So my 2004 Triton clam should get a new axle? I've been looking at it, beat it a bit with a hammer and it is holding out fairly well. That said, two new 900TR sitting on a 18 year old axle isn't my cautionary style. $800 is USD, so easily about $1100 CDN, if I can find one, plus the install.

All that said, you make some good points.

    Thanks

If I hit it with a hammer ,it would dent. It was literally rusting away. I guess if yours doesn't dent and seems structurally sound then it would seem to be ok. They are very easy to change if you have a floor jack and a couple jackstands. Maybe some heat to heat up rusted nuts. In the overall picture, money spent on that is cheap compared to a new trailer. Cheers.

  2. Had a friend of mine break the axle on his sled trailer due to rotting apart, so I started paying closer attention to mine, it's a 2008 Triton clamshell. Axle itself was very rusty so I replaced it. Cheap insurance. Although finding a galvanized one was a challenge. The aluminum frame was rotted away due to the insulator between the axle and frame wearing away, so that needed some repair. This trailer has a ton of miles on it from several  trips from Pennsylvania to Cochrane, Quebec, etc. But I'm not planning on buying a new one. If it was me, if there's any doubt, if you're stuck on the side of the road with a broken trailer, $800 would seem like a bargain.

  3. The same thing happened to us at the Super 8 in Kirkland lake a couple years ago. Informed them what our intentions were when I made the reservations then when we checked in were told we couldn't leave truck and trailer there. I said never mind, we'll go somewhere else. They changed their mind rather quickly. I've been doing touring trips in Ontario for 25 years and had never had a problem until then. Their lot is fairly small , though.

  4. We had no complaints staying there. If they still do it, jump in the hole in the ice. It's not as bad as I expected. It's a little pricey, especially if you sit in the bar until they boot you out but well worth it in my opinion.

Jamie the guy who owned the Ice Hut, was burnt out from restauranteur duties.  He was ex law enforcement,  that got into the restaurant business.  He sold,  and last i heard when we chatted with him in march,  he was wanting to get into the private eye side of things. Mrs.  Turbo Doo is following the new restaurant on Instagram,  and it looks decent so far.

Good news as far as I'm concerned. I never cared for that guy.

  6. PLC is spot on, Forestel is a little fancy for my taste, especially on a guys  trip but I bet your wife will love it. The bar menu was much more to our liking than the restaurant one. You won't be disappointed in the accomodations or the trails.

  7. Have had mine for probably 10 years also. I believe it is a supersport. I definately had to go to a larger jacket size to fit over it but the new ones may be less bulky. I absolutely will not ride without it. Once you get used to it,it's just natural. Feels a little bulky but does not restrict any movement (other than bending) . I have not found mine to hold odor at all.

    I hope so also

I would think if you want to make money, you had better be an advocate for the trail...Best of luck to all involved...

I don't even think he cared if the place made money. He just wanted to keep it open so the big loop was doable. Just the kind of guy he is. A more genuine guy you would be hard pressed to find. I hope whatever situation he is in now works out well for him.

Was Sean just the 'operator', not the owner?

I could be wrong, but when talking to him I believe he had a piece of the pie there. There seems to be a huge amount of politics in place in all things that have to do with northern Ontario snowmobiling, sadly.

  10. Sean was an awesome advocate for that stretch of trail.Hopefully whoever takes his place is as passionate as he was,but I doubt it.

Glad they put some money and time in it,it was badly needed.

What was the issue Halfway had this year?  Late start due to trail issues?  Or is there more to it than that (low traffic, facility issues???)

Let's just say the place needs some work. I'm not being critical, I've been all over Ontario and appreciate all the work that goes into keeping sledders happy and the trails open.Without some major money put into that place the roof will cave in.Literally.I will say Sean is a great guy and puts his heart and soul into that place.

aubrey falls trading has opened, closed several times in the last several years. now black creek outfitters. tough row to hoe. remote area with LOTS OF DOWN TIME. a few weeks of sledding, a few weeks of hunting, a few weeks of fishing clients... the rest  is up keep, and paying overhead. if you were buying it as a living place, and make a bit of money with gas and lodging and didnt mind the service hours or return on time and investment... it MIGHT be worth it.

it sucks for those needing services to ride sleds atvs ect... in the area because without them, no more elliot lake to halfway, without alot of fuel, or a HUGE DETOUR toward the soo, heyden, goulais river for fuel before treking north toward wawa. with the troubles saw this year, it wouldnt surprise me if halfway haven closes in winter again.  lots of hurdles are going to pop up in district 13 this year. LOTS! ski

Sean at Halfway certainly didn't sound optimistic when we were there this year.
