    Terrain?

Other than the Canyon it'self, I'm not sure there's more than 10' of topography between Cochrane and Moosonee.

It's aboot as dead flat as you can git.

I could look up the marks on the topo map, but don't want to dig'm out right now.

We're lookin' at a big pc of paper with hardly any lines on it!

  2. I've always heard "lice", but I'm not an insectomologyst.

    ???

There was one time that we were stopped - wrenching on sumpthing, and I have a "trunk" built on my old sled, and I had the lid set aside on the ground.

A few minutes later when we turned around - there were thousands of them up in that lid.

    Just amazing!

    Just dumped them out. LOL!

    Usually see them late season.

See the snirt showing in the firth pic?

Up north they don't have that problem.

However - if you DOO see sumpthing that looks like that - It's likely snow lice.

And there can be HUUGE (in my best Trump voice) areas spread all down the trail of them.

Placing a helmet back on the trail a distance behind a broken down sled is a great signal

Many moons ago we were heading west on D into ... Schreiber (or maybe Terrace Bay?) and we found a helmet in the middle of the trail.

    ???

We stopped and looked all over.

    Looked around some more....

And then a little longer yet ....

Finally we found two gurls (ladys) that were out putzing  around two up (don't recall the skidoo, but it was a little older I think) and I think they said that the throttle stuck on them and they went for a dead run (?) stright for the trees - clear over there!

About that time the snow started coming down like twoney's!

Dead calm and the snow coming down so hard - it was almsot blizzard conditions!

So we fetched the gurls out of the bush and sent them on their way.

Turns out that we were pretty close to town, so they could have walked it off if need be.

    Fortunately they didn't git hurt!

I don't think they bailed, and obviously they didn't think to hit the kill switch.

I'm just glad there wasn't a head in that helmet when we found it!

Did George Carling not say something to the effect of anyone slower than you are idiots. Anyone faster are maniacs. I do believe you can be charged with careless. As once a long time ago I caught a bit of air as I approached an intersection.  The officer said that he was debating to charge me with said offense.  Meanwhile they were standing in middle of said intesection just after a blind hill top. I said why? I think I landed it perfectly and to my right. No humor. But no charge.

Back-in-the-day when the trail south out of Hearst actually went SOUTH out of Hearst (not west to Mooseland) we were cruising along pretty good on the groomed trail right beside the road, just outside of town somewhere, and didn't notice a driveway crossing. We were likely running 85/90 klicks? The trail pitched up a bit for the drive, but on the other side of the drive it must have dropped out 10'. We were both a ways down the trail when we landed. Didn't really slow down, but sure looked back to see what just happened!

  7. Well, one of them did actually swamp it early in the vid.

Not sure if this version shows it or not.

So that leaves one guy swimming by himself, or the other two w/o a spotter and vid recorder.

So not sure that it really mattered?

Yeah - it showed it, and I guess they fished him out before the moved on down river.

Maybe the other two beached it for a bit?

  8. There must be some sort of understanding on both sides as I am sure that it was posted here a month ago that it was all groomed.

Prolly just can't post it officially open until the T is dotted and all the I's are crossed?

I can't imagine that the hydro is concerned about anything other than liability, which I think is pretty much covered by law anyhow?

Absolutely...everyone is different. My frustration is that she was totally on board with retiring to Port Severn right up until I said lets get a contractor to do the build and sell in Toronto.

Any chance she thought that you said Fort, in stead of Port?

I could see that bein' a bit of an issue....

    ???

I'd like to ride through there some day, but I don't know aboot moving there....

In the news tonight they said they went " off trail " ... im not sure if they said that because they were on a lake OR that means they left the staked lake crossing ?

    cheers

... and that ratt there is what they could target.

"No riding off of QFSC (?) approved trails, and no riding ON THEM unless it is determined by sanctioned, bonded and insured agents of the provincal clubs that they are safe and open for business."

Or any other means that sounds good at the time to make it appear that they are "dooing sumpthing to save us from ourselves".

  11. The problem stems from the fact that we have oodles of people hired simply to pass new laws.

Just how many "new" laws doo we need?

Just enough to keep up with evolving tech is all IM/HO.

    So what's a politician s'posed to doo?

We could even ditch 1/2 of the ones that we have currently too....

    MINISTER PROMISES CHANGES

Laforest met officials at the SQ command post late on Wednesday, promising legal changes that could prevent this type of incident.

A press conference had already been planned for Thursday to announce changes to the law concerning adventure sports, which includes snow mobiling, the minister said.

Oh yeah - yet another doo-gooder going to pass yet another law....

  13. Boy, that Yammi has got windshield!

Kind'a like the late 70's when the Exciters and Enticers had fan cooled motors and tunneled the heat up behind the windshield.

We didn't have heated grips or thumb warmers, nor shield, but that heat was somewhat noticeable.

I could show you around Algoma, and I'm 600 klicks away.

I'm guessing that most guides don't git far from the lodge.

And now... The other side of the story....

Hi All , i have this update from a very well connected friend of mine that this story has another side. please read below. Steve Hutton UPDATE : I knew there was something wrong with this whole story, so the TRUTH is the person who posted this story was traveling on the wrong side of the trail going way too fast head on into a guy who had his nephew sitting in front of him. He literally stood up and put his arm up to protect the child in front of him which caused the bruising in this photo. This gent is still shook up about the whole incident, now who ya gonna believe two hot dogs ripping the trail apart or a guy with a kid in front of him. There are always 3 sides to every story, his side, your side and the truth stuck in the middle, Im sure BOTH parties are not telling the whole truth but the actual truth is we dont have a bunch of Mad Maxes running around our trail systems! Feel free to copy paste this entire post!

I'm just not seeing how that story coincides with the original?

Sounds like complete opposite roll reversals.

  16. Well, the guide should have known - be'inst that is what he is hired for.

The others were following someone that was s'posed to have known.

Falling through in a current is usually a death sentence I think.

    Terrible.
