So you have 4" of frost in the ground before it snows.

Then you git 4' of snow.

Before long, the frost starts to push up out of the ground as it is insulated from the cold.

The more snow that you git, the less that it matters if it was froze prior or not, and the more likely that it is to have thawed over time anyhow.

.

That's a great explanation. I left some dead chickens by the barn and they got burried under snow and they actually started to compost under snow too. It sure is a great insulator.

Great afternoon. Not alot of traffic either. The base held up well with the warm spell. Watched a guy roll it coming into a corner about 10-15kms east of the asc shelter on d101. I was well over on my side but he breaked on a nasty icy spot and it grabbed and rolled hard. Sled seemed fine and so did he but i hope all is well. Dinner at Boiler room in dwight then headed home. HGR groomer is out on the east side, hopefully going to Baysville.

I told my wife I was going for a quick ride this am and would be back home before 1.    I texted her at 1:30 after getting gas in Mildmay.   😂

Ended the day with 250kms by myself and had a great ride.    Very little traffic considering it was a Sunday.    Mildmay area got an accumulation of snow last night.    The long range weather is starting to look wet but I am pretty sure that we still have 1 weekend left in S Ont.

Rode from my driveway. In Mount Forest having lunch. Trails are in great shape. No complaints from the wife.

This is the roughest section we’ve been on. Passed 3 sleds all morning.

Looks fantastic - and good timing by the looks of things.

We are hoping to be able to put a few miles on next weekend

Rode from home at Heidelberg to Blyth and return via different route this morning. More great trail than bad. The bad is at our end. 228 km. and home before 1 for lunch.

Came back from Mount Forest through Teviotdale, Conestogo Lake, Elmira and home in Bloomingdale. Not nearly as nice as the morning trails. The trail past Pike Lake was beat washboard, lots of traffic. Harriston, Teviotdale was good until we hit Conestoga Lake. More washboard, dirt showing in the corners and lots of sleds running around. Trail got a bit better once south of the lake but once you hit Elmira, the bush trails are getting thin, tops of the fields are showing through. Road crossing are soft and frost was coming out of the gravel roads.

Im sure this was my last ride from home.
Pics are just a couple miles from home. I’m sure by Thursday this trail will ice with no snow on the sides. We need a base like this on the first week of January, not March.

At least we got some riding in. Concrete base like this in December would be great 👍. All in all was a good season considering most of snow came down on 12 and 16th of Feb.

Last ride in the South for the season for me and the first time trailering to ride since January when I brought the trailer and sleds up to the cottage.  Shelburne to Owen Sound and surrounding areas.  Lunch at the Kettles Back Home Cookin’ in Chatsworth was very good, first time there and will be definitely going back again next season.  It’s been a fantastic season so far, been out a ton, my son also, on his sled and some rides with me. Headed to Cochrane / Hearst on Sunday for a few days of riding to finish the season off.

How often do you use wheels?

With the trailer I have now, every time I load or unload.  During the season ideally as little as possible. I have used them a few times this season, all at gas stations.  Came in very handy yesterday having to navigate through a large parking lot with no snow to get gas.  Best feature is how well the sled steers on bare pavement.

Won't react when you hit the edge of ramp on trailer?

I have Caliber Edge Glides 2.0 on both transitions, trailer floor to door and door to ground that make for a smooth entry/exit from the trailer.  Not once has the wheel retracted going either direction with the trailer.  Weight of the sled and forward direction keep them in place during normal use. The only time I’ve had them retract is when going backwards over the small curb at the bottom of my driveway at home coming out of a friends trailer.  5th season for them, still all the original hardware.

Good info. I've often considered them myself but just never seem to get around to a serious look.

You won’t use them all the time but when you do they are  definitely nice to have.  Not having to drag a heavy 4stroke around to get gas or make a turn on pavement is nice.  While I type this I think about how convenient they will be in the parking garage at the Companion next week.  I have the Rouski’s (Kimpex), my friend with the SRX has the Qualipieces roller skis.  One downside to the ones I have is that you aren’t  able to use superclamps on the skis in the trailer, not an issue with the Qualipieces.  Also the Qualipieces are a much cleaner compact setup, engagement of the wheels is done by lifting from the ski loop and using your foot to engage the wheel.  The Rouskis you have to lift with one arm and engage the wheel with the other.  Rouski has a new Evo model but I have no info on those.  When the time comes for a new sled I’d be leaning towards the Qualipieces, seen them in action on the SRX a few times this year and like that setup.

Have had on both sleds for 10 years now..

Will not travel without them.

The slope they make for the doos at gas pumps gets the tank full as well..

Worth the cost in carbide life..

Sounds like a lot of clubs in Southern Ontario are calling it a season as of tomorrow.

I thought that we would still get this weekend out of "yellow" trails.

Noticed that too. Lots of Facebook announcements saying "That was a great year".

Let's have some hope that the TWN is wrong.

I know it won't be great but I'm hoping some areas escape the bulk of the rain and can reopen Yellow.

FWIW - Wawa is calling for 12-18 today and Wednesday.

And they are to be keeping their head below freezing as well.

Doesn't look as good for The Soo, but they are to be back in the freezer as well come Wed night.

Supposed to be +15-18 in mid Michigan next week. That will be heading East and wipe out most of central and southern Ontario trails, I would bet. She's warming up to sing, get your rides in while you can. Ski

It was a good year but no where near record year, we had around 11 years ago. I think we had 12 weeks of open trails that year. This year we hit our average of about 5 to 6 weeks depending which area.  It's way better then lousy few days we had last few years. It's enough to put some energy back into trail system and revive permit sales for 2026.  I know a few people sleds just sat in shed this winter, no insurance no permit.  I couldn't get them to drag them out. Next year they be back on board hopefully.

I take it that they will be singing a swan song?

Frig....... having a hard time making a decision here.

Kid and I both have hockey tonight - both have play off games:

We're both off rest of the weekend.

Trails appear to have held up - but can't tell if there is enough snow on top to keep cool or not.

Do I make the pilgrimage in the a.m. and go for it?

If not - looking like it will all be over by end of next week.

don't want to go up - and play the overheating game every 10 minutes either.

hmmmmm

Decisions decisions
