Why are we not open yet??

Ok , so we got our turn at a winter storm and it was a doozy, thanks

to all in the sledding community that lent a hand to those in need.

So then, why are we not open? Thanks to our great volunteers most of the

staking was done early, but there are still some small sections to do in various

areas. Then every mile of trail has to be audited to see if the staking/signage

meets the OFSC spec.s. Then we have to send in a form saying that we have

completed our audit and everything is up to snuff and then if theres snow we

can open.

Which brings me to my next point......snow. Believe it or not many area are

lacking snow. The wide open fields were stripped bare by the howling winds on

mon. and tues. So you have the extremes of huge drifts along fence and bush

lines, ditches and valleys are filled in but any flat open areas specifically plowed

and wheat fields have very minimal snow cover. Yesterday I watched a sled

crawl lurching across a plowed field out passed the trail closed sign where the

stakes ended, trying to figure out where to go next, didnt look like much fun to

me. Groomers are out doing what they can and with a little more time and snow

we can hopefully get things opened up. So in the mean time please stay off the

trials so we can get this work done. Thank you.

Hope this helps explain things, Todd

One of the southernly-most trails in the OFSC network is open. ;)

Yup and they looked really good when I drove by some of them on Tuesday. Guess its just dumb luck this year I guess.

our trail system has been groomed once, with the acception of the Arkona trail from the four corners and the small piece from the junction behind Forest (one goes to Camlachie and the other goes south) and it's the south portion that has not been groomed due to bare wheat fields. From what I was told today at 2:00pm, the groomer was going to go over the Arkona trail. So thats not bad for the Warwick club to have that all done following the big storm and the TM115 breakdown. The TM was down for 1 evening due to a broken steering ram mount. In the last 24hrs the groomer ran non stop to catch up. As Todd said, there isn't enough snow in the fields to even think about going limited, we need at least 4-6" of snow with no wind. We have started a good base and knocked 90% of the tops of the plowed fields. Give the club a chance to get things done, they have done well with the time they have.
