Chapitre Cinq/Jour Cinq/le Cinquième episode

Well, where were we?  And, why haven’t we left there yet ??

“Ile de France”     -     Paris makes me sick.

Aujourd'hui, we take our Depart from Au Delice and take a somewhat clockwise loop through spectacular country.  Première, we were obliged to cross, again, Mont Louis; such a magnificent crossing causing omg moments from spectacular scenery to steepness of grade both ascending and descending.  We carried along TQ5 in an easterly direction to the intersection of 597 and headed south for about 30 km to Murdochville once again and a gas stop.  Leaving Murdochville we backtracked a few kilometers to a Regional Trail taking us through the Réserve Faunique des Chic-Chocs and La ZEC de la rivière Petite-Cascapédia – a marvellous run of about 100km.  That Regional Trail connected us to trail 595 which we took westward a short distance to Relais La Cache, our gas stop and our lunch stop.  Not to be confused as gas related to lunch.

Relais La Cache looks a bit sketchy from the outside (ok, even on the inside) but it is a great stop for food.  Hotter than all get out inside which is a danger when returning to sub zero temps so strip down (ok, not That much !) so you won’t be overheated for your afternoon ride.   After lunch we continued westward on Trail 595 until we arrived at what had been described to us as on off trail that is off trail.  This hors piste, as it were, would supposedly take us on a diagonal short cut.  After devoting at least an hour to debating and then attempting the trail, we turned around in the bush (somewhere) and continued on 595 to TQ5 again.  TQ5 was another ‘maintained like a highway’ section to a regional trail we followed to Saint-Octave-de-l’Avenir and our hotel for the night.  The Village Grande Nature Chic-Chocs is a splendid place to overnight.  Typical Inn-type quaint rooms and a marvellous dining experience.  The view is magnificent and the attention by staff is superior.

After a magnificent day on mountain trails (and a little side trip trail into a maple syrup forest that went nowhere) over ‘about’ 300 km or so it only made sense to have a relaxed Attitude Adjustment Hour in SledJunk’s monster suite before repairing to a feast which we deserved.    J

Thanks! Am heading through Quebec on my way east this summer - have taken note of the various accomodations that might make a good side trip. Just received an email that the trails in Pittsburgh, New Hampshire closed yesterday - April 22, (some portions closed earlier) so thinking the areas on which you travelled must have had a long season as well?

Yes, long season. In fact, I saw on Mr. Interweb a Snowfall Warning in effect for the Gaspésie this morning.

Wow, those are some great photos and the scenery is amazing. I would love to ride this area some day. The elevation changes would be awesome.
