AH BUT, you REALLY get to explore an area and find some really nice honey holes close to home, too. from dub to mani is less than 90 minutes... we can still go over an ride there, no rule saying you cant just because you own a place somewhere's else. ;) one thing we have going for us... no more hauling gear, sleds trailer up weekend, and week out. so much quicker for trips. made it home last night in 7 hours. the last 200 miles in a snow event. hard to do that hauling a trailer. Ski

  2. yes, in places the magpie will have 3 feet of ice, a 3-5 FOOT air gap, then the water. right now the water level has dropped over 5 feet from our first december rides down the magpie. the river changes almost daily between, feb 10th through ice out. river level may drop over 10 feet overall, from where it froze. if you dont know, DONT GO! Ox, call Dan Kelly at sled north vacation home rental, in Mani... better off staying there, than the hotel. he will have the skinny on what is available to ride or not (he maintains the road system up there. the hydro corridors to marathon, and hornepayne will be tracked close to town but, most stay REALLY CLOSE TO TOWN, AND NEVER VENTURE OUT.  there is A LOT of logging going on so, most roads are plowed but, i have some honey holes up there that are awesome. some bush wackin to be had for shizzy. miss riding over there, since we bought our place in dub.     It may need to be more in line with California's CARB - where a manufacturer needs to produce their product to testing and get a variance number.

     

     

    Some of y'all may recall the issue of Hot Rod about 35years ago when the title of the main article was "Can they outlaw Hot Rodding?"

    It was in response to the CARB, and that it wasn't likely that hardly anyone would $pend the $ to git clearance.

    35 yrs later, and it seems that - yes - many ARE getting their CARB numbers.

     

     

    from michigan but, this is the test used in the states... the muffler on a snowmobile must be in good working order and, when in constant operation, noise emission cannot exceed 88 decibels at 13.1 feet, as measured using the 2004 Society of Automotive Engineers standard J2567 for a stationary snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1980.

     

    it is measured with the db reader (sound listening device, not a DYNO), it is measured for several seconds at or above 4000 rpms. SOME brap cans will pass 88 db at idle but, even stock ones fail at 4000 rpms at 13.1 feet. IT IS A STRICT TEST. and testers are reasonable, in costs. 

     

    everyone can agree getting control of the noise is our goal but, everyone should also support a better system than just, NO MODIFIED EXHAUSTS. technically if you were to get a power tripping cop... you painted your rusty stock pipe, polished your heat shields on the pipe or muffler... HERE IS YOUR TICKET, FOR MODIFYING YOUR EXHAUST. food for more thought in the summer, the db limit for atv's and dirt bikes for trail and tracks is 104db (which is LOUD). 88 db is acceptable and achievable.

     

    i would bet anyone here, if i didnt say a word, you would have no idea, i have a can on my sled, and you wouldnt ask me to open my hood, or have "the talk" with me about how loud my sled is. i understand i am in the minority but, we need to stop painting with those broad brushes. there are acceptable alternatives.     I also agree that the pipes are too loud and annoying. The C trail goes right through the back of our property and when someone goes by in the middle of the night with a huge braaap it sucks.

    this is the EXACT SCENARIO, for needing a DB limit, and testing, than to just use an antiquated law, that says, no modifications to exhaust systems. dont get me wrong, i am not a fan of the loud braaaaap cans AT ALL BUT, there NEEDS TO BE a procedure, and test to determine if the exhaust is too loud. join our decade, and our technology. get a test. 88 db or less. make the aftermarket, AND the oem comply. that is FAIR. right now it is the wild west, and the law enforcement agencies decide for us, who and what should be looked at, with only the "WE THINK IT IS TOO LOUD, OPEN YOUR HOOD".   6. there are many good day loops, riding to be had around dub. one of the favorites is: dub to hawk via the magpie, magpie to trail 6, to hawk junction for burgers at the big bear, hawk back to dub on the D trailside trip on the F trail to dog lake and ernies (call ahead, if you want food, or fuel).     Ranger lake road (556) is NOT paved. it is a very well maintained gravel road, similar to the sultan road between chapleau, and sudbury. catch it right (on a sled) and it is nice, catch it after a warm up, or long period of no snow, and it isnt pleasant at all. Ski

    Thanks Ski. That is kinda what I thought was the case. Certainly too much work for one club based in Chapleau. I miss that 'Rugged Ass Terrain' on the original C101D to Folyet. Sure separated the diehards from the rest. Some of our group are still riding after a few passes thru there, but a few packed it in after a couple of exposures. I guess they curl or watch TV now in the winter. Miss Ernie's, the long cold run up Dog Lake, and a lodge near the tracks, I believe south or west of Missanabie, operated by a couple that were 80 (him, and we celebrated his 80th with them) and quite a bite closer to 60 (her). It was a fishing/hunting lodge in the non-sledding seasons, and IIRC, the groomer operated out of their property. They were great people, as are many in the north.

     

    GTC, Sorry. I just realized that I hijacked your thread for my own trip down memory lane in a part of the world that I really admire, and consequently miss. If anyone backs out on your trip at the last minute and you want a replacement, let me know.

     

    that was Open Season, Sometimes Sno'd Inn, in Localsh. now it is known as wabatong lodge. it was closed in 2004, then in 2009 the son (Sean) opened it back up. interesting story and history in Localsh at wabatonglodge.com. they are just accross dog lake, and northwest a tiny bit of trail, access road. the trail bypasses the town now but, the wife and i actually rode in there last week, searching for new (old) routes, for more excursions, and adventures.  i have a dream of putting my foot in lake superior, then riding to James bay, and standing on the ice, replicating older trapper, dogsled travels, of the region. who's in?   10. chapleau had the chore of maintaining that trail. they had approx 110 miles one way to aubrey falls, in RUGGED ASS TERRAIN, 90 miles to foleyet, and 90 miles to missanabi. for the small group and town they had done a great job of keeping these links open, for loop riding. after the downturn in the economy and volunteer burnout, they just couldnt keep it up, any longer. fighting logging and reroutes, poor weather etc... the club shut down for a year or so, to regroup. now they just maintain the 60 miles to halfway haven, and the route to foleyet. still a big chunk of mileage but, a lot smaller area than previously. unfortunately with this downsizing, places like flame lake lodge,  ernies in missanabi, and many others, were cut out of the trail system, and winter commerce.   we really miss some of those businesses, and people.   11. Brian, is a good guy, just offering a touring guide service including, carrying your luggage, spares, tools with a chase vehicle. that is very appealing to some people worried about breaking down, finding a way to retrieve their sled in a mishap, far away from home. 

     

    with that said... if you can read a map, or have internet access, you can plan a trip with friends, or like minded individuals from online groups, without the added fees but, a crap shoot on finding personalities you jive with (still an issue using the guide service). 

     

    we used to "adopt" people in hotel/motel lots the mornings,  we were leaving for a destination, on a regular basis. i guided and planned many loop trips from dootalk, totallyamaha.com, hardcoresledder, snowest, here etc... met A LOT of great friends, and lasting friendships, had some great times. 

     

    in the end, do you want to plan and execute your vacation, or just show up, and follow someone each day? that is a question, only you can answer.   but, again... brian is a good guy, and very good at his job. Ski

  12. i can remember hopping them water holes, early season on the F trail between ranger lake road and flame lake lodge. really miss seeing Karen, Gary, and Maureen. (she makes some of the best red cabbage, i have ever had). too bad the new trails and re-routes, couldnt have included them for commerce. they gave a lot to that trail, and the clubs associated with the trail. 

     

    still one of my all time favorite trails, and destination's.  glad i was able to have my wife, daughter, and many friends enjoy it with me, while it was a viable entity. Ski

  13. every situation is different. that vintage doo, and it's known motor issues, early season, prior season storage and prep... give the guy a daily rental fee, and let him use that money toward fixing it. dumping the entire grenading motor rebuild cost to the borrower, just isnt fair. what if they just swapped sleds for a few minutes in the trail, does the borrower pay for the motor? i think not. couple hundo's per day while in use, that is all that is owed, and still cheaper than renting from a business.

     

    with that said, it generally is: you borrow it, your break it, you now own it, or pay for it to be fixed back to pre-borrowed status. (or dont ask to borrow it in the first place. Ski

  14. most rated 18' trailers are actually 18 feet of box space, with a 4-5' V front, for the front ramp door, (so think 22-23' of enclosed trailer space). make sure to look at specs BEFORE PURCHASE, all mfgr's list specs different. one 16-18' trailer is not the same as the next. your best bet is to find the trailer you want, tape out that dimension on the floor of garage or driveway, then "load your sleds" into the taped space to see how easy, or how hard it is. if you dont, you may be in for a rude awakening upon your maiden voyage with the new hauler. your results may vary.
