800 class 2 strokes from the last ten years

I've never owned an 800 because they were always the ones blowing up with low mileage through the 90's and 2000's. Are they still as bad? I cant say I've seen or noticed it as much in the last ten years and reading on the internet doesnt help.

Would you buy an 800 with 7or 8000kms? I dont ride near as much as I once did. I pretty much ride solo when I get a chance to get out and 2-4 hours average. I enjoyed the 4 strokes, but they just wear me out. Shoulders are held together with pins and screws and the old muscle trauma flaring up has pretty much ended going for long rides. I'd be happy with a 600, but I see a ton more 8's for sale.

Just looking for personal experience from folks that have put some miles on without engine failures. Thanks

I am a Polaris guy through and through but would not trust one past 6000 km's.  DOO on the other hand, for some reason, I wouldn't shy away from one with 10000 km's on it.  I've been looking myself for something this winter and high mile DOO's don't scare me but I steer away from anything over 6k from Polaris.

I was a Polaris guy up to about 2006. Loved my ol' triples and had a couple 700 liberty's too. Gas and go. I took a few years off and when I started riding again I tried everything out. My wife put a ton of miles on a 600 etec. It had 12000kms maybe 13 on it when we sold it.  Still going today. I just dont like the Doo's now. They just dont suit my riding.

It'll be a Cat or Polaris for me. Pretty sad when guys that put big miles on have to trade them in every year or two.

Always had Cat 800 sleds and I think they have the most reliable 800 then the other two manufactures when it comes to more miles.

They always tended to burn more oil as well, which in a 2-stroke, not sure that is a bad thing......but for saddle bag trips, it was not ideal.

Always had over 5,000 miles on them as well when I sold them and no issues.

Cat's with the 800 Suzuki motors were pretty darn bulletproof. The 2010-2017's (800ho motor) were the highest HP numbers. 08-09 (non HO) were still pretty darn good. I wouldnt buy a used sled with more than 1500 miles on it but, that is just me. I go by the notion of thinking of sleds like cars x10. IE: 10,000 miles= 100,000 miles. you know the more miles, the more stuff is going to nickel and dime you, or worse.  If what they are offering is the cleanest thing they own, Walk away!. :D Ski

I had a 2009 version of the Polaris 800 - which by all accounts were un-reliable and pieces of crap.

Put over 3000 miles on it w/o any issues.

My Cat 800 Suzuki has a little under 5000 miles on it ( I think lol ) - no problems to date

I try to avoid buying anything used if I can - because I don't trust people more than I would not trust a product - if that makes any sense :)

Perfect sense. Dont buy the sled under the tarp beside the chicken coup just because the seller says mint with low kms. lol

I'm a Polaris guy all the way. If you're looking at a Polaris stay away from anything before 2015. In 2015 they updated the 800 & they became much more reliable. I got in the habit of adding a couple of ounces of oil to each tank of gas for additional reliability. But with anything you're buying someone's used sled & they won't tell you how hard it was actually ridden. The biggest thing is if they sled appears to be maintained, suspension, bushing etc., in great working order may be your best indication of how that sled was treated.

I ended up picking up a 2019 XC800 129 with 2454km. Lady owned and ridden. I havent had time to get into it too deep, but all the obvious things seem ready to ride. We'll see once I get into it. I posted it in topic "that time again"
