signfan Posted March 24, 2025 Posted March 24, 2025 Has anyone had issues with their fuel caddies leaking? Mine has been, but I can't sort out the source of the leak. The throat area near where the nozzle connects seems to be wet after riding with the caddy full. Wouldn't really matter, but I find our luggage which is in the bag above it reaks of gas fumes to the point that you can't wear the clothes you packed after a day on the trail. I pulled it all apart tonight and am not seeing anything obvious. Wondering if anyone has been through this and knows of a fix. Quote

E in gas eats the seals over time. I would change it and try again. My shop I get gas fumes issue too and always seals are going bad, not doing thier job. That e hardens them right up I find. Quote

If Seals good on new lid, it must be threads on your can are stretched out and gas is spewing thru seal and stretched threads. If you take some teflon tape and tape it same way lid tightens down, that seal that up. You have to take tape with you and do it when tape wears down. Just a thin layer of tape will do. I smooth it around real well and it stay in place for a few uses. Quote

stoney Posted March 25, 2025 Posted March 25, 2025 Mine leaked a bit on me once, but that was human error....lol. It does suck, you buy these very expensive things to avoid the make shift gas carrying options that usually end in some leaked gas. Can you pressurize the container and then see if you can find the air leak perhaps. Quote
ski-dog Posted March 26, 2025 Posted March 26, 2025 Mine leaked the first time I used it. Although it was tight, removed cap and spout and reassembled and it has been fine since. 1 Quote
signfan Posted October 9, 2025 Author Posted October 9, 2025 Dug into this tonight. It’s leaking where the black plastic is bonded to the red on the throat. Any advice on a repair? Looking at this JB weld product https://www.amazon.ca/Weld-2110-Metal-Fuel-Repair/dp/B01IOPE65M/ref=asc_df_B01IOPE65M?mcid=0baf68841dac3b63a078c39e3ddba45d&tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=706723814391&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8989647724138881544&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9208384&hvtargid=pla-568351624702&psc=1&hvocijid=8989647724138881544-B01IOPE65M-&hvexpln=0&gad_source=1 Quote
RAMSOMAIR Posted October 9, 2025 Posted October 9, 2025 Worth a try. Way cheaper than a new tank that's for sure. Quote
signfan Posted October 9, 2025 Author Posted October 9, 2025 I’m guessing the black piece is factory glued in place. Would be nice to pull it and re-glue, but not sure I can do so without destroying it. Quote
Sksman Posted October 9, 2025 Posted October 9, 2025 I used a similar epoxy coating as below on a plastic dirtbike tank that leaked around mounting brackets. It was in the late 80’s and it worked great. Cleaned tank, Dumped the can in tank and swirled around and left to dry 1 Quote
signfan Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 That’s a great idea sealing it on the interior. Aesthetically it would be much better provided you trust the product isn’t going to peel and plug fuel filters in the future. Quote

It was much cheaper to pour in and try. It sealed well We made sure to coat the complete inside of tank, had some run out fuel spout hole, and out around top of filler neck. We thought maybe it would peel but I do not remember any issues with debris or plugging of fuel line. Quote

It will eat solvents too. Not sure what you could use on it that's e safe. Quote
Spiderman Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 I have used Gorilla tape for making under water repairs on my rink liner and its worked really well - applying on wet/dirty and held up. Might be worth a shot - applying on both sides if you can Quote
stoney Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 What happened to the days of some split gas or oil on our gear, smelling like a dirty garage and a 2-stroke that burned way more oil than they do today.....was that so bad.... Quote

Nope, and if we could get back to those days, we'd also be able to increase ridership and save our trails! Now, stay on topic! Let us know what you do and how it works. Quote

But ruin the planet....lol I think I would first see what warranty they have on these sorts of things, then likely try one easier fix, an epoxy of sorts that is designed for gas like JB, if it works, bonus, if not, move on and buy a new one. Yep that’s where I’m at. i have no issues with a little grease on the suit. This is a touch different. After a day of riding your luggage would catch fire from the fumes it’s absorbed over the day. Defeats the purpose of packing a bag as you can’t use your spare clothes. Quote

I get that - just being sarcastic. I think we have all rode with that one guy still sporting the leathers that were stained and stunk of gas and oil. saddle bag trips have a slightly different expectation now compared to 15+ years ago. signfan Posted November 30, 2025 Author Posted November 30, 2025 So quick update. Did some research. Gas cans are made from HDPE plastic. I e-mailed JB Weld to see if their tank weld epoxy would work. They were great and replied that none of their products would adhere to HDPE. Apparently HDPE is the most difficult plastic to get anything to bond to. They gave me the name of a specialty epoxy provider in Minnesota that had a product that would work with HDPE that is also fuel resistant. Unfortunately after shipping costs, buying an applicator gun and tariffs a small tube of Epoxy was gonna cost me $150. So canned that idea. Bit more internet research told me plastic welding was the solution. Trick is you have to use HDPE material for filler. Bought a $20 soldering iron from cdn tire and started scrounging through the recycling bucket. Turns out the recycling marks on plastic tells you what type it is. An old pill bottle had the #2 in the recycling symbol. Thats HDPE. Next concern. How to weld this without blowing myself up. Got the soap and water out and rinsed the can really really good. Several washes and full of water 100% a couple times. Then took it to the driveway outside, put the open flame of the bbq lighter at the spout to make sure there wasn’t a surprise coming. Nothing. Shoved the bbq lighter in the can still lit. Still nothing. Awesome. Gonna survive this test. Went back in and with the soldering iron notched out a v groove on the seam and then melted the HDPE scrap from the pill bottle into the slot. Sanded it down and did a water test. So far so good. Another major clean of the tank to get ride of any sanding shavings and then 1/2 hr with a blow dryer to get the interior dry. Will try filling it with gas tomorrow. Will probably add some gas line antifreeze and run the first 5 gallons through the truck where it will be diluted. Hopefully I won. Time will tell. Not the prettiest job, but if it works I’ll be a happy camper. 7 Quote

PISTON LAKE CRUISER Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 Wow, you were certainly a man on a mission! It's nice to get a win when you get into a project that deeply. Good on you for having the fortitude (big word meaning stubborness) to get it done. Quote
