I live on Belmont Lake . About 20 miles as the crow flies. I have cut several holes myself this week, anywhere from 4 to 9 inches and that is in a still part of the lake. If you are near any current at all you could be on 2 inches real fast.

Jack's Lake is not to be trifled w/. A family friend was w/ a chap that drowned in the narrows back in the early 70s. Peter was a teenager @ the time & was leery of riding on ice ever since.

I'll ride the lake but stick to the stake line. LOTS of islands and little bays.

Anstruther in the area has had @ least 3 drownings in the past.

Forgot about that. Also I think a SxS went thru the ice as well on the lake a few seasons ago.

Tragic indeed.

Way too soon to be out on the ice, especially in the south,.

Here is what the ice on Rice Lake looks like now

After you O2. :icon_tinykitball:

If we both run side by side it will be safer... if we run one behind the other the lead sled may weaken the ice. I bet you 1/2 dozen I can make it across.

Not to be confused with the Jack Lake north of Huntsville...

Showing open water--Yikes

Chandos is as well, and a person was on it and went through a week prior. Jack looks to have just iced in on the 25th with new ice in what was open the day before. No lakes in the south are safe, yet here we are. back in 88 I was involved in a rescue of a girl in haliburton, two others went in saving her, my wife, and her bf. Dec 30th. We all lived but it sure was a nightmare.

Other than the news saying the incident happening in Belmont Methuen, I haven't heard what part of the lake it was.
