Yup been North and Quebec (albeit that was a shorter trip). Not my thing. Never been a mile chaser just so I can say I got 8000 km on this year. I much prefer a 150 km day where I need to work the sled on the trails. I did 1700 in Muskoka this year. Most of it I was tired sore by the end of the day (probably getting old).

Never liked big huge fast trails where there really is no technical riding. I like tight fast trails that I need to move around on just to keep a nice pace. I don't want a big heavy 4 stroke that is great for Northern fast trails Just so I can say I did 1000 miles an hour for 30 minutes. I like light 2 strokes that I can throw around when that trail gets bumpy and tight.  I suspect if I was younger I would be a flat brimmed long track trying to find powder and jump stuff kind of rider but those days have passed me by.

I have never like trailering and driving long distances to sled, Id rather ride than sit in a truck for 6-10 hours there and back. Its not worth it to me.

Where we are there is always snow and I can leave on a long trip every winter (depending on timing).  Im just as happy riding Muskoka, North Bay, Parry sound area and sitting down at my own place at the end of the day with people I sled with and Neighbours at the cottage.

To each his own and I'm not knocking anyone's preferences just stating my own.

Totally agree. Haliburton is my happy place. Trails and lakes, fantastic mix, right from my house. Have a 4 place enclosed trailer that has only been used for storing lumber for the last 10 years.

Its dated for Saturday Mar. 21 which would be 2 weeks down the road if that day was the 21st. As pointed out, that day is the 21st.

My guess is that with the longest season in the south this year they are running out of money for grooming.

Words is that HCSA has told their groomers that all grooming activity ends tonight - Mar. 07.

  3. Bought a 136" pre-installed-studded ice ripper type track way back when they first came to market... hated it. I was disappointed with the lack of penetration compared to a good stud. Also found the points to wear and dull down way ahead of the life of the track. The track itself was a thumper. Worst out of balance track I have ever encountered. I took the loss and bought a new track and went back to studs - never looked back.

As previously mentioned here about Lake Simcoe... Before moving to Haliburton, I used to live near Queensville and did all of my sledding around Cooks Bay / Holland River. You learn VERY quickly about the reasons for studding. Also mentioned here was the nightmare of making it 3/4 the way up an icy hill and rolling backwards - nothing more needed to say about that !

To all the guys who have modded their turbos well past the 200 hp mark and no studs ? gotta laugh at that.

However, this topic comes up in this forum EVERY year and is about as pointless as the other annual laugh fests :

    • What's the best oil ?
    • What's the best belt ?
    • What's the best sled ?
    • Hand signals
    • ad infinitum

    Have at it. :)

Blame the sleds , Yup. Typical easy blame. Its the guys behind the flipper, period. Looks like the yamaha is rounding a corner there. Seems to me a T Bone gone bad.

You CAN'T tell exactly what happened, but you CAN tell that it didn't have to happen.

What happened to losing the trail through Moose and Eagle?  Landowner?

PIA to go all the way around now

Camp Northland, whose property the trail ran through to Haliburton Lake Rd., had issues with the OFSC insurance policy for landowners. They pulled the land use agreement until there were improvements made to the policy, and here we are...

Same situation existed at Camp Towhee ( B Trail near West Guilford ) The trail was almost closed until they found that B trail was old "Legacy" trail and belonged to the County. It was a "close" call.

Drove up to have a look at Hali lake on Friday. No stakes as of then, I have said it before, if that lake is not staked... DON'T GO. It is too bad we lost the way in through Moose and Eagle, they are long frozen safe. Hali Lake is unsafe and unpredictable in cold years, it just got into the minus 20's here the last few days, should set up soon. There is no issue with PHU boundaries, that problem is where HCSA, Maple Leaf, and Opeongo meet (Whitney) and where Paudash and Maple Leaf meet south of Lake St Peter.

FWIW, Kennissis, Redstone firmed up pretty good as of today ( Feb 1 ) A little slush in the middle of Big Hawk and down at the Marina end of Kennissis, nothing major. Hopefully Haliburton Lake will come in soon.

The saddest part of all these posts is we are witnessing the beginning of the demise of groomed trail riding.  Not trying to be a nay sayer but until the snowmobile community as a whole becomes more responsible it will be in decline.

trail riding is uncool.  How many YouTube videos show a group riding a groomed trail for 8 hours straight without any big excitement?  If your not doing a big jump in deep powder your not being viewed.

Cans sell because loud is cool.  Chopping a tunnel in Ontario and posting it on Facebook is cool.    Adding saddlebags is only cool here on this site.

The new crew of riders are only worried about there 3 minutes of fame and self gratification.

Your post is SPOT ON. I was not fully aware of the Younger Youtube culture and the  monkey-see / monkey - do  aspect of "Street Culture". Rap music was old hat before I realized how huge it was and the billions being made from it. But along with pop cultural social influences, I also blame the poor parenting, public school system, and the nanny state of "entitlement" that has been festering since the late 70's. So, in that context, I guess we are all guilty...

Ask hcsa. They are very responsive with questions. I am guessing hailburton lake isn’t ready yet, which is holding up that trail. They lost trail access via moose lake because of camp was logging. Now they have to wait on hailburton lake, which takes longer, then eagle and moose. Sucks since old trail was always open in good time.

Access was discontinued because the camp's administration had issues with the OFSC insurance plan.

Roll into a town mid week with no reservations for the night only to have the owner open their normally closed mid week doors and provide a room after they ask you, "are you snowmobilers".

Or the local store deliver a pizza to the place your staying at who don't normally deliver and refuse to take extra money.

Or the local body shop let's you pull your sled into their shop, gets a portable heater so the frozen antifreeze in your sled can thaw out.

    Who ???

We have a major washout in our C trail north, which is a a major logging road that is supposed to be maintained.

MNR's answer was we cant afford the fix it.

They may not be able to afford to make repairs, but they will certainly mandate how the repairs are to be done. Nothing happens without their approval on Crown lands.

  11. I don't use anything but SnowTrackers. Been using them since 2002. They change a suggestion of turning into an absolute statement. Zero push. You will need to brush up on body english as the sled will carve. Total performance. As to whether to use semi-aggressive or full on aggressive, it depends on your stud setup. I use nothing but aggressive. Never had snow clogging and find that they are more efficient than the conventional duallies out there. Fast on the top end if that is a consideration. Check out the Snow Tracker website for installation instructions. You will need to drill an extra pilot hole for the front tab. And yes, they will be hard on floors , etc. without guides. Also, they will really dig into grass, soft dirt, etc.  I have wheel kits on all of my sleds. The carbides last a long time and take a lot of punishment in my experience. They are not cheap, but great bang for the buck.

A couple of items for Throwback Thursday

The 'car wash' @ Kenissis Lake  during the winter of '86 or '87

He sank it on a subsequent attempt.

Also, was the highlighted trail ever an official trail north from Kamiscotia? I think my friend who lived in Timmins from '92 to '99 mentioned to me about co-workers riding up to SRF using this route.

Watched a brand new Doo get fished out of the drink there a few years back. They had a truck up on the middle of the bridge with block and tackle / pulleys and a line down to the sled. The guy that hooked up the line  ( the rider? ) got pretty wet. :)
