f the permit sales increase is the same across the province, the need for an increase in permit prices may not be needed at this time. JMO

From what I can see the price of diesel fuel has increased by about 10 cents per litre since sled season. If the increase continues it will likely eat more $ than the increased sales revenue from last season provided.

Maybe one  of our farm operating members can add some actual info on the fuel increases. Also, would be nice to know how many litres per hour a groomer might use.

Clear Diesel was $1.05 in Dec 2020.

Now it’s $1.29 or so.

I filled my dyed diesel two weeks ago it was 93 cents plus HST . Groomer would probably use 25 to 30 litres per hour

the cost of everything is on the rise. Why would a permit not be effected by inflationary pressures? What needs to happen, is this. Set a price that sustains the system, then increase that price each year at the same rate as inflation. Publicise that this is the case and every permit buyer would know what the increase will be if it were indexed to inflation. If this is not done the trails are finished. This is because the current set up votes an increase in Sept, but not for the upcoming season, it has to be approved by the ministry, then takes effect the following year. We will see double didget inflation in the very near future as well as higher interest rates, and without the ability to react to rising expenses with increased permit pricing, the inflationary pressures will destroy the budget.

Real world lol, I run the groomer, it and it’s fuel supply is at my place.

2015 Prinoth with an 18 foot mogul master drag.

250L of diesel on board, in a main tank and a rear mount feeder tank.

it depends on snow conditions a bit, but it burns about 20L per hour.

On a good day, our trails, that fuel load can do 120 km of trail.

It is not always enough fuel for one of our runs.

We have some local sledders that go to a next door clubs fuel supply and supply me cans of diesel, at their home, to top up, so we can continue and do more trail…if they didn’t It might end poorly…groomer out of fuel.

Been close to sucking air, haven’t run out yet thanks to volunteers.

With a newer groomer they must be more efficient as well one would think.

Possibly but newer groomers I believe means Tier 4 emissions. My experience with diesel emissions is that more doesn't necessarily mean better fuel economy.

It's been 6 years since I have been checked for a pass or any other credentials in Ontario.

I see MANY more sleds every year without stickers.

If a fix is required, I firmly believe that's the answer.

Far from it.  2 trac shur tracs were running 10 - 15 liters per hour max.  The 4 track tractors and the 2 track oem units are all closer to 20 liters per hour plus you're putting def in them now.

I agree.  But honestly is the level of trails with the associated costs, sustainable at this current permit price?. And if people balk at a measly increase of $10, then maybe this is not the sport for you. I just do not get what the problem is with a little increase to help things improve for the better. Just my opinion...

If you want to help buy permits on december 2 and pay full price. After all we can’t take our wealth to the grave yard 👍

Quebec

Like the $650 on trail option.  That means we would get the money, not a fine that goes to the province.

  • $ 340 for an annual trail permit purchased on or before December 9, 2020
  • $ 420 for an annual trail permit purchased after December 9, 2020
  • $ 650 for an annual trail permit sold in trail*
  • $ 260 for an annual trail permit for antique snowmobiles (2001 and older)
  • $ 220 for a 7-day trail permit
  • $ 135 for a 3-day trail permit
  • $ 65 for a 1-day trail permit
  • $ 580 for an annual trail permit for a rental snowmobile
  • $ 30 for a replacement trail permit

Bottom line is Quebec has a good system and patrol to back that up. Your chances of riding in Quebec without a permit and not getting caught are slim to none. Here in ontario if we had on trail option that might be suicide with lack of enforcement. Some would just ride and probabily not get caught, whole winter.
I am not sure how much mto takes on each permit sold and where money would go. I think currently fine is 65 dollars for trespassing and can go up to 1000 dollars if you don’t comply but buying a trail permit too I believe.

  • 4 weeks later...

Should be interesting to hear the comments from some on this.....the sky just might be falling.....

I think $9.99 would have been a better number to start off with personally.....still gives you that mental block that some may have and be in the the single digits.

I have no idea on permits sold, but lets say it was 75,000 last year - that is $375k, that I am sure is welcomed by many!

Highly unlikely anyone that frequents here would have an issue with the increase.

Permit talk, cooler air outside, sleds showing up at dealers.....hopefully there will some more sled discussions around here in the coming weeks :right_on:
