Just getting into maintenance mode on the sleds.  Both brp 900 ace engines with the edrive primaries.  The 2014 has 28,000 km on it and the 2016 has 16,000 km on it.  What maintenance should I be doing to the clutches on these sleds if any?  To my knowledge neither of them have ever been touched.  We've owned both of them for about the last 10,000 km.  I'm not looking for any performance changes.  Just after reliability so I can run another 10,000 km on them without fail.  I'm already doing the drivelines (all bearings, sliders, a few new bogie wheels, etc) chaincase fluids and obviously the motor oil.  Maybe break pads as well if the pads are wore.  I've never worked on clutches, but am fairly handy.  Any advice would be appreciated.

BRP has kits for primary clutches. With the Ks on them I would do springs, rollers & pins in the secondary. There is lot of videos on you tube. Just make sure you are watching the right year for your sled. I know the way they lock the pins in the secondary changed over the years. You will also need some clutch tools. A lot of the parts are wear, springs get weak & loose performance or break.& the rollers in the secondary just blow apart.

  2. Dog sledding for the forest is costly & the interest in it is dying.  The cost of doing an event is costly and to cancel it at the last minute do to bad weather is worse. The forest has a lot of dogs to look after all year & there is not a lot of interest anymore in these areas. My snowmobile club would donate time to groom the trails for a local dog sled event every year. This did not happen much because it would get canceled a lot do to bad weather. It was canceled more then it was run to the point that the event is now no longer happening.

You dont half to worry about snowmobiling in the forest.  It will be there for a while.  One good thing that is happening is the cookhouse.  New people are taking it over. I am hoping it will be better then the last. I know there was a lot of complaints of very long waits & not much choice for a basic lunch. I know paying $55 to ride then spending 2 hours at the cookhouse was the biggest complaint.

At first I wasn't sold on even just the thought of online sales, but having been privy in the past to seeing the costs and loses, and seeing and experiencing first hand the volunteer burden, stress and safety that came with live sales it changed my view on it real fast.

I really don't like the online driver training at all. It takes away the first contact new young sledders have to volunteerism, and it's importance to organized snowmobiling, along with all the other things live courses provided hands on in person.  However I do know if the boat license people were successful in their bid for it we likely would of been totally shut out. Shitty all around.

I think any online driver training & no time behind the wheel of a boat, sled, groomer or any motorized vehicle is a good thing. When the boating Lic came out they ask me to sign up & they would do it for me. Man I feel safe with that. At least in class training can answer any questions & teacher can go into more details. With grooming I dont think any clubs would put somebody in a groomer after doing the online coarse on there own

Why does it hurt clubs? I haven’t been around long enough to know how it used to work. The funding model hurts clubs vs them doing permit sales? Just curious, other than seeing some old paperwork I have no idea how it was done pre 2016 when I walked into that man cave of snowmobile dudes 😂

I find talking to someone in person seems to get more volunteers. It also helps our permit selling locations get more customers. Now with the permit sales being online, makes it easier on the clubs. no more running around with permits & selling locations dont have to deal with filling out the paperwork

Saving money sounds great on paper but there is a lot of provincial disconnection right now, lots of clubs floundering with next to no volunteers and no clear direction of how to do things. Some volunteers adapted well to doing it this way, many haven't.

Without volunteers and them having a good grasp of how to do things correctly and clubs relying more and more on OFSC staff to direct the direction of the org, along with clubs/districts and the OFSC having to contract out a lot of what used to be day to day operations (which has been grossly accelerating even before Covid). Costs to keep trails open are going to be a lot higher than an in person AGM could ever be IMO.

Maybe we should not have on line permit sales,  & go back to in class driver training. On line is easier but is hurting clubs when it comes to getting volunteers.

So this is not something new for next season then?. It's been in place for a while now? Was it always like this?. Did that decision get made, because of some bad apples?.

Looks like someone that is new on the ofsc is going by the book. He said that it could be a conflict. The pres can say how much they get paid and how much they can groom. I agree with Nutter that when the dist is desiding on pay on payed posetions that the pres of the club has no vote. So the Dist sets the pay amount and the club groomer cordinator organizes the grooming. so what is the problem

Hard to feel sorry.  Call me what you will, but time and time again, STUPIDITY at its best..

I agree with you. I feel sorry for what the families are going through. It is bad enough they lost someone, and think they should be smart enough to stay off the lakes. Now there gone & this makes snowmobiling look bad. Dont know why, when it is the person behind the sled that makes the bad choice

Most diesels especially turbos needs to be plugged in after minus 20 C or so. Cold weather starts with glow plugs can shorten turbo’s Life. Learned that on my telehandler. Went thru two turbo’s and then finally agreed, I needed a block heater kit. They don’t normally use them Only glow plugs. Always blew a cold day after starting on glow plugs. No issue since I have been using block heater now. Truck could be different design though.

I will look into that. Thanks

How does it start in cold weather? Be an issue if no block heater in minus 20 ish weather? Thanks

Not sure yet. No problem at -12c. I don't think there will be an issue at -20c . -40c might be a different story

Let us know how you like the 3.0L DMAX..:right_on:

So far love the new 3.0L DMAX. Trailered to Haliburton forest and back. Not on the highway but a lot of hills & lower speeds. Averaged 12.4L. Can't wait to see what it is like on the highway. Tows awesome. Pulls up hills with out the engine revving over 4 grand like the 5.3L.

2017 5.3 Z71 Chevy  pulling Prostar Hybrid  2 wide    went to Val Dor  1689 km    18.4 L 100km   Longest trip for this truck   Usually North bay or so,  Fill in Sturgeon falls and on fumes in Guelph    All down hill so much better on fuel   :rotflmao:    Really makes a difference on how much you put your foot in it  but we all know that for years    I really would like to try an inline Lightning like Blake got the day we picked them up      I see the prices for the trailers took quite a jump

I was running the same truck with the same trailer as Blake. I think we picked up our trailers the same day LOL. I get about 16.4 to 16.7L 100km. I am running 6 speed transmission with 308 gears and find it a bit of a problem on windy & slushy days. It has a hard time holding its speed on a light upgrade. My buddy is running the same truck with 323 gears towing a tritan 167 and he is about the same as me on fuel.  We will see how the new truck works. Decided to try the new 3.0L duramax. More torque and at lower rpm. where the 5.3 is less torque but at high rpm. Should work well.
