2014 Trail Update

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

The Club has had a really rough start to the season this year, but with dedication and persistence from the club volunteers, the trails are seeing progress.

Yesterday, Groomer "G" went out on the A107C west of Gowganda towards the C trail.  Groomer "M" went out on the "A" trail south to Elk Lake and is on its way back as we speak.  It went well for a change.  Volunteers will be signing the trails today and tomorrow.

More updates will be posted soon.

Thank you to all those who support our efforts.  It is because of positive feedback and understanding that we continue volunteering our time for this wonderful sport.

Thanks to all of the clubs who make this possible.  A special thanks to the small clubs that somehow keep this all together.  I will be up your way this weekend leaving in about 30 minutes to start the 5 hour drive.  It's been at least 5 years since we have been able to start a trip the 3rd weekend in January.  Hope it keeps up right through April.

Thanks again,

Updates for our trails have been posted on the OFSC interactive map.

When we posted this, we were all hopeful that the headaches were behind us.

Groomer "G" went out on Sunday but did not make it back. The axle seal failed and leaked all hydraulic oil.

Parts were ordered on Monday and were picked up yesterday.

Today, at -35 degrees Celsius, Ron from Gowganda Lake Camp, Bruce from Golden Eagle Camp and Urs from Auld Reekie Lodge have teamed up to head out into the bush to repair the groomer. Now that is Dedicated Volunteers!

Let's hope that all goes well for them! Thank you!

When we posted last, we had high hopes that all was going to work out. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Groomer "G": the guys noticed the wrong part was given once they got to the groomer and also realized that the bearing was gone not just the seal. It had to be floated to be repaired. It was said that it will be repaired by Wednesday. We are not holding our breath because we live in a world of broken promises in Northern Ontario.

We won't bore you with all the troublesome details that the guys endured in between trying to fix the groomer and it being floated.

Groomer "M": the day that Bruce was supposed to help Urs and Ron, the Matachewan groomer stalled on the trail with fuel issues. They managed to limp it back to base where several days of troubleshooting and repairs were made. As of this morning, all issues seem to be resolved but grooming tomorrow will be the real test.

Maybe we shouldn't cross our fingers....

We thank you for your patience and understanding!

Just want to give a Big Thank you to our volunteers:

Urs Brunner - for opening and signing the trails, fixing the groomers in all temperatures and hours of the day and night and for stepping into groom when needed to finish grooming the trails and keeping the lines of communication open with volunteers and with loggers.

Bruce Wilkins - for opening and signing the trails, fixing the groomers in all temperatures and hours of the day and night and for stepping into the groomer when needed to finish grooming the trails.

Ron Quick - for helping to open the trails, signing, for lending a hand to help with the groomer when it is down or stuck and for taking the time to pack the narrow areas of our trails with his sled and drag.

If it weren't for this team mentioned above, our area would not have any trails. Thank you again!

What about the guy out around long point that brings his own bombi and drives the 5 hrs to pack trails and cut brush , i think his early season packing must be helpful too, and he is not a local business owner either , doing it just because he is a sled head , and fixing the groomers in that cold must be nasty ,maybe tata should get you guys a little warm space to do maintenance , thanks for all you die hard volunteers up there or there would be no trails

The trails have recently been groomed and are holding up nicely.

From what we know, all businesses in the G.E.M. area are still open and welcoming sledders.

Enjoy the trails and ride safe.

Don't forget to like our Facebook page for grooming updates.

2014 turned out to be a great season! We had a rough start with getting the trails open and with breakdowns, however the volunteers kept their chin up and worked together to get the job done and the trails open.

Once the trails were open, we ran into a few more glitches, but looking at the big picture, it was all good and positive feedback from sledders kept the spirits high. Thank you!

The Club would like to thank ALL PERMIT holders for their support and also thank ALL VOLUNTEERS for their time and effort this past season! It was greatly appreciated!

Until next season!
