Nothing like the mountains..I decided to be home for March this year and plan to be between Golden and Revelstoke next year for March. Im thinking I should have gone this year. It’s addictive for sure…young man’s game. Do it while you can.

Few trees down w all that wind. What snow is left is thin..very icy in the bush. Good fishing weather..not good for much else. I’m at 2400 km this year and and 2700 last year. No complaints from me. Next year will be better..I’m an optimist 😎

Had a Great Lake tour today. Mackenzie, Papineau, Bark, Cross, and Caughlin..going to go for a crap tomorrow. Too bad it’s not even March yet..usually my favourite month. Hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy it while it lasted. I’m hopeful for another good stretch of weather w some significant snow.

My combo is the seat bag and bag and 40 l adventure bag. Takes a bit of persuasion but I can get 4 litre jug of oil in the seat bag and still have room for a beverage 😎 Like everyone else don’t want oil in my clothes bag.

Some pics from last couple days. Lots of new snow but mild and not a huge base like usual. I’m betting the sunny days of march will be hard on trails. Get out while you can and enjoy it.

No real knowledge on current conditions. I can tell you this. Haliburton Lake has some currents in it and is typically one of the later lakes to be safe. I cut holes in Skootamattta Lake yesterday. Its is one of the earlier lakes to freeze and is a similar distance north with similar weather patterns. We have 7" in the area the stake line runs. Typically for 3rd week of February that would be well over 16". I've seen over 24" some years. So no good data, but my guess is the later lakes to freeze like Muskoka, Haliburton, Chandos, Mazinaw etc may not get there this year. Could be wrong, but thats my 2 cents. If in doubt, don't go or go check yourself before crossing. Not worth the risk. Hopefully someone who is local and on that lake can give you some better info.
Yes I’m familiar w that lake and how sketchy the ice can be. I am on opposite side of park and our lakes are early to freeze w little or no current. That being said we only have about 14 in of ice. Normally be twice that over here. It is definitely an odd year….

Any one in the area able to update…are they planning or able to stake Haliburton Lk to get the B trail connected. Also any immediate plans to stake Redstone and Kennisis Lks as well? Thanks

I agree. Still good snow to get out and explore. It looks like we will be in the field here Easter weekend. First N on wheat and then who knows. If it was wet I’d be up in the bush. Have fun and post pics 😀

Yes it’s extremely physical. The effort required at 8-9000 ft takes getting used to. 3 days in a row of aggressive riding is almost too much..almost 😀

Yes this was just a quick trip. Fly out for a week. GSR a in Golden BC. Same guy owns Mountain Motorsports..Polaris dealer. Great outfit. I rode a 163 expert summit a 165 Khaos and a 155 Khaos. Liked the 155 the most. More like I’m used to and more maneuverable. I’m a skidoo guy but liked the Polaris.

Finished out the season w 3 days riding in Golden BC. Sun every day no wind mild temps at 8-9000 ft. Hard to beat.

Truthfully if you want to shoot a big buck w limited time..go through a reputable outfitter. Sask Man or even NW Ont has lots of options. When you go on what is essentially public land being crown or even private farm land it’s about time spent and patterns of travel and patience. As you likely know you can spend several seasons waiting for that one trophy to come by.
That’s a nice little 142 in 8 point just to tease you a little 😀

Yup..but my best buck was a 154 inch 10 point w a broken drop tine that was shot off crown land at our hunt camp in the north. Sometimes see 8-10 deer a day when in field…Coyotes? Lots of em…nuisance is all they are.

Parked the sled at cottage. 3100 km for season..so far 😀 I did not go on an overnight ride or travel from home base. Was a great winter for me. The cost of a permit is peanuts if you are able to get out and use it.
Planning to get a couple day’s riding in yet in Golden BC before end of month. If I’m lucky get back for a few days of late season play before Easter.
Support your local snowmobile club!! Hats off to the many volunteers in all aspects of the organization that make it work. Cheers.

Some interesting thoughts…As I’ve said before..I’ll say it again. Make the snowmobile license the trail permit. Every licensed machine in the province has a valid trail pass. Can’t get insurance without lic/permit. More funds to go into trail maintenance and grooming.
Ya ya I know…people north of French river don’t buy licenses…too bad. Change it. Yes I also know not every licensed snowmobile rides on groomed trails..too bad…Same argument made for auto license. If I don’t travel 400 series highway can I get a discount tag?. No it doesn’t work that way.
Enforcement? It’s been non existent last few yrs…this model would make what little enforcement their is easier.
Trails in the Deep South ..get rid of them. Unless our weather patterns change I see no value in mapping, staking, insuring some of these trails. Waste of time and money. I will admit I own several farms some w trails on them. Where I live just go back to what it was in the 70s..if it snows go to the bush and have a fire. Go see the neighbours…When I see newer groomers sitting in the south and more northern regions forced to use much older higher houred units to maintain trails that have ample snow still and will for a few weeks yet I question the logic. All those permit buyers in the south are going north to ride. The few that will be lost because they don’t have a local trail are already gone.
You asked for thoughts..I’ve shared mine. Not looking for an argument.-

That is a cool ride. I was on Dog several yrs ago w my son doing the big loop…When it went across Dog to Chapleau. Went south on Dog and could not find trail to Manitouwik. On last day of loop went east of Hawk onto Manitouwik and met a local fishing out at far end said trail across to Dog hasn’t been cut through for few yrs. I know you know that area. I would love to get back and spend a week just exploring. Beautiful area w lots of off trail adventures.

I don’t get the deal w $30 000 sleds. A 2024 850 Backcountry X is $17900…awesome suspension, 146 skid and can option either 1.6 in ice cobra or 2 in powder max track….that’s all I need. I do wish they would go back to 3 yr warranty though.

Lid for a hard bag..likely off a touring machine. No markings or anything to identify what it came off. Was on 173 trail east of Lk St Peter.

Couple of different places I like..Spectacle Lake Lodge is popular and has a great restaurant. Madawaska lodge (the old Snoasis) is cool as well. Not sure on winter hours but info is available on the inter webs. Cheers

Yes I think Lk St. Peter is easier for fuel. Can easily get to Bancroft and back grab fuel again on way past. Can be tricky around Bancroft to get fuel or lunch if town has melted off. Lots of pavement. BC Cafe is just across trail at Birds Creek on way into Bancroft..easy to get in and out of but I think granite is nicer atmosphere and of course Porterville diner in Lk St. Peter is a favourite..easy access right off trail. Check their hours to be sure. Good trails to the east their as well. Loop up to Madawaska and back into Whitney. Very scenic trails and beautiful stretch along the Madawaska river..IMO the track bed from LSP to bancroft is flat and kinda boring…. Have a good ride.

When I rode Gaspe on sled I used BRP Go app. No cell service in a lot of the area but gps in phone tracks your position and updates as you go…Was awesome..I thought those same trails were atv-sxs trails during the rest of year. I have not seen it but I think Quebec has an atv trail map website same sort of thing as the Quebec snowmobile trail website?
