Does anyone have an approximate milage for this loop from Cochrane to Smooth Rock Falls? Are there any reports from anyone who has done this loop lately? Planning a trip and looking for info. Thanks.

District 15 map(mileage chart) lists the following mileages:

Cochrane to Abitibi Canyon-91 miles

Abitibi Canyon to Smooth Rock Falls-134 miles

Smooth Rock to Cochrane-43 miles

Total-268 miles

***Note- there does look like an error on the whole Abitibi Canyon line of chart though.

Mileages on map show:

Cochrane to Abitibi Canyon-92 miles

Abitibi Canyon to Smooth Rock Falls-55 miles

Smooth Rock to Cochrane-46 miles

Total-193 miles

For those of you that have my mileage chart there's been a correction:

Cochrane (Brunet's gas) to Fraserdale is 90 miles/145 klicks

Smooth Rock Falls (Esso) to Fraserdale is 51 miles/82 klicks

Smooth Rock Falls to A/A103 Jct. is 35 miles/56 klicks

Cochrane to A/A103 Jct. is 7 miles/11 klicks

A/A103 Jct to Fraserdale is 83 miles/134 klicks

(Using my GPS tracks & Fraz's)

just got back from that run.It was damn cold!! A beautifull loop. -38 on wed morning.Total mileage was 190 miles. We left from Thrift Lodge in Cochrane and went to Smoothrock Falls to Smoothies resturant where we filled up with gas and went in and warmed up.That was 48 miles. Then from smoothies to base camp 51 miles. The new trail from smoothrock up following the hydro line is fast and saw no sleds.Played in the canyon a little, then filled up with regular gas at 2.20 a litre, had some lunch then back down the other side to cochrane to Thrift Lodge again and that was 90.8 miles

We had a great week.saw very few sleds.A little chilly at times but still a great trip!

  • 3 weeks later...

I would do the loop in reverse. This loop is best if you go from Cochrane to smooth rock falls fill up with fuel. That way when you arrive at the canyonn and fraserdale 50 miles later you will only need half a tank of fuel at $2.20 a litre, instead of a full one. Half fun If money is no concern then do the loop the other way :-).
