  1. Today's the last day to buy a permit, with the $50 rider 'confidence' September bonus (as has been mentioned above, but repeated below fyi):

The OFSC is also providing a one‐time “confidence bonus” for snowmobilers who sign up for the Rider Advantage Program at the time of early permit  purchase.

If a Provincewide closure occurs before February 16, 2021, the OFSC will provide a bonus to your permit account as partial payment towards a 2022 Seasonal or Classic Trail Permit. Snowmobilers who sign up for Rider Advantage this September, between the 1st & 30th, will qualify for a bonus of $50. For those signing up for Rider Advantage from October 1 to November 1 (inclusive), the bonus is $25. Gift Cards purchased in the same periods are eligible for the bonus ONLY if the gift card is redeemed for a permit before February 16, 2021 and the purchaser signs up for Rider Advantage when redeeming their gift card for a permit.

Not $ off - more like insurance, to be applied to next season's trail pass.

    __

Ordering was painless. Wish they provided an option to order (and pay for) trail guides. It's a mailout anyways. $2 or $3 a map, less if you order more, or something along those lines. Money would go  to OFSC, a good thing. Maps (guides) would be in our hands. Planning trips made easier. Advertisers reach target audience. There are toggles for Go Snowmobiling and Supertrax (dood for them). Toggles for District guides would be helfpul. .

    Both are still open.

I think the CG was sold but nothing has changed at it.

Day trips from the STP yard for us last year. Great days, especially with Soup leading. Hope that trails from these 2 hotels open next year.

Won't happen, Fall right till the snow flies is a very popular time for the atv crowd to get rides in and also with Hunting season starting up.

In China, headlights were prohibited - without lights, cars proceeded slowly. There were fewer night time accidents.

Hunters have access to reams of ( free ) online maps. To penalize sledders so that others don't use our maps seems like the one dimensional thinking, above.

It's an old topic, no desire to rehash. We were landowners, granting trail rights (trail closed when gas station closed). No-one ever provided an FAQ stating that digital rights would be withheld. Maps were ready for fall sled ( and ATV ) show. Freely distributed. Let the planning begin ( for us ). Grab and ride ( apparently ) for Atv'ers under this model.

  4. You're just making yourself hard to find, Slomo.  :)  STG perfected that routine years ago, (the bridge is out, moat's filled, wish your were here maybe not the last one )

Enjoy the season ahead in Ontario , the Rock and environs between.

good luck to us all, the virus isnt going away, obviously we cant stop it. Ski

    Good point, Ski.

We're looking at 'base' style trips. Out all day, lunch on trail, back to base. Of course, if restaurants figure out some way to accommodate us, glad to support them. Might involve modified take-out, some type of shelter outside (not kidding...Dock Lunch in Penetang comes to mind...wooden-lean to with tarps ...although they have inside in winter. Picture the wooden awning outside, with perhaps a portable heat supply in the way-way north on a cold day). Mad Max snowmobiling...here we come.

Also going to miss Turbo Doo, btw. Never read the tipping point post or saw it coming. Like many, really enjoyed his writing. Definitely enjoyed the riding, comradery. In my best Arnold Sz. voice - 'he''l be baaaaack' (I hope).

Quality Inn in Petawawa is also particularly well placed.

As someone mentioned, it would be nice to look at the interactive guide to bookmark suggestions like this. Look at surrounding trails, access, loops, etc. Heck, starting the guide early in the fall would allow the ' kinks' to be worked out now, rather than in - season.

I get the landowner argument about not running it all summer ( ATV's)  ... but judging by the lack of traffic after the long weekend ( highway and trail ) wouldn't mid September/ early October be a good launch date?

Thanks for Pettawwa suggestion, Slomo. Filed away in the slow cooker, so to speak.

  7. I stopped in to check out a cross country ski resort in the Goulois River area once. Got on their email list (mostly for parking, 'tho wife has expressed interest in the activity).

Closed this winter - ongoing covid, border shut down to American guests was the reason.

They're north of Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma. I suspect that area relies a lot on American guests, winter and summer.

Not directly a sled destination, but a winter activity that's not opening this year.

I ordered two permits online this morning.  They took my money, I'm sure.  No email confirmation or receipt and no page to print at the end of the process.  This is still some kind of $hit show.

Can't speak to this year's process (haven't ordered yet) but as someone who previously enjoyed going to the retailer gas station, filling up, buying lunch (spending local $) or, if at a powersports store, same story with purchases...I spoke against the online purchase process as detrimental to those who always supported us. Fast forward to covid restrictions and I'm thankful online is in place. Sounds like implementation issues, but overall a good plan.

Noticed that stamps to office have unique self printed designs* and reflect upon prior oc.com suggestions about 'printing' day passes. "Can't be done", said many.

    _____

    * stamps have likely been self printed for years. I feel like George H.W. Bush saying 'wow' in a super market when he saw a can of soup scanned - not manually entered - into a cash register ('tho that hasn't passed the snopes.com test). This week's stamp actually had a charity's emblem in the stamp. Luddites - they walk among us.

  9. We were getting March updates of gas stations closing because Covid infected individuals handled the merchandise ( so to speak ). And restaurants closed down entirely, not just to inside dining.

No gas, no food - trails closed.

Hard to forecast ahead this year, but we all know what we're buying into.

Personally, with the borders closed ( sorry, Ski ), Ontario residents incredible approach to date, weather being allowed to 'set up' again ( just my observation ) - I think it'll be a great season.

Looks like ofsc is .... banking on record sales this coming winter.

Yep. Florida is closed. Many friends have made the decision to stay north this winter. I've heard others looking into winter activities.

And in breaking news, ( aka another reason to stay here) Florida just released 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes. What can go wrong? Give me snow and ice in winter 2021!

"In the Florida Keys, the local mosquito control agency has just approved the release of 750 million genetically engineered mosquitoes. ... The species they're targeting is the Aedes aegypti or “yellow fever” mosquito, an invasive species that transmits diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.."

Keep tweeking nature until you get it perfect- said no one, ever.

  11. Haven't given much thought to season interruptions. Buying in Sept. to get benefit of the $50 'next year' (fair, IMO - ''fairer" if the mid Feb date was extended to March...since we rarely get good southern/mid  Ontario sledding in until Feb. 1st).

Actually see a role for gov't in these types of issues - stimulus spending - put in more than normal and assuage (potential) buyers with a gov't backed guarantee for season interruptions/cancellation.

About the maps, I think advertising in some areas is an easier sell if the ad is on a map rather than an app.

Advertisers pay $ hundreds per map ( guide )  ad - from what I've heard, good return on ad investment $.

If it's break even or revenue positive - print yearly.

As noted, it provides the " big picture ' for riders. Equally important - provides safety. I'm not sure we've reached the marine GPS high quality product or take-up / use yet. Why put riders at risk by removing paper maps ( guides)?

I would like to see that at 6pm when it is -25C.

I actually think that one of the amenities sledders may look for ( or transport themselves to the staging hotel ) is a BBQ. Particularly if we have a past March scenario of restaurants closing.

I've seen guys bring them before ( not mentioning where, in case it's not permitted- insurance, crazy Ontario lodging rules, etc.). There will be more tailgating this year. Either because of the restaurant " ick" factor noted above or restaurants choosing to close for the winter.

Put on the dry gear and cook :)

You only have brakes on one axle?

A salesman at the Novi snowmobile show mentioned that trailers they send to Ontario only need brakes on one axle. New York State ( where that trailer was made) requires brakes on both axles.

I would have at least up sold him on a new Doo..:poke2:

Google Pixel 3 XL takes good photos. Thanks Turbo Doo.

The portage guy is a Doo candidate:

    1. His BRP ATV didn't start; mechanic spent 1 hour on it and says 'not fixed this weekend' so he rents the last canoe at Swift Canoe rental in Waubeshine and hits the river (if your BRP product breaks, rent a canoe);

    2. They canoe 1.5 hours mid week to a spot on the lake, only to notice they left drinking water in the truck. Solution - stay out there until all beer is consumed, then head back to truck for water (if you own a BRP product, beer makes everything better);

    3. On the river, paddling side by side back to the trucks, he asks if we have rolling papers. WTF? Am I that dishevelled after 3 days in the bush? (don't answer, 14Snow ,Turbo-Doo , Domino et al)

So yes, a Doo rider indeed  :-)

...your govt is holding my property, tools, and snowmobiles hostage. cant get out of either, cant go sledding here, unless i buy all new EVERYTHING, INC SLEDS! Ski

Sorry to hear. You've been a tremendous asset to northern Ontario sledding - great information from your team over the years. Hope that this turns around by winter.

The flipside is that Canadians have no access to their Florida properties (and physical assets), as well.

  17. Today, while portaging a canoe near the McDonald river bridge ( Baxter Snow Riders - Port Severn area) I mentioned to a middle aged guy we joined at the waterfalls ( canoe pull out) that we were walking on a snowmobile trail. He asked about the trails, mentioned he got out of the sport when he bought recreational property in Florida.  This year, he might be back. " What else is there to do in winter"?

I sense an uptick in ofsc permit sales and trail use.

Pic of the McDonald river bridge, water side attached. So much time spent up top, in winter....never saw it from the water until this weekend.

  18. Some good tekvest ideas, above. Have also worn one since 2007 (same year I bough the Yamaha Attak, but left vest on hanger because 'what could happen on a break in ride'). Light snow over glare ice, 2 full 360 degree spins and over the windshield (engine braking, who knew). Russian judge gave me an 8 for 'style' as I flailed thru the air. Never again. I'll wear it (and helmet) even loading a trailer. Time for a new one. Great thread - add me to the buying group, if any. Tekvests seem smaller now. I seem bigger. At the least the product's moving in the right direction.

Today, while the province was announcing Stage 3 (generally 'open'), Toronto put our a release stating no large gathering permits until October - and that's a rolling target (events, festivals).  https://www.blogto.com/radar/2020/07/toronto-cancels-events-festivals-october/

Keep an eye out for Mississauga and Peterborough announcements regarding the autumn - they may differ from 'Toronto', above, which also cancelled the October 18th marathon (race).
