News Release: Health Unit Opens Skating Rinks, Skating Trails, Tobogganing Hills, OFSC Snowmobile Trails and Snowmobile Trails on Crown Land.

Posted on Friday February 19, 2021

NORTH BAY, ON – The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Heath Unit) is lifting closures of outdoor skating rinks, skating trails, tobogganing hills, Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) snowmobile trails and snowmobile trails on Crown Land in the district effective Monday February 22, 2021. The outdoor amenities were closed in January 2021, after numerous complaints about individuals and groups not following public health measures.

Municipalities are asked to assess their plan and capacity to be able to safely open their outdoor recreational amenities in compliance with COVID-19 public health measures. Plans must ensure that individuals are following public health measures, such as physical distancing, following gathering limits and wearing a face covering, as required. If there is evidence that public health measures are not being followed, the Health Unit will re-evaluate the situation, potentially resulting in the closure of these outdoor amenities.

OFSC snowmobile trails and snowmobile trails on Crown Land are also permitted to reopen as of February 22, 2021. This decision was made through consultation with the OFSC, who have outlined a comprehensive COVID-19 Flex Trails plan. If there is evidence that public health measures are not being followed, the Health Unit will re-evaluate the situation, potentially reclosing these trails.

Outdoor physical activity, such as walking, running, playing outside and biking are important for physical and mental health and still recommended by the Health Unit. However, all activities outside the house need to be done with extreme caution, following the COVID-19 public health measures, and should be done close to home.

If you think you may have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has it, first self-isolate and then use Ontario's Self-Assessment Tool to see if you need to seek further care. If you need further assistance call your health care provider or the Health Unit at 1-800-563-2808. If you have severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, you should call 911 and mention your symptoms.

so here is my question, NB/PS is still under a stay at home order, does this mean the that we cannot go and ride on the trails during this time, I have a cottage in the Parry Sound district, but it is not my place of residence. So if I want to ride up to the cottage would I be breaking the laws? As for the other regions that are not in a stay at home order, do we think they will be connecting the trails that cross over the health districts. Just trying to plan what is left of the winter.

To be fair, I understand he later earned a degree in Public Health Admin or something like that.

One of the problems with removing him is there is a shortage of 'qualified' Public Health professionals.  Apparently, there are a number of Districts with 'Acting' Heads for that reason.  The other challenge is he is a card carrying Conservative and they will circle the wagons.  He ran (unsuccessfully) in about 2004-2008 to be Conservative Candidate (MPP I think).

Not defending him by any means, just offering info.

No offence to whits-end or anyone else here....but he certainly has more medical qualifications than anyone on this forum if you don't mind me saying so. Having a specialization takes more schooling as well. Where did everyone here showing charts and spouting quackery get their medical degrees?

BTW - the danger of the variants is that a person showing no symptoms goes longer before showing symptoms  than in previous iterations and is infectious to others for a longer period of time without knowing it. Fact. No charts.

There is literally no data to support thst theory.

If that was the case, why didn't the MOHs in the other health units w/ snowmobile trails, not close the trails in their regions? They've had cases as well.

I think it might have been because NBPSHU was swamped with sledders a few times as their trails opened ahead of most other places. I think there may have been complaints from certain vocal people in some of the small towns.

(Not saying that I supported the closure.)

I have a place on the Seguin and I’ll be riding next week.. I’ll let you know if I get into issues for being up there.

Go ride as I plan on doing.

Whoever does needs to be fired from whatever useless role they think they have.  There is no real science to support this.

Horse manure.

#1 post it if you can. #2. The variants haven't been around long to do conclusive studies yo make any conclusion. #3. Data from around the world including the UK (which is the main variant) is sharply down.

No science at all. How dare they destroy society for a virus that is no more dangerous than the flu. And that is a statistical fact. Especially Dr Tam and her projections today. Complete BS.

The idiots who claim to be following the science should put their education credentials through a paper shredder.  In the garbage where it belongs.

Trumpery! And we know how well he killed off Americans. The BS is highlighted above.

BTW, I agree that there is no data to support the NBPS OFSC trail closures.

I appreciate the hard work you put in.  Now why don't we destroy 200 000 small businesses and put your great grandkids into debt so you can live in your long term care home for another month circling the drain waiting for the next stiff breeze to push you in.

I am not too worried about that "stiff breeze" just yet. I have a couple of aunts that lived to over 100, uncles who have functioned quite well into there 90s, and parents who are 94 and 92. I can ride a 600 km day on my sled, a 1000 km day on my street bike, and keep lots of young guys behind me on either of my KTM dirt bikes. Hope you do as well in your seventies.

Busybodies much like the one woman on my sledding page on Facebook. Chirping about stuff she hasn't got a clue about & that goes for non-sledding stuff too in the village.

Just STFU you idgit w/ an inflated sense of self-importance...

I made the statement because I am not alone in having an active and involved life at 70. Through power sports, I know a lot of guys over 70 and even 80 who are still active in racing as well as recreational motorcycling and sledding. I am not saying that 70 is the new 50, but a 70 year old life shouldn't be treated as disposable, as has been implied more than once recently on this forum.

No jurisdiction in the world has dealt with this Covid pandemic perfectly, so perfection is not the standard that we should be expecting from our politicians and medical officers. The medical and statistical opinions expressed on this forum are thankfully mostly laughable. It reminds me of the "It will be gone by April", "It will die off once the warm weather gets here", "It will go away after election day" theories. I think we all need to chill and make the best of the next few weeks.

And BTW, maybe we owe a big thank you to the OFSC, districts and clubs who have been working their butts off to get the trails open in the NBPS health unit. Dialog, not ideology prevailed. Should never have been shut down, but once it was, yelling  "fire the bastard" wasn't what got the trails open for the locals.

Yes, I know they were discussions before the snow fell about things being put in place. Hopefully that helped allowing the trails to open (& stay open) in other districts.
