abitibi canyon - finding the fun stuff

Taking my first trip to Abitibi Canyon this weekend.

Are the fun hills and stuff right off the trails, and can be found easily. The extreme tours site shows some cool shots, is that all easily found?

Any tips, tricks or pointers for a first timer, besides the gas issue!

If you're coming from Cochrane, fill up & head west on the road towards the dam. Cross the dam & turn right. Follow the tracks & have fun.

Like he said. Just went there for the first time and it was a no brainer. Cross the dam and follow the tracks to the right and you are on it. Will probably be pretty beat down by now - gets a lot of traffic - but the trail up there is awesome and the hills are technical. And bring some ching for the gas man at extreme tours - $1.85 liter Canadian. You're going to have fun.

They only accept cash for gas at the base camp.

No credit or debit cards. If going up during the week, call ahead to ensure they'll be open.

They usually are but you don't want to take chances. Their number is listed on the map.

It's a 160 kilometers or 100miles from Cochrane to the base camp. (one way)

Make sure you have a full to the brim tank when you start and your sleds can go that far on one tank.

Ditto for oil.

Once you get there, top up and go play in the canyon.

Then try to get back to the base camp before dark and top up again to the brim for the ride back.

It's slightly shorter from Smooth Rock Falls.

Now go have fun. You won't regret it.

Yes it is.

The trail from SRF loops up to the base camp.

You'll need to buy gas there.

When leaving there, turn left to go to and over the dam.

Once you cross the dam, you'll see everyone's tracks turn right.

Follow them. Then a little further down the trail, again turn right following everyone's tracks.

They'll lead you into the canyon.

That first really big hill, is a really big hill. LOL

Don't let it fool you.

Some people run the roads to enter the canyon from the other end.

Not a bad option.

If you plan to run all the way through the canyon, give yourself the better part of the day to do so.

Again, it is not recommended to be playing in there in the dark. Especially this being your first time.

So get there early if that's your plan.

The trail back directly to Cochrane crosses the ice bridge.

That's pretty interesting too. (See pic)

Here's some pics you can use as land marks.

Have a great ride.

I recall 95 miles from Cochrane to base camp and 65 miles on west side back to SRF. That sound right???

Roughly Correct.

SO............ for those just doing the loop:

First head west to SRF and fill up your gas tank there. That way you're only running 100km to the base camp where a fill up is about $1.80 per litre in cash. Then come back down to Cochrane for your next fill.

SRF to the canyon is, as described in sled parlance, a "Quick Ride"
