saw that... it's making the rounds... guy's at his ice/water access only cottage and breaks his leg needing help. Then his rescuers get in trouble when they go through the ice.

The Key river can be tricky at the best of times.  I stake a small portion of it for  the C trail. The rescue sleigh in question does not float,I have towed it several times. The Britt area rescue is a volunteer organization and such is limited to the equipment they have. I believe in this situation it was OPP snowmobiles.I would have run a para medic down with a splint and a bag of percs and see ya in the morning. This was no emergency that was worth possibly 5 lives.Glad every body is ok.

It is not always easy to get a patient to a hospital

I am a paramedic and a volunteer fire fighter.  These are tricky situations and glad to hear everyone was

Would you run down a river unknown to yourself after midnight 2up on a sled towing a sleigh without a local escort ?

So what would it take to get fire department one that would float? I would be terrified to be strapped down to that thing knowing this.

Britt is in an unorganized township. So they probably don't get much support from them. They do community fund raisers and bill for hwy rescues and fire on Hwy 69.

These incident reports as written seem a little strange to me. Possibly (like many media reports) reality was different than what was reported. One of the reports above states they weren't riding on the "packed trail" when they went in the water. It does state that they were trying to ease the rough ride for the patient by staying off the packed trail. Am I wrong in thinking that the packed trail as rough as it probably was would also be the safest route. I guess it's a judgement call that had to be made in adverse conditions but I think I would have stuck to the packed trail even if the trip had to take longer. All that being said, I'm sure glad I wasn't one of those 4 first responder's and I believe they deserve our thanks for putting their own lives on the line.

Based on our training runs with our local fire departments you need to drive fairly slow with a victim in the toboggan or you bounce the hell out of them and take the chance of further damage.

I hope the training doesn't include going off the packed trail on a sketchy river. Especially if you don't know where you are going.I'm not going to slow  down that on that river. The beaten path was rough  from refroze slush .but safe.

They didn't need to put there lives on the line. That's the whole point. Why didn't some of the people with the patient  escort the first responders up the river.  The ones that know where they going. To send him to the hospital on his own? Maybe some interaction with the authorities was inappropriate after midnight.I wasn't there that's all I got to say.

Parts of the Key River are a bit sketchy and there are some sections that are bypassed over land and are very rough going  even when we have a lot of snow. What I am wondering is the first responders travelled 15 km down the river that would put them some where near the mouth of the river where the Helipad is for the Air Ambulance , are they only flying in the daytime or is a broken leg not serious enough?

As far as im concerned im going to be that one a$$hole here and state the hard facts that many will see as harsh but sorry I call it the way it is.

This whole scenario was doomed before it even started. First was the STUPID decision to go out on the ice just after a significant thaw and over a river that has a decent current! Second after venturing out with sleds they make another STUPID decision to venture off the hard packed trail to make it easier on the patient which then definitely put ALL their lives at risk. Its definitely better for the patient to put up with a bit of discomfort than to make a decision like that that put everyone at an increased risk more than they already were.

The one firefighter I do know and can attest she is not the sharpest tool in the shed! As well the supper troopers who do think they know everything and decided NOT to call a fully assembled and certified Ice Water Rescue Team AND AIRBOAT from Seguin FD A mere half hourish down the highway, decided to take everyones lives at risk when there was definitely a way better and safer alternative that was most certainly available to them!

Sorry but it friggin irritates me the friggin ego on some of those super troopers to put everyones lives at risk rather than call out a specialized team and equipment to deal with the situation properly and with way less risk that is available to the whole Parry Sound DISTRICT and beyond.

Let the hatred comments towards me fly for speaking the truth..

Meh it is what it is and needed to be said IMO. Everyone for the most part i hear commending them blah blah. And in some ways I guess so since they got themselves out of the mess they were in and no one died from this stupidity.

Thanks bud, although yes in some instances some leg breaks can be serious and depending on which leg or femur is broke, could have nicked an artery and bled out so even then 911 should be called to an extent. Its not that that im upset with that but rather the two agencies involved that thought they knew everything and especially the super troopers taking everyones lives into their own hands by NOT calling on the proper resources that were and are available to them. This could have been a SIMPLE patient extraction from his cabin in a safer controlled environment with the available resources to them.
