Yes, if you have a good trade and a good dealer who can give you fair dollar because they are able to move it - it usually makes sense for me to trade.

I have never lost anything by trading - but have also done okay by selling private.

I take it one unit at a time and see where things are at and how my own time is looking, do the math, and make the decision.

100% - case in point, when I sold by last sled, dealer offered half of what I sold private for, he even suggested that route....sold in one day if I recall, but that was also with the silly covid clause in play.

Seasons change, it all plays a role for sure.

I usually trade to save the hassle too

always been treated fairly at dealer with values

It really is a win win, if it’s a fair offer…..with less hassles and headaches, if that is worth it to you to have less hassles in life….
you save the decreased amount offered in taxes you save on new vehicle that you wouldn’t see on private sale.
dealer makes that money as profit when they sell based on market value that keeps the wheel greased.
    rinse and repeat….

3k on taxes and not had to deal with kijiji or Facebook marketplace BS - priceless

Another reason to get things gone - dealing with the stupidity of selling anything on the various online platforms.

One of the other good things forums can be great for, the buy and sell section.

  4. People get caught up in the what it is worth to me vs. what it is worth to others/market can bear......the latter of the two will usually see success, the first, not so much......

I was just talking to a friend who is selling a used vehicle, they are stuck on 27K mark for it, dealer offered 23K when they bought their new one......stupid thing is they would have saved almost 3K in taxes on the trade in......lol.

Skied there on Friday with the family, conditions were great, good temps and fresh snow all day.  We didn’t see any brown patches, bonus day out for us, nice to have one more “winter” day.  My little guy took to skiing well this season, no issues making it down the bunny hill without falling.  He’ll be 3 in June.  My wife’s in for some competition next season.

    Very nice.

Reminds me of taking my kids when they were three, surprising how well they do at that age.

Under three is pretty impressive though!

I could not last on the bunny hills all day, so I asked the staff if I could take them up the lifts to bigger hills, susprised that I could, so off we went and did not have return to bunny hill until they were 6 and had to earn their stripe to move on.

  6. Tire rotation is key to any tire, especially a tire that has an aggressive or semi-aggressive tread pattern.
On my second set of Duratrac tires, first set had 100k.

I’ve had good luck with them so far.

I've had a Royal Distributing one for years now. No problems lifting any of the sleds I've owned. Renegade 1200, Yamaha Vector, Cat Turbo, Mach Z900 R. My '79 SRX has been sitting on it during the summer for 2 years just to make more storage space in my shed.

I have an adapter on it so I can use a 1/4" Impact to raise and lower.

Same here, never been an issue with mine - metal solid wheels/casters, all works, etc.....

  8. Studs is what is needed.
just drive in QC in a bad weather day and see those crazy buggers fly by you or pass on roads that are ice…lol

Then pass the ones flipped over or in the ditch a few km up the road that assume don’t have studs.

    Over 5 - less than 6.

    Can't recall exact #

Lots of life left in the 800 then.
perhaps your sons next ride and you get back on a POO, when we get winters again and time permits.

I used to replace every year or two - back then it wasn't much to do that and the cost was fair for the use/enjoyment I was getting.

My sled now is a dinosaur - but I paid 9k for it - with less than 300 miles and 3 years of full warranty.

I've gotten more than my money's worth on it - but now the replacement dollars are extreme and until the time comes when I can actually ride - it'll be in the garage

What sort of miles do you have on that retro?

I do it the other way. I let eveyrone else eat the depreciation. I keep money ready and scour kijiji daily.

I lost money on one sled and made on all the others. Im ahead a lot right now on all my purchases

Only one i didnt care what i was doing was with my Mach. I wanted that sled regardless of dollars.

Kudos to you, that’s great to be able to say that, I personally won’t spend much time or effort searching for deals, I’ll look of course when I’m ready to buy, then make a decision and pull trigger….i don’t think I have the patience to look and hold out for something I’m ready to buy.

  12. It is early March and blasts of winter may still come in the north, but how much water will be flowing.....

Close to preserve in hopes things can be salvaged.

This was from the Polar Bears Club:

We are going to be closing all of our trails today at 5pm due to the current warm weather with rain predicted overnight. Please note, we are not throwing in the cards for the season. We are ready to do what we can to reopen our trail network whenever/if winter decides to return! - Jesse

yes, but there is very little coming in behind those people - and even people with financial freedom - they didn't get there making stupid decisions with their money, and 30k on a sled in Ontario would fall into that category all day long - rich or not - it's just stupid lol.

People will start finding other things to do with their time and money if things don't get better

Yep, and for that other reason, the sport is slowly dieing from a rider to a volunteer standpoint.

Agreed, stupid money spent, that makes non-current left over that much more appealing vs. latest MY sled if you are so inclined to buy....but you are still taking a hit on selling your old sled for the "new one", if you sell that is.

There will always be a cost for having fun, each person has a different threshold for that given their life situation, stupid part of spending the money is not being able to enjoy it......I think most in the sport today will be okay spending the $$, if it can be enjoyed - that was a big hurtle this year no doubt, which as you say, leads to considering other options instead to spend your money on.

2025 season will be better for riding option, it has to be!

Maybe not for sled manufactures/dealers though.....

I rode my sons 550 Sport a little the day we got out.

It is light, has decent jam, and if you are a good rider, riding Muskoka trails, ( not Quebec and up north), it will keep up with anyone.

what I loved about it most was no temp gauge and scratchers non sense. Gas, oil, and go.

You can still have a lot of fun w/o spending 25k plus on a stupid snowmobile.

i have never not had a sled, 25+ is the end for me.

Yup, once sleds crept past the 20k mark - you lost a lot of people.

The crunch for spare cash for a lot of people now is real - new payroll taxes, carbon taxes, inflation etc. - is eating into discretionary income.

At 20k plus for a sled - that unless you trailered far this season- was essentially un-useable - you're into a small demographic of diehards.

$ and weather will be the death of sledding as you knew it

The system alone can't sustain itself on those diehards

It seems like a record that has been played the last little while over and over, but with this year under our belt, that affected ON and even QC a fair amount, might be a major change in the tides for sure.

The sport I beleive is still mostly made up of folks between 45 and 65, and for most in that bracket, financial freedoms are looking pretty good......but how dedicated will this group continue to be with winters likes this.

My buddy is looking at a sxs ,I always thought they way over priced. But at 23 plus tax and can use almost all year, compaired to sled at 25 grand for a couple of weekends ??

Funny how perspective does weird things....

Similar thoughts here, but now, not so much.

  16. Ya, sledding crowd is older around here, and really overall in general.

What ya ride I don’t think is a factor most think of when riding, other than perhaps a sled not looked after causing potential break down, but even new sleds leave you stranded.
Same as pace, a slower reasonable rider is not that far behind when you stop at intersections to wait for all to catch up, plus is it really about the race to get to your destination or about the ride it takes to get there, at whatever pace and enjoying that.
It seems things change more so due to weather, conditions or peoples life that changes, that cause a change in plans.
Personality conflicts might be a bigger factor for some.

  17. dito - I would run it on a stand until it reaches normal operating temp, spin the track up as well.

Replace the gas with fresh while you are at it, needs to be done anyways and avoids running bad gas through it.

I normally start my sleds every so often anyways and let them run for a bit on a stand, even in a normal year......2 or 4 stroke.

Only thing which kinda irks me Is I lost a year of warranty. Other than that I hope im on the positive side of ground level in 2004/5 winter and can enjoy the sport next year

There are rumblings of poeple lobbying BRP to extend this based on the lack of riding this year - can't see it going anywhere.

Flip side, what about those that put on stupid or similar miles per year with the same warranty extension for them.
