Ride Report - Elliot Lake > Halfway Haven > D'Ville > Repeat

Canuck

Recommended Posts

Yukon, TVBrian, riding buddies and I (6 in total) rode to D'Ville to see Luc and family. Enroute, stopped at Halfway Haven and slept there twice.

Wednesday was a crazy day. Wake-up in Coldwater (in laws) at 5 am > Pickup friends and pre-loaded sleds in Port Severn>Drive to Dunlop Lake Lodge Elliot Lake. Arrive by noon, unload and sled 250 kms to Halfway Haven. All in a day's .... .work.

Get on Hwy 400 at 530 am, right behind 2 salt trucks. 30-40 km per hr. Grrrr. Port%20Severn.jpg

We've enjoyed Dunlop Lake lodge in the past, and this trip was no exception. New owners, bringing energy and passion to the lodge. Highly recommend it.

Lauch, ride a bit and mandatory first equipment check. Pulled over at the first bridge north.

Trails north were magnificent

Arrived at Black Creek Outfitters, only to learn that they were cleaned out of gas by 40 sledders the day before. Up the trail (or road) to Aubrey Falls - to see a sign "Closed - Mon - Tues -Wed.". Fortunately, one of the owners saw us standing there and opened for us.

Fueled up, and went looking for the shortcut she told us about. Ahead, over bridge, Ranger Lake Road to Domtar Road. Well, 2 out of 3 gets you a 'C' grade. Found the bridge and Ranger Lake Road, but took F Trail up and over the mountain. One hour later, came down the mountain and saw where road shortcut merged with F trail. C'est la vie. Onward.

Arrived at Halfway in the dark and Sean made incredible steaks. The night is best summarized by a sign viewed  later in the trip

Woke up feeling great!

We met Luc in Wawa (it was a surprise organized by Yukon and Luc's wife).

Boy, can Luc ride.

He led us from Wawa to D'ville , showing ice formations, reservoir levels (it had dropped 6 feet).

Some of the guys stayed at the local D'ville hotel - Relais Magpie. Wonderful new owners who've made a huge investment in the community. Heated garage is shown below ($10 per sled)

Day loops on the 3rd day (Friday) and then southbound on Saturday.

The hill down to Jones Powersports in Wawa is melancholy. Great view, but you're heading home.

Some great memories, tempered by the loss of 2 snowmobilers south of Halfway Haven, where we stayed Saturday night. That's told in other parts of this forum.

The northern trails will be open for some time. Elliot Lake north is highly recommended.

How were the sleds on fuel from Aubrey Falls to Halfway?  Particularly the Apex and Viper.  Anybody run out or need to bring extra fuel?

Doing the same trip from Elliot Lake to Wawa in a couple weeks!!!  So pumped!!!

Family day long weekend a buddy and I rode from sudbury to wawa and back. Had no issues with my viper and fuel from Aubrey falls to halfway haven. When you fill up in Aubrey be sure to burp the viper so you can squeeze in a few more litres. And be prepared for the gas prices at halfway, $2.25 per litre. Almost seen a few guys fall over when they heard how much they owed for gas haha. Have a good ride! It was awesome that's for sure.

Apex ran out of fuel the long way north from Aubrey Falls (F trail). When we took the shortcut back no problem. Viper has 1/4 tank left both ways.

Happy trails.

Great pics but I question your (3 picture) stop in a blind corner when you guys are off your sleds milling about. Please try to stop on a stretch that is clear in both directions.

Guess you had to be there!

Next time we will tell Canuck to shoot the pics with more depth....

Indeed. There was a bridge behind us - sleds crawled over. Lots of space ahead of us. But recommendation is noted. Thx
