attitude and social media posts this year, they deserve no customers.

if i was on either one of those clubs executive, I would make a motion to close that trail. That business relies solely on a volunteer club to run both ventures, base camp and extreme. The way they treat those two clubs is ridiculous. With the amount of traffic they are seeing in recent years their efforts would be far more valuable looking after the rest of their trail system with more frequent grooming possible without wasting resources on those fools. That loop does not make or break those clubs.

While I agree with most of what you said, I do not think that the District should be making decisions for club issues. The district might want to help to get the 2 clubs and the Base Camp together to hammer the issue out but the clubs have the boots on the ground and should be making the decisions that affect them in terms of their trail sections. The 2 clubs involved have done pretty well at making decisions over the years and should be allowed to do so now. JMHO

An issue with a cowboy like this would be better handled with the district, at that point the 2 club presidents, the district president, the district governor and if they have a district trail committee would all have input and be on the same page, it also helps take pressure off the 2 clubs. This clearly runs pretty deep and there are other issues with logging and hydro work that are causing part of this. JMO but that's the way I would deal with this one.

  15. That is the problem, this should go to the district and make a decision. Once I realized the ownership had changed it shed a different light on what is going on. This is a business that is relying on a volunteer system to run his business. I would be curious to know if he did in fact shell the funds he says he has. Seems pretty odd.

nothing like burning down your own fort. WTF? there are better ways to get things done. people like this, make me want to avoid them, at all costs. Ski

Go to extreme tours and read his  "our story" , it all adds up and paints a glorious picture of who he is and his future, if he continues down this slippery slope. I can read clearly between the lines and I can see the trouble, feel bad for these two clubs and d15. This is a perfect example of why volunteers, un volunteer.

Again, I feel bad for the PBR Riders Volunteers and the club.  Basecamp needs to burn down, and get new owners.  PERIOD. It's  been a complete joke ever since Bill Froud Sold it...

So I was wondering about all this when I saw the crap on facefu@@. Did Bill sell the base camp and extreme tours as well? or just base camp? It is a shame, it was all an amazing product for years.
