ecarnell
Think my son and I are going to head up to Cochrane after Christmas for a couple of nights. I honestly haven’t stayed up there in 15+ (Maybe 20) years ,when we use to stay at the North Adventure Inn. Looking for a quiet spot (son is 13) , clean with two beds, parking for truck/trailer, easy access to trails - and probably a walk out balcony for some bbq/food cooking if possible. not looking to spend a ton - as just us. any recent comments on west way, chimo, NA inn, etc appreciate . thanks let it snow!!!! Candubrain
We stayed at the Thriftlodge last January. It was clean, quiet and reasonably priced. Gas and Timmies are across the road and so is the trail access. Restaurant next door was good too, but don't remember the name Just noticed your from Ktown as well
Canuck
Recommended- Westway ( our regular stop) or Thriftlodge ( many on this forum like it, see above) . At Westway, they care - rooms are clean, halls are clean, upkeep is very good. Tim Hortons is close for breakfast, JRs ribs is walking distance ( or drive ). Your son will enjoy the ribs and fries. Lots of parking. Short road ride, usually snow covered, to the trail. Not recommended - NOI. We had a group ride out of North Adventure Inn. Accomodations were iffy ( not clean ). Too far from town IMO.
Nunz
Westway is our preferred place to stay in Cochrane, have stayed at the Thriftlodge a couple of years ago but found rooms very cold and showing their age. They do have a good restaurant though Terry's which is a short cab ride from the Westway. Jr's and what was the Ice hut are within walking distance or cab ride. We are booked in from January 1st for a few nights stay. Looks like there may be a few OCers kicking around.

I don't think you will find anything with a balcony and to be honest, I think you may have a hard time finding any available rooms betweem Christmas and New Years at this late date. If you would be interested in a cabin just north of Cochrane you might want to consider: http://www.floodslanding.com/ There is a trail right into the camp and its about 25 km. from Cochrane by trail. Thanks guys for the reply - “online” looks like rooms available for us no problem dec 29-jan1 at most places - But until you book you never know. I meant “walkout patio door” to lot/ground level for a portable bbq - not a a “balcony” per say - my mistake in my head! don’t know how far south trials will open at that time - so not sure if I want to risk anything farther south to stay. Based on 14 day forecast - cochrane conditions should only improve from here on in.

Westway is a very good clean place to stay with outside doors to flat sled parking area that you could likely BBQ on.. Its usually full of sledders but never been too noisy when we have been there. Close to anything you would need in town.
Turbo Doo
Nothing much to add here, other then we only stay at the Westway. Brian, Kathy and their Son are great people. Food, JR's, Terrys Steakhouse, or the new 49 Parallel Bar and grill, which took over from the Ice Hut. I agree with Canuck. Never ever will I stay at the NAI. I was there with him on that not so nice trip. Floods Landing is a nice spot also, on site food. Not sure about fuel. Canuck, do you remember the Dutchmans breakfast that lovely morning?... revrnd
NAI aka The No Adventure Inn. Never had a chance to stay there during its heyday. I haven't heard of anyone staying @ the Chimo in years. Our OC crew that has done the Great Big Loop the last 2 winters has either stayed or staged @ the Westway w/ no issues to speak of. As long as you don't count the 2-stroke sled riders with excessive "Flick Finger" continually coming and going until midnight. I do not understand why these guys just can't use a little throttle and go. Must have something to do with their boner from being there.

scottyr
It sure brings back fond memories when I think back to the late 90s and how the NAI was THE PLACE to stay in Cochrane. Good little bar/restaurant, heated sled storage and of course, the porn channel. I used to stay at The Chimo as a back up when the NAI was full. It had a rockin bar and a decent restaurant going on for a few years as well. I think the Chimo is mostly booked with construction crews these days. The Westway seems to be the safest place to stay these days. The rooms are clean and the owners are very friendly folks. Brian has gone to the beer store for us on a few occasions when we were running late. Great people. That said, we are always in the rooms right across from Timmies and usually early / mid week.
Strong Farmer
West way is good for snowmobiling. Great location, drive up rooms. Some rooms are dated and some are nicer, but they are all clean. When booking can ask for an updated one too. Never stayed at thrift lodge but it is a good option too. also Timmins bon aire is nice spot. Mikey’s restaurant next door, which is handy and lots of trailer parking too. Enjoy your ride

Blake G
Really can't go wrong at the Westway. Never had a reason to check out the other places.

Agreed with you and Blake's comments. No reason to stay any where else for us. When you are treated as good as you are from Brian and Kathy, for example, always having rooms available for us, trust in leaving Trucks/trailers there ($), going above and beyond getting stuff from beer store, coming with the truck and trailer on rescue missions, allowing really really late night, or should i say early morning arrivals, its tough to go somewhere else. And just plain old being great people and friends. Friday night Pizza night at the Westway in the 'off' season in the Westway pizza oven, is tough to beat also. revrnd
I know what you guys mean 100%. The 1 way I knew about the Bon Air (when my REV died) was when a friend nursed a sick Apex into Timmins in 2010. The Yammi dealer was across the road back then. He rode the sled to the dealer and then spent the night at the motel. He caught up to us in Hearst. An earlier trip the same guy's SRX burned up a drive axle bearing before we got to Earlton (staged in New Liskeard). That threw our plans/reservations out the window. Nothing available at the Queens or Companion upon our arrival in Hearst. Ended up staying at the Villa beside the Husky truck stop. Nothing fancy but clean & warm.
