Somebody in "risk management" drew attention to existing agreements apparently. HO blames the clubs, and vice versa.

One trail here wanted OFSC to provide year round insurance to gain access that had been granted for YEARS. Why not? Nobody else pay for access, or does anything to maintain things.

Volunteers with tons of hours in and other people treated like mushrooms are venting.

I believe that the issue is some wanting snowmobiling to pay all costs for every free rider user

Nope.  Every club has it's own agreement (same one from the mto in theory).  In recent years it's went to a district agreement between the district and mto, but still seperate for every area.  The MTO signs off on every crossing and they have a spec you have to meet for sightlines, etc.  Each district deals with their local MTO field office.  Who knows what's going on here.  I'm only speculating.

D10 has one agreement and a great working relationship with the MTO

We try to get friends and family to join the sport, but it's better to bring them to the trail and give them a couple rides on your sled with your guidance. If they like snowmobiling, then they can purchase a sled and you have a riding buddy. The present winter conditions would not encourage anyone to purchase a sled for the first time as it would seem like wasted money. This is an expensive sport to get into but expenses smooth out as the years go by.

    1. Lending a snowmobile might be a breach of Insurance Policy and if an accident occurs and the borrowed sled crashes into a paid up and insured snowmobiler who is out enjoying the day ... then who is responsible? The person that borrowed the snowmobile or the Owner who has the insurance in his/her name?

    2. If you have to borrow a snowmobile to have your fun .... then you cannot afford the sport and shouldn't be borrowing from friend or family.

    3. If you rent a snowmobile and it grenades ..... I'm sure you have to pay the costs for the repair in full. ( Was hoping WB would have some input)

It's my opinion that the borrower should stand the cost of the repairs.

Bottom line is... don't lend your $20,000 snowmobile, I'm sure if the borrower asked you for the same amount in cash that you would think twice.

Cheers and it's just my opinion guys.

With our rentals the renter is only responsible for damages that they cause. Engine failure unless they cause it would be our problem. That has never happened but I would not hold the renter responsible for a mechanical failure of any type

Your wife and possibly yourself will hate the stink of 2 stroke oil on your clothes and in your nose. Keep a lookout for a skidoo touring machine with a 600ace 4 stroke motor with fairly low kilometers, although well cared for, 13,000 or so would not be unreasonable. Bulletproof and low maintainance, 380 to 400 kilometers per tank of fuel.

Some of us like that smell. Welcome to the sport lots of good advice here maybe find a local that can break the trail and check the ice for you. Often a couple of bucks to the right local means a set off eyes that you trust watching your cottage. Floater suits on sale from 229.95 taxes in btw

Bought the sled from unlimited snowmobile in varney, very easy to deal with, and great guys to chat to.

The real story is that the new owner is ex (?) Hells Angels with a first degree murder conviction under his belt. He thought he could register the liquor licence under the name of the bar manager since he could not get one with the conviction. Not sure what happened but the AGCO found out and pulled the licence. There was some bs on Facebook about renovations etc but that is the real story. It’s up for sale now and the heat has been turned off so there is frost visible in the windows. I heard it was in foreclosure now which would not surprise me. I hope someone steals it and puts a bit of money into it. Every community, even the tiny ones need a place to gather. Shame.

The heat being off will be the end of it

I keep thinking about the Jolly Roger.  Makes for a pretty inexpensive holiday when you can stay for about $100/ night and includes breakfast.  I see lots of negative reviews lately, however would like to give the new owners a chance.

Not sure what else to do though besides sledding if we did stay there.

New owners there things are getting better Tappattoo is great

Whole idea of self insuring is to hold money in trust until needed. It would take time to do it no doubt. Ofsc should be way farther ahead once reserves got built up though. Maybe a portion of self insurance and a portion of regular insurance would work, to build necessary reserves and cover risks. Powers in numbers and maybe we could eventually join atv riders to self ensure too. Anything is possible. Have to think outside box to survive today.

We are self insured to a limit. As for the atvs those guys cannot even get along with each other. I am not saying that it will never happen but the entitlement and kingdom building that is (dis)organized atving has to stop first and atvers will have to understand that all trails are not available

Now you can buy 8 days total( 4, 2 day permits) before you  Hit cost of a full season permit. Early permit is a great deal and I always take advantage of it. But with no snow around here better to wait and see before shelling out 270 dollars, that is all, especially since you can buy online and ride right away. I would be in favour of a two year permit if it ever gets tied to Val tags, just like license on cars. Then ofsc could plan farther ahead and count on funds and do an investment ahead of time to grow funds during off season.

This will be the final solution to so many problems from permit enforcability to final cost as long as a solution can be found to the ever looming insurance nightmare that is not just the sport of sledding but ontario in general

Buying multi-day permits in lieu of a full season permit is a personal choice and IMHO should be kept a personal choice. There won't be any trails if a large percentage of permit buyers switch to multi-day permits.

If you end up buy 3 different day permits over the season, you have spent more money than buying an early permit.

If you are not going to ride at least three times you are better off renting imho

  12. We tow a lot. Two hummin cummins no issues ever engine wise over a hundred dollars.  I get better fuel economy towing a 10000 lb boat than a certain buddy of mines Yota 5.7 . Truck starts everyday no matter how cold it is gets better traction in the slippery crap because of the heavy engine and easily lasts half a million working kms and 20 years. No regrets ever. We also own two Hemis that do not tow as much love these trucks they are very good on gas tow well when needed however they have the ability to beat up your drivers license they are rockets. Too each their own your bucks your say we have it both ways no regrets. As for the def fluid mine are older and do not need it future tier 5 Diesels will not need it either I am told.
