Sksman, posted this on FB a couple of weeks ago. This is probably what you saw.

Instead of hand signals there is a light system available for snowmobiles from theridelite.com.There are 2 coloured led lights. Yellow- rider approaching. Green- End of group or Rider alone. No more hands off the bars it the turns. And every Yellow light would signal a new group for those cases were a rider is signalling last rider when in fact another group has caught up.

Edit: also check www.yamaheater.com for the RAD light. Similar idea but less expensive.

I have built my own versions of these since about 2006.  I now have the ones from yamaheater.com on all three of our sleds.  BTW, they do not flash as a flashing green light is reserved for volunteer firefighters.

With nothing to do because of mandatory closings, everyone should try to get north at least once more, for your own sanity and to support the northern economy. Snow conditions were still very good on Saturday from Wawa/Chapleau north. Our April dirt bike trip to West Virginia is off, so I think I can justify another trip north.

    Trails around Kap are great!

Do you really think that is the prudent thing to do given what's going on around us and the recommendations from every health professional to stay home?

I figure that I am here with a couple of buddies, so it is less than 50 people, we are usually isolated in the bush, and we are taking care of our mental health.  JMO.

  3. I have a TekVest and have worn it for years.  It is a little awkward for doing things other than riding.  I find it a little restrictive when bending (or trying to get up if you have fallen in the snow  )  However, I have  had a couple of oops when riding where I think I may have had more serious injuries rather than just bruises if I was not wearing it.  IIRC, my model is the SuperSport or something like that.  I have had it for almost 10 years.

  4. Ox, that flame is certainly unusual.  I know that even in the 70's and 80's that if there was a huge flame, there was a lot of MOE involvement and investigation.  This one is bigger than I have seen there in many years.  I expect there will be a story behind this one.

Beauty of a 7 day ride done..

thanks to all for the invite and the laughs along the way..

final kms was I believe 2050 kms.

amazing conditions minus some road running ( which destroyed a carbide) ..

My final tally from the GPS tracker was 2077.  It was great to have you along.

The road on A coming into Elk Lake from the north was just OK yesterday. A couple of sunny days would finish it. Getting to the fuel depot in Elk Lake was actually tougher as the streets were bare.

There is a 5 km. section of logging road on the A south of the 108 that is very heavily sanded and although the groomer had tried to groom the snow bank it hadn't worked too well. I would expect that with the sun today it would be a brutal ride. Otherwise from Timmins to Liskeard was an awesome ride yesterday with the exception of a few bumps between Matheson and Raymore. Nice way to finish the smoothest 5 day 1700 km. ride we have ever had in the Liskeard to Hearst Corridor.

Met one of your friends in the parking lot at the Westway when we arrived last night.  Said that we missed you by a day.

Ran down from Cochrane into Timmins then down the L143 to Gowganda then over to New Liskeard yesterday. 430kms in 8hrs. Conditions were absolutely perfect!!  Saw Sledjunk and crew heading north mid way!

Sorry we didn't get a chance to chat.  We ran from Gowganda to Cochrane via Timmins to end our 7 day excursion.

Anybody ever have issues with pre-2008 cam chain tensioners?

My 07 had that issue.  Happened at speed and the sled just coasted to a stop.  Bent all the valves and damaged 2 of three cylinders.  Happened at 9600 Km but still within 3 year warranty so a full new long block was installed.  Down on Saturday and back up by Thursday.

  8. Rode the Bonfield area with OntarioF7 and his GF.  The trails were hard packed with very little lube.  7Km into the ride, we were all overheating, so I stopped to put on my scratchers (forgot to install them when I unloaded from the trailer)  After that I was fine, but the SW and Viper were still in trouble.  Even the untracked section of the lakes were so crusted that there was no cooling or lube.  Road sections were bare.  They sure need the new snow.

  9. Taking a second look, is the jackshaft actually broken?  It usually protrudes out from the bearing enough to support the secondary.  I agree that Terry in Orillia has a lot of used parts and is quite reasonable.  His phone number is 705 323-4506.

Looks to me like the bolt for the secondary was not torqued and came out.  Spinning stuff coming apart at speed = lots of collateral damage.  Too bad.

  11. My sleds have been fairly reliable over the years, but since 07, I have been putting on 4000 - 7000 Km per year, and there are bound to be a few 'experiences'.

in '09, finishing off the 2nd OC Ride for Kelly, my sled ('07 Vector) coasted to a stop.  It cranked very quickly so it was obvious that the timing chain was gone.  I found out later that this was a recall on the engine and everything (long block) was covered under warranty, and I was back on the snow the following weekend.

A week later, just after breakin, the oil light came on.   Turned out that the oil tank was cracked and leaking.  Patched it up with JB Weld and was towed part way to Timmins while Evil and Hubby raced ahead to Timmins to get oil.  I was only down a liter, so topped it up and finished the trip.

2013 RAP Tour, Moosifer was now riding the '07 Vector, and on Day 2, blew a chunk out of the track at high speed going across Talon Lake near Bonfield.  Thanks to a friend living in Mattawa, who ferried all of the sleds to Mattawa, then the dead sled to Parry Sound for an emergency track swap and back.  Then ferried our remaining three sleds to Pembroke so that we could continue our trip.

2014 RAP Tour, as we finished the trip, Moosifer noticed that the W Arm had broken and was gouging the left rail.  Trip was over and the repair was made later.

Over the years, I have had other failures, and most have not been catastrophic.  My PB-80 blowing up a couple of years ago, comes to mind.  These sleds are really used in a harsh environment and stuff is going to break.  I love this sport, and all of these incidents simply enhance the memories and experiences.

That would suck.  If you need, I understand Terry in Orillia has lots of good used chaincases, sprockets, etc.  Around $200 complete.

Thanks.  Brad at Blue Beacon is friends with Terry and has purchased from him before.  If there is anything that is not a normal wear item, I am sure he will check with Terry rather than Yamaha.  Cannot wait for Tuesday when stuff can start moving forward.
