  1. Great topic. I have experienced this situation as everyone else. I remember we had an issue at work with one of our propane dispensers that was covered in ice. Tech came in and sprayed some stuff on the ice and it disappeared almost immediately. He said it was alcohol he sprayed on the area. Maybe some isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle would work? He had a big spray bottle...like a litre bottle but the ice disappeared immediately and the mechanism that was stuck was now free.  Might be worth a try to see if works on stuck areas and in a spray bottle its easy to apply and you get decent use from the amount of product you have. I know usually isopropyl alcohol is expensive if you have to buy it retail. Better deal if you can get it wholesale.

  2. Thinking of doing day trips out of New Liskeard next week. I see L162 and part of the A trail south of L162 has been showing yellow for a while. Anyone been on it lately and can advise how rideable these trails are or the reason why they are yellow when the trails around them are green?? Maybe logging or contractors working in the area? Dont mind riding a few km of tough conditions but dont want to do it for 10k or more. Thanks

  3. I have a cinder block basement that was built in 94 when I put the addition on. Its on bedrock but uneven. Minimum space is 3 ft and the highest about 6 ft.  The blocks are not filled with cement. I built a mechanical room at one corner and it has all the water connections in there except for the pipes running to the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room. I heated the mechanical room with a baseboard heater (1500 watt) but the room is very well insulated. I have a submersible pump in the lake and run heated lines from the lake to the room and from the room to the septic system about 180 feet away. The main basement is not heated. I have had a thermometer in the basement since it was built as I was worried about the pipes freezing running along the floor. Most of the time we were only up on weekends but I can say that the temp never went below 26F that I saw and that was at a really long cold snap where is was continually cold at night of -20F or colder. Most times the temp is at 30F and above. I never had a pipe freeze. I always drained the water down to the heat room when I left at the end of the weekend as I never wanted to have to worry about something going wrong when I was not there but it only takes seconds to drain. Shut pump off and open all the taps in the cottage then open 2 taps in the basement and drain all the water out of the pipes. Put antifreeze in all the basin traps and shower trap. The basement itself is roughly 24 ft by 28 ft and the heat room is contained in that. Hope this helps.

We were sledding the NCDN last Wednesday when my scratcher broke while we were heading towards Hearst. I called up P&L in Hearst to arrange to get a new one installed. When we arrived they drove our party to local restaurant  and picked us up so we could eat a late lunch while they repaired my sled. Hats off to them for customer service.

I agree on P&L. Great service (inc after hours if thats whats necessary)and they try their best to do whats good for the customer. Marc and Simon the mechanic just great folks. Heck they even remembered me from one year to the next and I was only there once each year. They will do what ever they can to allow the touring rider to complete their trip with the shortest delay possible.

Not sure what their "walk in" status is these days, but Bennett's in Whitby has had end of season discounts on instore BRP stuff - bags, gas cans, etc. See what they have in stock.

Thanks for the tip... I will check that out for sure

Did you not see the bag on my sled up in Kap'? It was the SR21.

Unfortunately no. For some reason you always wanted to have your sled tarped up when parked. I will have to call around to a few dealers and see if they have any in stock. I imagine not but its worth a try.

For daytripping I think the short bag is fine. On a XS chassis 'doo the SR21 needs a bit of modifying. I haven't tried installing it w/o the dual accessory bracket installed.

The smaller toilet bag holds my 'tool kit' and the bulkier 1 holds a first aid kit & some 'spares'.20210325_212630.thumb.jpg.9b70448b54bdd79f6d61c9b1c54a2d14.jpg

Still room for a pair of gloves, tuque or hat.

Thanks for the pics. I was thinking of buying 2 of the smaller bags but maybe I should buy a small bag and the SR21. Never seen the SR21 in person and was just wondering if it had noticeably more capacity than the smaller bag for the more money it is. Always like to have as much storage as possible but I think I like the looks of the shorter bag better.

Borrowing a friend's small gas caddy to see how it fits. I've sorted out the stuff I carry so this bag will be OK down here.

I'll keep the SR21 bag for trips up north.

Is there much difference in capacity with the new bag compared to the SR21??

  9. I use clear Mylar from a sign or label shop. Cut it so that its just larger than the trail pass decal. Put trail pass on the Mylar. Put Mylar with pass on it on the sled. The Mylar can be slowly and carefully pulled off if necessary (broken windshield) without the pass showing the "void" . Reapply to new windshield. There is also a spray label remover (cant remember the name right now) you can buy from the professional sign or label maker that takes the glue off what ever the label was on without damaging the surface the decal was on. I have been using it for years and never had an issue damaging any surface. Especially a plastic windshield.

I think Kirkland may have changed their policy on this. We stayed there last year and went on a saddle bag trip for 4 days. I told them when we booked thats what I was going to do and they said no problem leaving the trailer there as long as it was put in the newly plowed area adjacent to the hotel parking lot. We were the third trailer there when we left for the trip and there were 4 more parked there when we got back 4 days later. Never charged us to leave the car and trailer.

Sorry...I am wrong on this. We stayed at the Comfort Inn and left the trailer.  We sledded in and stayed at the Super 8.

The same thing happened to us at the Super 8 in Kirkland lake a couple years ago. Informed them what our intentions were when I made the reservations then when we checked in were told we couldn't leave truck and trailer there. I said never mind, we'll go somewhere else. They changed their mind rather quickly. I've been doing touring trips in Ontario for 25 years and had never had a problem until then. Their lot is fairly small , though.

Hey, probill...it was great to meet and chat with you at the Advantage as well.  Glad you and your wife got to enjoy all of the local Kap and Hearst loops.  Would love to connect with you again next year...perhaps up north again, and down here in Simcoe/Muskoka on our local trail system.

As revrnd has rightly pointed out, I can't take any credit for his ice hammer, although I do like to spread the word about how useful it is.

I would be interested in that as well. Always fun to explore new trails and always better to be in a new area with someone who knows the trails. We will be in the NCDN next year for sure and also hope to do a couple of tours in Quebec if this Covid thing gets behind us by the end of the year. Revrnd's hammer has a few dents in it that it didnt have before but I look forward to putting lots more dents in it next year!!!

  13. Just brutal customer service on behalf of the GM. I would have thought any customer willing to drop the money for a 4 or 5 night stay plus room tip would have the red carpet rolled out for them. Seems like they sprung this rule on you guys after you arrived? They should have advised you about these rules when you were booking your stay there, not after you arrive. Not sure if it would do any good send an email to head office about this but I am sure if they are any type of quality organization, head office would like to hear about this. I know we always investigated customer complaints when it appeared the customer had a valid concern. Then again expressing your concern to anyone at HO not familiar with the sledding situation and trailers would probably require to have the circumstances explained to them over and over.....

Turns out the other couple is @probill & his wife.

Hi revrnd...just got back from Kap this afternoon. Great to meet and have a chat with you and irReverent. Thanks again for the information you gave us on all the local trails. We had a great 2 days in Hearst on the 165, 163, 115, 171, 159, 153 etc. all trails were in great shape. Friday we did almost 200 miles on those trails and only saw 1 sled!!  I can tell you that irReverent's hammer got a real workout!! Hope to meet up again with you guys again next year. Let me know when you will be sledding in my area.

When reporting, please make sure you are comparing apples to apples - Mrs. H's has halibut for their fish and chips. The other place 02sled mentioned? Needs confirmation. Many places use haddock which is OK, but doesn't compare to the halibut. Now if they had a bit of cod around...

Wanted to mention a great thing about Mrs. H's is that you can call ahead and pick up your order as you arrive. We usually phoned just before Bala and arrive in 20 minutes to have the order sitting there ready. To switch things up once, I tried to do something similar at the fancy pizza place in Parry Sound - Maurizios - but was told I would have to order on Wednesday to pick up a pizza on Friday evening while travelling to the camp. No amount of persuasion or reasoning would alter this arrangement. Pizza made from scratch there usually took 20 minutes of waiting time at the restaurant.

We used to order ahead to pickup at Mrs H's but tried this past fall and they told us they would not do this anymore. They told me too many no shows. I even offered to pay over the phone when I placed my order and they still refused. I hope they have gone back to allowing folks to preorder to be ready to pickup when you get there.

  16. We were on Georgian Bay yesterday. The bay is staked from Beausoleil to Penetang 304 land trail. Penetang Bay itself has lots of slush. You can run it but I honestly dont know how much ice is actually there. There was about 5" of fresh snow on the bay too and a fair number of tracks but no beaten path that I could see. Better bet is to run from HH to Midland. Well packed even in the fresh snow and literally no slush.

  17. Wife and I have done this trip several times in the past 2 years from Bonfield area and found it a fairly easy ride as long as the trails are reasonably groomed which they usually are. We did Bonfield to Temagami and back same day about 2 weeks ago. Only part of this trip we both dont look forward to are the 10 miles of trail immediately north of Temagami once you get off the lake on the north side of Temagami. Even if groomed this part of the trail is twisty just like Muskoka and is tiring. However once you clear that section the long stretch on the other side of hiway 11 is your reward as it is wide and straight until the bit of trail about 5 miles south of Latchford where it gets a bit twisty again. Twice last year the wife and I did Bonfield to Latchford and back same day. We are not breaking an speed records, just steady running with only a few stops. Hope you get a sunny day to really enhance your ride.

  18. Thinking of heading up to this area next week and run up through the NCDN. I see there is this short stretch of the A (about 5km) that is yellow. This is the area north off of Hiway 570 towards where the closed trail L103 intersects the A trail just after the run on Sesekinika Lake. Does anyone know why its yellow and how bad it is to run? I checked the facebook page of the Kirkland Lake club but didnt see a reference to it. Thanks.

  19. I am looking for some custom numbers. Can anyone recommend a company they have good experience with in the Midland/Orillia area. Also what were you charged? I am not looking for anything too fancy. White with black border probably.  Looking for good quality vinyl being used. thanks.
